Series Even at 2-2 as Preds Fall to Stars in Game 4

The Dallas Stars scored four goals in the first period on their way to defeating the Nashville Predators by a 5-1 final in Game 4 on Wednesday night. The result sees the Round One series now tied 2-2 with Game 5 set for Saturday in Nashville, and Game 6 now becoming a necessity in the best-of-seven set.

Three of Dallas’s four goals in the opening frame came on the power play, and although the Preds settled things down in the final 40 minutes with Roman Josi getting the Preds on the board in the third, the early returns were simply too much to overcome.

“We’re definitely angry about this one,” Josi said. “Everybody’s angry. I think it’s normal after a game like that, but that’s playoffs. At the end of the day you have to look at it, but you have to put it in the trash tomorrow and then look forward. It’s one game, but we’re definitely angry about it.”

“It’s tough to see the scoreboard go that way,” Preds center Nick Bonino said. “We came out and had four good shifts. Each line had a good shift 5-on-5, and obviously we got into penalty trouble and our kill has been so solid for a couple months now. You never want to see three go in like that.”

Roope Hintz, Alexander Radulov, Andrew Cogliano and Mats Zuccarello all tallied for the Stars in the opening 20 minutes of Game 4, and Hintz added another in the middle period.

Predators goaltender Juuse Saros relieved Pekka Rinne after Dallas’s fourth goal; Saros stopped 16 shots in relief, as Nashville eventually ended up outshooting the Stars by a 35-29 margin on the night.

Josi’s goal came at 8:11 of the third period to spoil the shutout for Ben Bishop, but that was all the visitors were able to get.

“They were definitely the better team tonight,” Josi said. “They played better than us, they deserved to win the game and there are things we can do better.”

The Predators will now have two days to review, regroup and get set for Game 5 on Saturday afternoon (at 2 p.m. CT) in Nashville.

“I’m going to give the cliche hockey answer, but we came here, we won an away game and we have home ice back for a best-of-three, so that’s our focus,” Bonino said. “We did what we wanted to do coming to Dallas. We would’ve loved to go up 3-1, but it did not happen. Everyone on this team has been in a 2-2 series before, so we’ll go home and try to get Game 5.”

“It’s a best-of-three, and we have home-ice advantage,” Preds center Ryan Johansen said. “We’ll get back home, we’ll get some rest here the next couple days and go out and do what we do.”

Notes:

Nashville kept the same lineup in Game 4 that was seen in Game 3, including Miikka Salomaki seeing his second consecutive game action after previously being out since Jan. 4.

Brian Boyle (appendix), Wayne Simmonds (lower-body), Yannick Weber, Rem Pitlick, Zac Rinaldo, Matt Irwin, Cody McLeod, Frederick Gaudreau and Niclas Westerholm were scratched for Nashville in Game 4.

With the series a best-of-three competition, Game 5 is set for Saturday afternoon in Nashville, a 2 p.m. CT start from Bridgestone Arena. Game 6 is now necessary and will take place in Dallas on Monday night, time to be determined.

Coffee County CHS Baseball Holds Off Franklin County

Hayden Skipper of CHS baseball

The Coffee County CHS baseball welcomed district Franklin County to Powers Field on Tuesday.  Coming off a split with Tullahoma, and a 3 and 1 record in this past weekend’s tournament, the Red Raiders were looking to keep the momentum alive in their final district series of the season.  The Red Raiders held off a 7th inning rally to capture a 4 to 3 win.

The Red Raiders scored single runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings before adding a 2 spot in the 4th to seize a 4 to 0 lead.  Coffee County made the most of their 7 hits in that 3 inning span and got a dominant pitching performance from Hayden Skipper.  Skipper allowed only 2 hits while striking out 9 in his 6 innings of work for the win.  The Coffee County bullpen surrendered 3 runs prior to Griffin Meeker coming to the mound to get the final 3 outs and the save.

CCMS Baseball “Walks” Past Tullahoma

Hayden Garr of CCMS baseball

After clinching the regular season conference crown on Monday, the Coffee County Middle School baseball team was looking to end the regular season with a perfect conference record.  After battling their way to a hard fought win on Monday in Tullahoma, the Red Raiders hosted the Wildcats on a beautiful afternoon at CCMS.  Coffee County blew open a close contest in the 4th inning as they rolled to a 13 to 4 win.

Leading 4 to 3 in the bottom of the 4th inning, Coffee Middle used 2 walks and a pair of doubles to plate 4 runs in the frame.  The Red Raiders got the benefit of 11 walks and 3 hit batters to go with their 6 hits.  Pitcher Jacob Holder of Coffee County pitched 4 innings allowing 3 hits while striking out 8 to get the win.  Jack Anderson came on to pitch the final 3 innings to notch the save.

Holder and Hayden Garr had all 6 hits for the Red Raiders as each finished with a double and 2 singles apiece.  Gar finished with 4 RBI while Holder drove in 2 and score 3 runs.  England Bryan had 3 walks and 2 RBI.

Coffee County CHS Soccer Falls to Columbia

Briggs Haithcock of CHS soccer

The Coffee County CHS soccer team welcomed district leading Columbia to the Raider Soccer Field on Tuesday.  The Red Raiders gave the visiting Lions all they could handle as they entered the final 10 minutes level at 2.  Columbia added a pair of late goals to escape with a 4 to 2.

Columbia got on the board first in the 32nd minute as they scored on a penalty kick.  Briggs Haithcock leveled the match in the 37th minute as the two teams went to the half knotted at 1.  Columbia went back on top 3 minutes into the 2nd half but the Raiders answered again off a goal from Felix Salinas.  Haithcock was credited with the assist in the 47th minute.  After a long delay due to an injured Columbia player, the Lions added goals in the 73rd and 79th minute to crush the Raiders upset hopes.

The Red Raiders return to the pitch on Thursday when they travel to Winchester to take on Franklin County.   That match will kick off at 7 PM.

Doug Greene Named Coffee County CHS Football Coach on Monday

New Coffee County football coach Doug Greene talks to members of the Red Raider football team on Monday at CHS[Photo by Rebecca Koger]

Former Coffee County Central High School head baseball and assistant football coach Doug Greene has been hired as the new Coffee County Red Raider football coach.  In an introductory meeting with the team on Monday, the hiring was made official.  Greene was tabbed to succeed Ryan Sulkowski who resigned last month to take a job in North Carolina.

Greene returns to Coffee County after coaching at CHS from 1993 to 1999.  Greene comes to the Raiders from the staff of Ooltewah High School where he has served as defensive coordinator from 2013 to 2017 and served as offensive coordinator this past fall.  Greene served as head football coach at Rhea County in 2011 and 2012 as well as coaching college football at Carson Newman and West Alabama.    Greene has served on the staffs of renowned coaches Gary Rankin, Benny Monroe, Ron Crawford and Ken Sparks.

Coffee County CHS athletic director Rebecca Koger had this to say: “We are excited for Coach Greene’s return to CHS.  He brings experience and an attention to detail to our program. In his previous stint at CHS, Coach Greene was instrumental in building our baseball program and we feel he can use that experience with football. We feel he is a good fit for our community and we look forward to Friday nights at Carden-Jarrell under Coach Greene’s leadership.”

Coffee County Central High School principal Paul Parsley echoed those sentiments.  “We are pleased to welcome Coach Doug Greene back to the Coffee County community.  Over Coach Greene’s coaching career, he has had success in developing student athletes at virtually every position group.  He has experience as head coach, offensive coordinator, defensive coordinator, and special teams’ coordinator as well.  Coach Greene has a reputation for attention to the fine details of teaching the game, a quality that will serve us well. We can’t wait for him to get started.”

When reached by Thunder Radio on Monday morning, Greene had this to say: “I am excited about coming back.  The people of Manchester gave me a chance back in 1993 as a 22 year old kid.  I have a lot of great memories from my time in Manchester and I would like to build more.”

Greene will begin interviewing returning coaches and getting to know his team in the days leading up to the opening of spring practice.  When asked if he had done any scouting of the current team and staff, Greene said that he wanted to wait and interview each person individually “to eliminate any bias and let everyone start with a clean slate.”

A date for spring practice has not been set but Greene intends to conclude spring workouts with a “Red & Black Game.”  A community Meet and Greet is in the works and Greene has also agreed to be a guest on Saturday’s Coffee Coaches Show.  The Coffee Coaches Show is heard each and every Saturday morning at 10 AM live from the showroom of Al White Ford/Lincoln.  The Coffee Coaches Show is heard exclusively here on Thunder Radio.
