HS BASEBALL: Raiders, Rebels Tuesday game PPD to Wednesday because of weather

The Central High School Red Raider baseball team’s series with Franklin County was supposed to come to Manchester Tuesday – but that has now been postponed due to weather.

The Raiders and Rebels will get back to action Wednesday, March 23, weather permitting. The JV will play at 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow. The Raiders are looking to end a 4 game losing skid.

Bass Club juniors show out at spring opener

On Saturday March 19 2022, the Coffee County Youth Bass club juniors fished the spring opener for the Central Division. Despite a very cold windy morning, they were able to battle it out and weigh some fish.

Here’s how they finished:

Anglers Dixon Heflin and Pierce Smith visited the scales for their 1st time with a full bag! These boys had 5 fish weighing in 12.12lbs, securing them a 5th place finish for the day. They currently sit in 14th place in the region points race.

Anglers Kasen and Kaleb Page, better known as Team Page, ended the day with 1 fish tipping the scales at 2.31lbs. Team Page has the 6th spot in the points race in the Central Division.Anglers Kaiden Gannon and Tristan Spencer joined the team and this was their first event. Despite not catching any fish to weigh in, they had several bites and grinded it out until the very end.

All 3 junior teams will be back in action on March 27 in the Tennessee Bass Nation MEGA tournament on Lake Chickamauga

HS BASEBALL: Raiders drop 4th straight with district opening loss to Franklin County

The opening of District 6-4A did not go the way of the Raiders Monday night, as Coffee County Central dropped their league opener 8-4 on the road to Franklin County.

The loss marks 4 straight for CHS after opening up with a win over Riverdale on March 14.

Monday night in Winchester, the Raiders fell behind 8-0 before finally adding four runs in the top of the seventh to make things interesting.

The Raiders only had one extra base hit in the game – a triple from freshman Cole Pippenger. Pippenger also had an RBI and a run scored.

Franklin County was able to chase Red Raider starter Jacob Holder early. Holder allowed 4 runs over 1 2/3. He walked 5 and allowed just one hit.

The district series moves to Manchester at 6 p.m. Tuesday. That game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio – 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM and on the Manchester Go app.

MS SCOREBOARD: Raider baseball remains perfect; CMS softball beats Westwood

Coffee Middle School’s Red Raiders remain unbeaten in conference play with a 6-4 win over South Monday night in Manchester.

Coffee County ended up with 2 RBIs from Yancer – including a walkoff double to give the Raides the win.

The Raiders also go an RBI and a hit from Landan Abellana and an RBI out of AJ Schuster, who walked twice.

Abellana picked up the win in relief – allowing no runs over two 1/3 innings work. Caleb Crouch got a no decision – he struck out 7 batters and allowed 2 earned runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings work.

Coffee Middle Softball 9, Westwood 1

The CMS Lady Raiders breezed past Westwood in a cross-town rivalry Monday, 9-1.

Kaylee Buckley earned the win in the circle for Coffee County – striking out 4 batters and allowing just three hits over five innings of work.

Westwood’s Lily Norman was tagged with the loss. She allowed 9 runs (only 1 earned) and 10 hits while striking out 6 Lady Raider batters over 7 innings. Westwood’s defense committed four errors.

For the Lady Raiders, Ella Arnold and Taylor McBride each had two RBIs at the plate. Arnold tripled and Buckley and Maggie Montgomery added doubles.

Westwood had one extra base hit – a triple from Jules Ferrell.

HS SOFTBALL: Lady Raiders shutout in Monday home loss

Hits were hard to come by for Coffee County Central as the Lady Raiders were shutout at home Monday night – falling 3-0 to Columbia Academy.

The Lady Raiders managed just one hit – a single from senior Kiya Ferrell.

The rest of the game CHS struggled by Columbia Academy’s Slaughter, who struck out 13 Lady Raiders.

CHS was outhit 7-1.

Freshman Channah Gannon was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on six hits. Kaitlyn Davis tossed three scoreless innings in relief for CHS.

The loss drops the Lady Raiders to 4-3 on the young season.

CHS will get much needed days off before returning to action Thursday.

HS SOFTBALL: Lady Raiders blast Tullahoma 11-2 Sunday afternoon

Coffee County took the lead in the first inning and never looked back, pounding out 10 hits as the Lady Raiders dispatched of Tullahoma’s Lady Wildcats 11-2 Sunday afternoon in Tullahoma. (a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.)

CHS scored 3 in the first and 7 in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

The Lady Raiders had a big day at the plate, getting multi-hit games from Haidyn Campbell, Cheyenne Vickers and Kaitlyn Davis.

And it was a power display, too. Vickers launched a 2-run home run through the wind in the first and CHS also got extra base hits from Campbell (2 RBI double) and Davis (2 RBI double).

Emily Schuster scored 3 times – reaching on an error, walk and a single.

Coffee County wore Tullahoma out on the bases, too, with 7 stolen bases. Olivia Evans stole a pair while Vickers, Kiya Ferrell, Schuster, Kara Wheeler and Riley Phillips all stole a base.

Davis was dominant for the Lady Raiders in the circle and earned the win. She was perfect through three innings. She finished having allowed 1 earned run on two hits while striking out 9 Lady Wildcat batters.

Tullahoma’s only two runs were scored by Kylee Holt, who reached on two infield singles and scored on an RBI fielder’s vhoice by Madison Goad and an RBI sac fly from Goad.

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

In a tournament held in Manchester, the Coffee County Red Raiders split – falling 4-2 to Green Hill and beating Fayetteville 2-0.

Against Green Hill, John Martinez and Samuel Medina each picked up goals in the loss. Meanwhile, in a shutout win over Fayetteville, the Raiders got goals from Emmanuel Rodriguez and John Martinez. CHS will host Columbia Monday.

CHS Baseball 0, Oakland 1

The Red Raiders got a triple from Cole Pippenger and a double from Jacob Sherrill but were unable to push a run across, falling to Oakland 1-0 Saturday afternoon in Murfreesboro.

Sherrill was tagged with the tough-luck loss on the mound – giving up 1 run on three hits over two innings of work.

Timothy Henderson was solid on the mound for the Raiders. He struck out 7 batters while allowing just one hit over four innings.

Oakland got its only run in the first and that was enough to hold up. The loss is three straight for the Raiders, who fall to 1-3. They open district play this week with a two-game series with Franklin County. They play at Franklin County at 6 p.m. Monday then host the Rebels at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

CHS Softball 0, Tolono Unity Rockets 3

In a tournament at Cookeville, the Lady Raiders couldn’t muster any hits in a 3-0 shutout loss. CHS committed three defensive errors.

Kaitlyn Davis was tagged with the loss in the circle. She allowed 2 earned runs while striking out 3 in four innings.

CHS Softball 4, Central Magnet 1

Coffee County got some different faces into the lineup and they took care of business with a 4-1 win over Central Magnet Saturday in Cookeville.

Willow Carden, Paisley Campbell and Samantha Cothran all picked up RBIs at the plate – Carden’s coming on a solo home run in the first to put CHS up 1-0. Carden finished with 2 hits.

Cothran earned the win in the circle, allowing 1 unearned run on one hit and two strikeouts.

CHS Softball 5, Knox Halls 0

Coffee County outhit Knoxville Halls 7-2 and got two RBIs out of Haidyn Campbell in a 5-0 shutout win Saturday in Cookeville.

Kiya Ferrell finished with a double for the Lady Raiders and Olivia Evans was 2-for-2 with an RBI.

Freshman Channah Gannon picked up the win – pitching a shutout while allowing just 2 hits and four strikeouts.

CHS Softball 1, Powell 3

The Lady Raiders mixed in an alternate lineup against Powell and held their own, but came up short in a 3-1 loss.

Alivia Reel scored the only run for CHS when Riley Phillips reached on an error. Jada Bowen, Phillips and Cheyenne Vickers had the only three hits for CHS.

Katelyn Anderson was hit with the loss in the circle for the Lady Raiders. Anderson allowed 3 runs (none of them earned) on five hits. She struck out 1. CHS committed 2 errors in the loss.

SOCCER: Westwood wins crosstown showdown with Coffee Middle

Westwood jumped on top of Coffee County Middle early and never let up, pulling away for a dominating 6-0 win over the crosstown Red Raiders Friday evening at Dyer-Bouldin Field.

The Rockets led 2-0 at the break behind a pair of goals from Joan Deanda.

Then Junior Petatan got in on the action — 8 minutes into the second half Petatan found the back of the net on an assist from Joel Ramirez. Then Petatan nearly went the length of the whole field to push the Rockets lead to 4-0. Westwood tacked on goals from Ramirez and Matthew White.

Unofficially, the Rockets outshot the Raiders 14-2 on the afternoon. Joren Bylsma pitched a shutout in goal for the Rockets.

HS BASEBALL: Raiders drop to 1-2 after loss at Columbia

Coffee County’s baseball team fell to 1-2 on the year after a 7-5 road loss to former district foe Columbia Thursday night (March 17, 2022).

Coffee County led 2-0 early and then 4-3. But Columbia tacked on two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to pull away.

Aiden Robertson started on the mound for the Raiders and allowed 3 runs (2 earned) over four innings of work while striking out 8 Lion batters. Brady Daugherty was tagged with the loss in relief. John McKelvey allowed pair of runs in one inning and Cole Pippenger walked one and struck out 2 after entering the game with two inherited runners.

Carter McKenzie had a big night at the plate for the Raiders – knocking in 3 runs on two hits – including a home run. Pippenger had two hits, an RBI and a run scored.

The Raiders fall to 1-2 with the loss. Columbia picked up its first win over the year to move to 1-2.

Bad inning costs CMS Lady Raiders in Thursday loss

Coffee County and Lincoln County were in a defensive battle Thursday – until the 5th inning.

The wheels came off for the Lady Raiders in the fifth when the Lady Falcons used 3 defensive errors and pounded out five hits to push across 7 runs and beat the CMS Lady Raiders 7-0 – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.

Coffee County had opportunities early in the game to take the lead but couldn’t capitalize.

Coffee County’s Taylor McBride singled to start the third inning. But Jaydee Nogodula’s bunt was snagged in the air and McBride was doubled off first. Ella Arnold singled with 2 outs and worked her way around to third on a stolen base and a bad throw – but she was stranded there.

After that threat the Lady Raiders didn’t get another runner on base as Lincoln County pitcher Kya Edwards retired 12 straight.

Hayleigh Skipper pitched 4 solid innings before running into trouble in the fifth for CMS – she was tagged with the loss.
