Coffee County scored a run and then loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the seventh, but Warren County’s Layne Roberts pitched his way out of trouble with a strikeout, leaving the bases loaded and the CHS Red Raiders with a 5-4 District 6-4A loss Monday night in McMinnville.
The loss drops the Raiders to 3-6 overall, 1-2 in district play. The Raiders and Pioneers will be back at it Tuesday night, this time in Manchester, to complete the two-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Powers Field.
Monday night in McMinnville, the Raiders fell behind in the second inning and never fully recovered. Warren County scored 2 in the second and then one apiece in the third, fourth and fifth innings to take a 5-3 lead into the seventh frame.
After drawing a walk and stealing second base, Coffee County’s Caleb Moran scored on a throwing error by the Pioneers to cut the deficit to 5-4. With two outs, Jacob Holder Walked, Aiden Robertson singled and Nate Rutledge was intentionally walked to load the bases. But a Roberts strikeout of Brendan Sheppard with a nasty curveball ended the game.
Holder fell to 0-2 in district starts – allowing 5 runs (3 earned) over 4 innings of work. He allowed 4 hits and struck out 5, but walked 6 Pioneer batters. Timothy Henderson tossed two perfect innings in relief, striking out 4 and now allowing a hit or a walk.
Brady Nugent, Holder and Robertson each picked up an RBI at the plate for the Raiders. Nugent had two hits, including a double. Holder smacked a triple. The Raiders outhit the Pioneers 5-4 – but each team made 4 defensive errors.
Coffee County tennis sweeps Franklin County
The Coffee County Red Raider and Lady Raider tennis teams made quick work of Franklin County Friday, sweeping the Rebels and Rebelettes 7-0 and 7-0.

Raider soccer goes 1-2 over weekend
Coffee County Central’s boys soccer team went 1-2 over the weekend in a Chattanooga area tournament.
The Raiders were shutout twice – falling 3-0 to Walker Valley and 6-0 to Signal Mountain.
The Raiders did get a 2-1 win over Cleveland. CHS picked up goals by John Martinez (assisted by Josue Salinas) and Emmanuel Rodriguez (assisted by Samuel Medina) for the game winner.
HS SOFTBALL: Lady Raiders fall to 5-6 with two losses Saturday
Coffee County’s Lady Raiders scored 2 runs in the top of the 7th but couldn’t complete a comeback against South Gipson in the Warrior Classic Saturday afternoon, falling 6-5.
Jalyn Moran had a big day at the plate for CHS – ripping a pair of hits and 3 RBIs. Kaitlyn Davis blasted her first home run of the year – a 2-run shot. But it wasn’t enough for CHS to keep up.
Davis allowed 6 runs in the circle over 5 innings and was hit with the loss.
CHS didn’t perform well at all in the early morning 8 a.m. game against East Peoria, losing 10-1. CHS was outhit 12-3 and trailed 10-0 before finally getting on the board. Haidyn Campbell launched a solo home run for Coffee County’s only run of the game.
The Lady Raiders will host Shelbyville at 7 p.m. Tuesday in their first district game of the year.
HS BASEBALL: Raiders win thriller in extra innings over Tullahoma
Coffee County Central’s Red Raiders gave up the lead in the bottom of the 7th, but rebounded for 2 in the top of the 9th inning to beat Tullahoma 8-7 at Grider Stadium Saturday night.
A Brady Nugent bunt single combined with a Tullahoma throwing error pushed Trey Turner and Cole Pippenger across the plate to push the Raiders on top 8-6 in the second extra inning.
The Wildcats got a sacrifice fly to score a run in the bottom of the inning but Brady Nugent slammed the game shut on the mound for the Raiders.
Nugent earned the win on teh mound.
Jacob Sherrill started and pitched the first 4 innings for the Raiders. He allowed 4 unearned runs while striking out 4 and allowing just 2 hits. He was in line for the win before Tullahoma scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
Freshman Cole Pippenger had a big night at the plate. Pippenger rattled off 4 hits, an RBI, scored twice and was hit by a pitch. Caleb Moran, Jacob Holder and Andrew Dawson (2) also notched RBIs for the Raiders, who improve to 3-5 win the win.
Coffee County will have a 2-game District 6-4A series with Warren County Monday (away) and Tuesday (home). First pitch is set for 6 p.m. both nights.

Westwood baseball cruises to 10-2 win over Liberty
Isaiah Deadman and Elijah Vernon combined to toss a 3-hitter and the Westwood Rockets got 3 RBIs from Davis McKenzie in a 10-2 win over Liberty Friday – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio as part of the Peoples Bank & Trust Hometown Sports Series.
The Rockets outhit the Patriots 10-3 and scored at least 1 run in every inning.
Carter Bell had a big day at the plate for the Rockets, pounding out two hits, a run scored and an RBI.
Deadman picked up the win on the mound. He struck out 6 and allowed no runs on just 1 hit. Vernon struck out 7 while not allowing any walks.
The win improves the Rockets to 5-2.
Stewarts Creek 20, Coffee Middle Softball 5
Coffee County tied up Stewarts Creek 4-4 in the bottom of the fourth inning before things went south. The Lady Red Hawks ripped out 22 hits and scored 8 in the 5th and 6 in the 7th to drop CMS 20-5.
Madi Scott picked up 3 RBIs on two hits for CMS.
CHS Softball falls to South Elgin 13-4
CHS got outhit 16-7 and lost 13-4 Friday afternoon in the Warrior Classic. South Elgin took a 12-0 lead before the Lady Raiders were able to get off the mat.
Olivia Evans and Riley Phillips had extra base hits for CHS. Haidyn Campbell, Phillips and Katelyn Anderson all had RBIs.
Gannon was tagged with the loss – allowing 9 runs on 11 hits.
Coffee Middle baseball moves to 9-1 with 9-5 win over Rossview
Two runs in the first and two in the second set the tone for Coffee Middle in a 9-5 win over Rossview Friday afternoon in non-conference action.
AJ Schuster had 2 hits, including a double and a pair of RBIs. Yancer earned the win on the mound – allowing 2 earned runs while striking out 3 and allowing 3 hits over 4 innings.
HS SOFTBALL: Lady Raiders pick up Warrior Classic win Thursday
Haidyn Campbell ripped a line drive to score Chesnie Cox and Kiya Ferrell in the bottom of the 7th inning and send the Lady Raiders off with a 7-5 win over the Canton Lady Giants in the Warrior Classic Thursday afternoon in Murfreesboro.
Channah Gannon picked up the win in relief for the Ladyh Raiders. She allowed one run over 2 innings while walking three and striking out 1. Kaitlyn Davis picked up a no decision. She allowed 4 runs on 4 hits while striking out 4.
Senior Kiya Ferrell led the charge at the plate for CHS with 3 runs scored on 2 hits and a walk.
The Lady Raiders will be back in action Friday at 2 p.m. against South Elgin Storm before taking on the East Peoria Raiders at 8 a.m. Saturday and the South Gibson Lady Hornets at 2 p.m. Saturday.
SOCCER: Westwood pummels Webb 9-0
Westwood’s Rocket soccer team beat visiting Webb School like a drum on Wednesday – using goals from 5 different players to cruise to a 9-0 win.
Junior Petatan finished with a hat trick, finding the back of the net on three separate occasions. He also picked up a pair of assists. Also scoring for the Rockets were Joel Barrera with 2 goals, Joan Deanda, Aiden Walker and William Rogers with 1 goal apiece.
Picking up assists for Westwood were Deanda (2), Barrera (2), Walker (1), Matthew White (1), Rogers (1) and Micah Anderson (1).
The Rockets dominated so much that Webb wasn’t even able to get off a single shot on goal.
The Rockets will be back in action Friday, March 25 when they host Fayetteville City at 5:30 p.m.
HS BASEBALL: Robertson strikes out 14 as Raiders even up district record

A 5-run bottom of the first inning and a 14-strikeout performance on the mound from Aiden Robertson led the Coffee County Central Red Raiders to an 8-2 District 6-4A win over Franklin County Wednesday afternoon in Manchester – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.
The Raiders set the tone early – taking a 5-0 lead in the bottom half of the first. Freshman leadoff hitter got the ball rolling with a double to leftfield. Junior Jacob Holder came to the plate and blasted a double to the left-centerfield gap to plate a pair of runs. Holder finished the night with two hits and a pair of RBIs – he drove in two more in the bottom of the fifth.
Caleb Moran also had an RBI for the Raiders on a single.
That was plenty of offense for Robertson. The junior right-hander cruised through the Rebel lineup with little resistance. He went the distance, striking out 14 batters while only allowing four hits – 3 on infield singles. He was named Thunder Radio player of the game – insured by Brett Harris with Farmers Insurance.

Peyton Miller was hit with the loss for the Rebels. He allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on four hits and did not record an out before being replaced by Josh Stoltzfus, who struck out 9 Raiders and allowed 2 runs on no hits over the next 3 2/3.
The Raiders are now 2-4 overall and 1-1 in district play. They return to action Thursday at Middle Tennessee Christian School.

CMS Raiders roll South to remain unbeaten in CTC play
Austin Gipson allowed two unearned runs and struck out 4 in five solid innings of work as the Coffee Middle Raiders run-ruled South 12-2 Wednesday night.
Coffee County only managed 4 hits but drew 11 walks at the plate. Jace Cashion and Landan Abellana each had a pair of RBIs for the Raiders in the win.
CMS led 5-0 but busted things open with a 7-run fifth inning.
