Nashville SC Earns Crucial Point in Saturday Draw with Pittsburgh

Two defensively sound clubs each kept their net clean as Nashville Soccer Club and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC played to a 0-0 draw at First Tennessee Park on Saturday night. With the point earned, Nashville is just one point behind a trio of clubs in first place in the East and remains in the top four of the conference.

Nashville was the dominant team throughout the 90 minutes as a red card shown to Pittsburgh defender Tobi Adewole in the 40’ minute changed the course of the match. Up a man, Nashville SC controlled more than 75% of the possession and searched for a winner. The Riverhounds ‘parked the bus’ making it nearly impossible for Nashville to break them down.

The backline of the Boys in Gold was just as impressive, limiting Pittsburgh to just five shots and none on target. Nashville defender Forrest Lasso was not in the lineup after a late week leg injury, but the trio of Jimmy Ockford, Bradley Bourgeois and Ken Tribbett shut the Hounds down for all 90 minutes.

Here are three takeaways from Nashville’s third consecutive home result.

1) Ríos Returns to the Starting Lineup

The Eastern Conference’s leading scorer, Daniel Ríos, made his return to the Starting XI following a substitute appearance on Tuesday night. Ríos missed three matches prior to that with a groin injury, but was impactful in his 73 minutes on Saturday, registering two shots including the match’s best look in the 11’ minute. Ríos chested down a flicked on ball from Matt LaGrassa and deked around a defender. His low shot was saved by the Riverhounds keeper, denying the forward his 18th goal of the season.

2) Pickens Gets Clean Sheet No. 101

One match after registering his 100th career shutout, NSC keeper Matt Pickens earned clean sheet 101 in the 0-0 draw. It will be one of the least stressful shutouts for Pickens who didn’t register an official save as Nashville’s defense held Pittsburgh to no shots on goal. It’s the 11th clean sheet for Pickens on the season, the second most of any USL Championship keeper in 2019.

3) Tighter at the Top

One single point now separates the top four teams in the Eastern Conference standings after the results on Saturday night. Louisville City’s 5-3 win over New York Red Bulls II means that New York, Indy Eleven and Tampa Bay Rowdies are all tied at the top with 56 points. Nashville SC is just one point behind with 55. Nashville has four matches remaining, three at home, to solidify its status as a top four team. One of those four spots would mean Nashville SC hosting a home match in the playoffs.

Up Next

Nashville SC will have a full week to prepare for its final road match of the season at Loudoun United FC. Nashville beat Loudoun in its season opener 2-0 at First Tennessee Park in March. Loudoun remains outside the playoff race with a 6-15-6 record this year. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Segra Field in Leesburg, Virginia.

The Coffee County CHS soccer team traveled to Tullahoma on Thursday night looking to recapture the coveted Coffee Cup Trophy, sponsored by First Vision Bank.  Despite playing short-handed for the last 8:30 of regulation, the Lady Raiders overcame an early Tullahoma lead and won the match in penalty kicks.  Coffee County captured the 2 to 1 win.

Tullahoma got on the board first when they scored in the 19th minute on a breakaway goal when the Lady Cat forward appeared to be offside.  Maddy Jones tied it in the 27th minute when she converted a long through pass off a free kick from Jayda Wright to level the match at 1.  The 2 teams battled inside the final 10 minutes totally even before a red card foul on Lady Raider keeper Lucy Riddle was assessed for a slide tackle outside the 18 yard box.  Alana Coker came off the bench to play in goal but the Lady Raiders were forced to survive the final 8:30 while being 1 player short.

With the score tied at the end of regulation, a PK shootout was initiated to award the trophy given annually to the winner of the rivalry match.  The Lady Raiders hammered home their first 4 penalty shots and back-up goal keeper Madison Rooker stopped a pair of Tullahoma shots, to give Coffee County the win.  Jayda Wright, Katie Cotton, Reyna Flores, and Jenna Garretson had the PK goals for the Lady Raiders.

The win moves the Lady Raiders record to 8-1-2 on the season.  The Lady Raiders will be back at home on Monday and Tuesday as they welcome Warren County and Shelbyville to the Raider Soccer Field at the Raider Academy.  Both games will get underway at 7 PM and Thunder Radio will be on hand BOTH nights to bring you the action as part of the 1st National Bank Hometown Sports Series.

The JV Lady Raiders will take part this week-end in a JV Tournament at Franklin County.  Coffee County will take on Walker Valley at 10 AM, Tullahoma at 12:30 and Franklin County at 1:10 PM.  All those games will take place at Franklin County High School.

Titans Fall 20-7 to Jaguars, Drop to 1-2

Story by Jim Wyatt, TitansOnline.com

Rain fell from the Florida sky here on Thursday night, but it didn’t wash away the Titans’ sins.

And on this night, there were plenty.

A primetime game against the Jacksonville Jaguars produced disappointing results here at TIAA Bank Field – a 20-7 loss when not many things went right.

Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was sacked nine times in the contest and has now been sacked 17 times in the team’s first three contests.

Running back Derrick Henry couldn’t get going, as he was contained by Jacksonville defense nine months after racking up 238 yards and four touchdowns against the Jaguars.

The Titans had beaten the Jaguars four straight and six of seven games heading into the contest.

But the streak ended, as the Titans dropped to 1-2.

It was a dreadful start for the Titans, and things never really got a whole lot better.

Return man Adoree’ Jackson muffed a punt after the Titans defense got an early stop, and the Jaguars recovered at the Tennessee 10-yard line. On the very next play, Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew connected with tight end James O’Shaughnessy for a 10-yard touchdown to give Jacksonville an early 7-0 lead.

It became 14-0 not long after, as Minshew directed another drive and capped it off with a 22-yard touchdown pass to DJ Chark. Titans cornerback Malcolm Butler was in coverage on a pair of big completions on the drive.

Meanwhile, the Titans couldn’t get anything going on offense.

Mariota completed just 6-of-16 passes for 62 yards in the first half, as the Titans managed just five first downs.

The Titans put together their best drive of the game on their opening drive of the second half. But the Titans turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert a 4th and 6 from the Jacksonville 11 as Mariota was sacked. On the drive, Mariota connected with receiver Tajae Sharpe for a 47-yard gain, but the Titans couldn’t take advantage of it. A pair of passes to tight end Delanie Walker from the 11-yard line fell incomplete.

The Jaguars then drove the field and extended their lead to 17-0 on a 40-yard field goal by kicker Josh Lambo.

The Titans finally got on the scoreboard with 12:04 left in the contest on a one-yard touchdown run by Henry, which capped a six-play, 66-yard drive. Mariota connected with Walker and receiver Corey Davis for big plays on the drive to set up the score.

Lambo added a 48-yard field goal with 7:34 left, however, as the Jaguars stretched their lead to 20-7.

The Titans travel to Atlanta to face the Falcons on September 29.
