A two out double in the top of the 7th by Kaitlyn Davis and a passed ball gave the Coffee County Central Lady Raiders a 4-2 road district win at Warren County Tuesday night.
With the score tied 2-2 going into the 7th and final inning, sophomore Chesnie Cox led off with a single for the Lady Raiders. The Lady Pioneers recorded two quick strikeouts before Davis doubled on a line drive to left field to score Cox and put CHS in front. A passed ball allowed Kara Wheeler (running for Davis) to motor around and give CHS an insurance run.
Warren County got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but Emily Schuster snagged a pop up and doubled the runner off first to end the threat.
The game was tied at 2-2 after both teams pushed across a pair in the third inning. Coffee County senior Kiya Ferrell doubled home Olivia Evans to put CHS in front. Ferrell later scored on an error.
Cox and Evans each finished with a pair of hits for the Lady Raiders. Evans also recorded a stolen base, along with Cox and Haidyn Campbell. Davis, Cox and Ferrell all doubled.
Davis picked up the win in the circle. She allowed 10 hits and struck out 3. Neither Warren County run was earned. Davis did not issue a walk.
The Lady Raiders improve to 7-6 overall with the win and 2-0 in District 6-4A play. They are set to host Franklin County at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6 weather permitting. That game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio:107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM, Manchester Go app and thunder1320.com.
Raider infielder McKenzie done for the season with torn ACL
Coffee County Central’s baseball team received tough, but expected news on Tuesday. Starting infielder Carter McKenzie is done for the season with a torn ACL.
McKenzie, a junior, started mainly at third base for the Raiders last year. He was expected to fill in at first base this year and would have been used on the mound. McKenzie was hurt within the season’s first week and finally received an official diagnosis on Tuesday.
“Carter is a pillar of our program and our team has missed him this year in several facets,” said CHS head coach Kyle Douglas. “However, he’s going to be a force coming out for next year.”
The Raiders (5-8) have had a few injuries early in the season. Starting first baseman Nolan Jernigan has been sidelined with shoulder and hamstring injuries and pitcher Charlie Pierce is out for the year with an elbow. Jernigan is expected to return to the lineup soon.
CHS will host Shelbyville at 6 p.m. Thursday at Powers Field. It is First Responders Night at the ball park.

MLB: Fried tapped as Braves opening day starter
April 7 marks the day the Braves begin the quest to defend their 2021 World Series title, and Max Fried is the guy who’ll lead the charge.
The decision came down to either Fried or Charlie Morton, a pair of frontline starters that had both earned Opening Day starts, in 2021 and 2020, respectively. It was a difficult call to make for manager Brian Snitker, who has kept the pair on the same schedule for most of the spring to allow for the option of either earning the honor.
Tough as it may have been, Snitker was quick to recognize that it was a problem Atlanta was fortunate to have.
“It’s kind of like when we had [Greg] Maddux, [Tom] Glavine and [John] Smoltz,” he said Sunday. “You can’t go wrong with any of your choices.”
In the end, Fried will get the ball on Opening Day when Atlanta opens against the Reds at Truist Park.
It marks the second consecutive Opening Day nod for Fried, and he’s certainly earned the honor. After a 6-5 record and 4.71 ERA to kick off the 2021 season, the 28-year-old lefty steadily gained steam and had MLB’s best ERA (1.74) in the second half to complement an 11-3 record.
Hear the Atlanta Braves all season long on Thunder Radio – listed by Kasidy Lowe with Compass Real Estate.
HS SOFTBALL: Lady Raiders throttle Shelbyville in district opener
Coffee County’s Lady Raider softball team announced its presence in the new District 6-4A with authority Tuesday night.
Coffee County outhit Shelbyville 14-1 and ended the game early with 2 runs in the bottom of the sixth for a run-rule shortened 10-0 shutout win at Terry Floyd Field in Manchester – a game you heard live on Thunder Radio.
It was a parade at the plate for Coffee County. Kaitlyn Davis and Cheyenne Vickers each doubled and Kiya Ferrell and Emily Schuster legged out triples as CHS finished with 4 extra base hits.
Davis, Chesnie Cox and Haidyn Campbell each picked up a pair of RBIs. Ferrell, Schuster, Madison Pruitt and Olivia Evans also knocked in a run. Ferrell had 3 hits on the night and scored twice.
In the circle – Davis dominated the Eaglettes. She picked up the win after allowing just 1 hit and striking out 3 over 5 innings. Katelyn Anderson tossed a perfect inning of relief.
The Lady Raiders even up their overall record at 6-6 win the win and are 1-0 in District 6-4A play. They aren’t schedule to play again until next week.
Moran homers, Raiders split district series with Warren County
Caleb Moran blasted a 2-run home run and Aiden Robertson tossed his second complete-game to power the Red Raiders past Warren County 6-1 Tuesday night at Powers Field in Manchester.
The Raiders improve to 4-6 overall with the win and even up their District 6-4A record at 2-2.
It was a much-needed bounce back win for Coffee County after dropping a tough decision Monday night in McMinnville.
Tuesday night was a different story. The Raiders took the lead in the first and never gave it up behind the strong right-arm of Robertson, who struck out 10 batters over 7 innings of work while only allowing 4 hits and 1 unearned run. He needed just 89 pitches to complete all 7 innings.
Meanwhile, at the plate Moran blasted a 2-run home run and freshman Cole Pippenger was 2-for-4 with a run scored and a pair of RBIs. Robertson added 3 hits and an RBI at the plate.
