Though the journey was different, the Braves still embraced a
familiar sense of satisfaction after securing a third straight National League
East title with an 11-1 win over the Marlins on Tuesday night at Truist Park.
Marcell
Ozuna accounted for two of the five home runs the Braves hit on the way to
winning a third consecutive division title for the first time since they won an
unprecedented 14 consecutive division crowns from 1991-2005. The franchise’s 20
division championships are the most in Major League history.
Ozuna hit a solo homer
in the first against José Ureña and then gained the NL lead when he tallied his
17th homer of the season in the eighth. The former Marlins outfielder provided
the Braves even more than expected when he was signed to help balance out Josh
Donaldson’s departure in January.
Freddie Freeman, Dansby Swanson and Ozzie Albies also went deep
for the Braves, who have hit an MLB-best 50 homers in September, leaving them
six shy of the single-month franchise record set in June 2019.
Albies’
solo shot in the second against Ureña provided some early comfort to Bryse
Wilson, who recorded seven strikeouts, issued just one walk and tossed five
scoreless innings in his first start of the season. He was promoted from the
alternate training site when the Braves learned Tuesday’s scheduled starter
Cole Hamels was dealing with a fatigued left shoulder.
Monday was a solid night for the Central High School
football program as the junior varsity Red Raiders and Freshman Red Raiders
both picked up wins over visiting White County at Carden-Jarrell Field.
The JV Raiders put together a 14-7 win. Meanwhile, the
Freshman Raiders jumped all over the Warriors and led 43-0 at halftime. White
County scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the score
43-12.
The Coffee County Middle School volleyball team dropped
crosstown rival Westwood 2-0 in a best-of-three match Monday. It was eighth
grade night for the Lady Rockets.
CMS picked up wins of
25-20 and 25-19.
Despite the loss, Westwood had a solid night at the service
line from Rylee Clark who picked up four aces and a dig.
The win marks the fourth consecutive for Coffee Middle and
improves the Lady Raiders to 11-3.
All
three phases of the game put points on the board Friday night and the Coffee
County Red Raider football team dropped visiting Siegel High School 31-21.
The win
improves the Raiders to 2-2 on the season and 1-1 in Region 3-6A play, very
much in the hunt of the early-season playoff picture.
Coffee County
scored early on a long 80-yard drive that ate seven minutes off the clock to go
on top 7-0. Senior tailback Marshall Haney capped the drive with a 16-yard
scoring run.
Haney was a
workhorse for the Raiders, finishing with 97 yards on 28 carries. He also
caught a pair of passes for 32 yards.
Connor Shemwell
directed the offense well for Coffee County at quarterback, completing 12-of-19
passes, including a 15 yard touchdown strike to tight end Zack Galy and a 21
yard score to Travis Martin. Shemwell threw for 214 yards
Galy
caught his first three passes on the season, including his first touchdown
grab.
The punctuation
on the exciting first half for the Raiders was an interception by senior CJ
Anthony, who returned the ball 75 yards for a touchdown.
The
Raiders put the game away in the fourth quarter on a 30-yard Ian Weldon field
goal to take a 31-14 lead. Weldon is now 3-of-3 on the year kicking field
goals.
