HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Raiders bounce back big, destroy Warren County

Losing basketball games doesn’t set well with the Central High School Lady Raiders.

Warren County learned that the hard way Thursday night at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium in Manchester.

Bella Vinson stroked 27 points through the net and two other Lady Raiders reached double figures in a 66-22 blowout of the visiting Lady Pioneers. The win comes after the Lady Raiders’ first loss of the season Tuesday night against Blackman.

“We had our first loss of the season [and we talked about] how do you respond,” said CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope during his postgame press conference with Thunder Radio. “We talked at halftime because we were upset giving up 12 points [tonight]. We only gave up 10 in the second half and that’s playing everybody. The girls played hard.”

Vinson ripped off 27 points to lead the way for Coffee County, including three 3-pointers.

Early on it was Chloe Gannon dominating in the paint. The sophomore post finished with 16 points on the night and helped Coffee County build an 18-6 first quarter lead as CHS focused on the post.

“We just put something in where we were using all three – Bella, Chloe and Elli (Chumley) in the post at the same time tonight,” explained Cope.

Sophomore point guard Jalie Ruehling got hot in the second half and hit three 3-pointers to finish with 14 points.

Alivia Reel had her midrange jumpshot going to finish with 6. Emma Fulks added 3 points for Coffee County.

Erica Cantrell had six points for Warren County.

“We still got a long way to go in our zone rotation,” added Cope. “We should hold that team under 10 points if we are going to play at Blackman’s level. And we can.”

Warren County falls to 3-2 with the loss.

The Lady Raiders are now 5-1 on the season and will play at Goodpasture Saturday at 4:30 p.m. You can hear that game live on Thunder Radio (107.9 FM, 106.7 FM, 1320 AM, Manchester Go smartphone app, thunder1320.com, and on Amazon Alexa: “Alexa, play Thunder Radio.”)

The Red Raider basketball boys have put together pieces of good games through their first four.

On Tuesday night against Blackman, it all came together.

Coffee County took a 27-22 halftime deficit and turned it into a 50-45 win over the Blackman Blaze in Manchester, dropping a team that eliminated the Raiders from the postseason a year ago.

Tyler Taylor came off the bench for Coffee County and hit three 3-pointers, including two huge shots in the fourth quarter on back-to-back possessions  to put the Raiders in front 43-42 with 3 minutes to play. From there the Raiders never trailed again to  improve to 3-2 on the season.

Hear the Thunder Radio audio from Tyler Taylor’s second fourth-quarter three pointer against Blackman.

CJ Anthony led the way for Coffee County with 16 points he also knocked down two big 3-pointers in the second half to help the Raiders outscore the Blaze 28-18 in the final two periods. Both Anthony and Tyler were named Stone Fort Mortgage co-players of the game on Thunder Radio’s broadcast.

Six different Raiders were able to get into the scorebook – including seniors Kyle Farless and Hayden Hullett who added 9 and 7 points, respectively. Connor Shemwell pitched in five and Jaxon Vaughn four. The Raiders were 10-of-12 at the free throw line – which helped them seal the game at the end.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Slow start dooms Lady Raiders in loss to Blackman

Coffee County’s Lady Raider basketball team has either dominated every game or found a way to scrape together a win all season.

That is until Tuesday night in Manchester.

Blackman, widely considered one of the top three teams in the state of Tennessee, came into Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gynnasium and took a 17-4 first quarter lead on its way to a 56-40 win.

“[Blackman] was very physical but we needed that,” said junior Elli Chumley, who finished with 10 points on the night for the Lady Raiders. “Every game is not going to be a piece of cake.”

Listen to some of CHS head coachJoe Pat Cope’s postgame comments on Thunder Radio here.

Coffee County recovered from the sloppy first quarter and trailed 36-24 at the half. But regardless of some offensive improvement, Blackman was able to do what it wanted on the offensive end of the floor to prevent a Lady Raider run. Victoria Page finished with 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Meanwhile, Kaylee Odom was solid in the paint with 13 points.

“That was my first time in four years here that I thought we played a team that was quicker than us in every position,” said CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope. “That’s a good basketball team. We knew they were athletic, they eliminated us [in the region] last year. We’ve got to watch film, get in here tomorrow and get to that level.”

Senior Bella Vinson led the Lady Raiders in points with 18, Jalie Ruelhing added 10 and Chumley 10. But CHS struggled to get contributions outside of its big three – getting two points from Alivia Reel and everyone else was held off the board.

The loss drops Coffee County to 4-1 on the season. The Lady Raiders will host Warren County at 6 p.m. Thursday. That game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio, beginning with pregame at 5:45 p.m.

BIG TIME BELLA: Lady Raiders mount improbable comeback, beat White County in OT

Lady Raider senior Bella Vinson (right) wins the tip in overtime Tuesday night against White County. Vinson exploded for 21 of her 23 points in the second half, including a game-tying three pointer as time ran out in regulation and four crucial free throws in overtime. (Thunder Radio photo by Holly Peterson)

Big moments are for big players.

And none are too big for Bella.

Coffee County Central’s Bella Vinson drained a 3-pointer with under 8 seconds to play in regulation Tuesday night at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium, tying the game and catapulting the CHS Lady Raiders to a 69-65 win over rival White County in overtime.

With only a few seconds on the clock, Lady Raider Bella Vinson tied the game with this contested shot well behind the 3-point line. The Lady Raiders went on to win in overtime. (play by play by Josh Peterson, Thunder Radio)

Vinson’s heroics capped an improbable comeback for Coffee County. The Lady Raiders trailed 57-49 with a minute to play after committing a turnover and a three-point play by Warriorette Mia Murray.

“We had to keep our team up,” said Vinson about trailing by 8 with less than a minute to play. “The game is not over until the last buzzer and I knew that. We just kept pushing and kept playing hard.”

Bella Vinson talks about the Lady Raiders fighting back from down 8 points with less than a minute to play.

Coffee County clawed back – starting with a 3-pointer from sophomore Jalie Ruehling with 32 seconds to play. Another bucket by Ruehling with 19 seconds to play cut the score to 58-56.

White County missed on a free throw with a 59-56 lead, setting the stage for Vinson to tie the game at 59-59.

Coffee County quickly jumped in front in overtime and held on, using four consecutive free-throws from Vinson to seal the win.

The win moves the Raiders to 3-0 on the young season and avenges two tough losses to the Warriorettes from last season. Something Vinson has been waiting on.

“The way both games ended [last year], they’ve been on our schedule [and] circled,” said Vinson, who finished with 23 points. Of her 23, 21 came in the second half and overtime.

Coffee County trailed 26-25 at the halftime break behind a big first half in the post from sophomore Chloe Gannon, who finished the night with 17 points. Alivia Reel added 11 for Coffee County and Ruehling 8.

“How about Chloe Gannon in the first half,” bragged CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope.

Vinson was named Stone Fort Mortgage player of the game by Thunder Radio.

The Lady Raiders will be back in action Wednesday night in Lynchburg to take on Moore County. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m. and you can listen live on Thunder Radio.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Raiders can’t stop Slatten, fall to Warriors

Red Raider head coach Micah Williams knew that stopping Warrior senior Grant Slatten would be a tough task Tuesday night.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, it was simply not doable. Slatten, a senior Ole Miss signee, ripped off 39 points to lead the Warriors to a 68-50 win over the CHS Red Raiders at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium in Manchester (a game you heard live on Thunder Radio).

The Raiders trailed 18-5 after one quarter but fought back and trailed 31-24 at the half.

White County pulled away behind Slatten in the third quarter to lead 46-31 and led by as many as 21 in the fourth period.

Coffee County fought foul trouble all night – Hayden Hullett fouled out after getting 2 early fouls. Meanwhile, Tyler Taylor, CU Anthony, Kyle Farless and Jaxon Vaughn all finished the game with four fouls. Anthony was forced to sit – leaving Slatten with an easier path to the basket.

Connor Shemwell finished with 14 points for the Raiders, most coming in the paint, to be named Stone Fort Mortgage Player of the Game by Thunder Radio. Anthony was able to drive to the basket for 13 points despite his foul  troubles, and senior forward Jaxon Vaughn scored 12 for CHS.

The Raiders drop to 1-2 on the season with the loss. CHS is set to play in the Cannon County Thanksgiving Classic at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27. You can hear that game live on Thunder Radio.
