Sophomore post Chloe Gannon stepped out of her comfort zone in the second half Saturday afternoon – knocking down a pair of 3-pointers to help lead the Central High School Lady Raiders to a 66-26 win over visiting Goodpasture.

Gannon finished the game with 18 points – 12 coming in the second half, and of those came on two third quarter possessions when she was left unguarded at the top of the arch and drained 3-pointers.

“I’m glad to see Chloe shoot that,” said CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope. “We have to have the confidence that we can knock those down if they are going to leave us open like that.”

Senior Bella Vinson teamed up with Gannon to help the Lady Raiders pull away in the third quarter. Vinson scored 11 of her 22 in the third period, leaving the game with 2 minutes left in the quarter. Vinson finished with a game-high 22 points.

Sophomore guard Jalie Ruehling also got into double digits with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the second half.

The Lady Raiders outscored Goodpasture 30-4 in the third quarter after leading 29-14 at the half.

Also scoring for Coffee County were Elli Chumley with 4 points, Emma Fulks 4, Alivia Reel 3, Princess Penaloza 2 and Remi Benjamin 1.

The win pushes Coffee County to 14-1 on the season. The Lady Raiders will host Lawrence County at 6 p.m. Tuesday. You can hear this game on Thunder Radio beginning with 5:45 p.m. pregame show: 107.9 FM, 106.7 FM, 1320 AM, Manchester Go app and thunder1320.com.

SHELBYVILLE – Tuesday’s game was never in doubt.

The Central High School Lady Raider basketball team picked up double-digit points from four different players and smothered the Eaglettes of Shelbyville, forcing 20 turnovers in a 68-35 win.

“This team has really spoiled us,” said CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope. “We are winning 34-16 at the half and playing pretty good basketball but I’m still not feeling good about it because we weren’t up by 30. This team has really spoiled us.”

Senior Bella Vinson was dominant inside and out – working her way to the basket and also knocking down several midrange jumpers on her way to a 22 point performance.

“I’m still not shooting the ball as well as I would like to be but this was a good night for us. Everyone played well,” said Vinson.

Sophomore point guard Jalie Ruehling got hot behind the three-point line, knocking down four of them on her way to a 15 point performance. Ruehling and Vinson were named Co-players of the game by Thunder Radio.

Sophomore post Chloe Gannon picked up 11 points and Alivia Reel added 11.

“Chloe has really worked hard on getting better angles on her shots,” explained Cope.

Miranda Medley and Holly Hancock each added 3 points, Elli Chumley 2 and Emma Fulks 1 for CHS.

The win improves the Lady Raiders to 12-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in District 8-AAA play.

Coffee County will travel to play rival White County Friday, Jan. 8. CHS beat the Warriorettes in overtime back in November.

“This will be a great challenge for us. Their pressure is unmatched, I can’t wait,” said Vinson.

The game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Lady Raiders, Raiders off most of this week

The Central High School Red Raider and Lady Raider basketball teams have the majority of this week to rest.

However, the CHS Raider boys will travel to Columbia at 4 p.m. Saturday for a boys only District 8-AAA contest. It will be the district opener for the Raider boys.

The Lady Raiders are already 2-0 in district play – beating Franklin County and Columbia in December while the Raider boys were quarantined due to COVID-19 issues.

While the varsity Red Raider basketball team was quarantined, most of the freshman Raiders were able to continue practicing.

That work paid off Thursday in Woodbury. Freshman Jackson Shemwell racked up 21 points and the JV Raiders left Cannon County with a 49-36 win.

Shemwell was able to put up 21 despite not scoring a point in the first quarter.

Timothy Henderson put up a 12 point performance for the Raiders – 9 coming in the second half. Cooper Reed scored 8, with 6 coming in the first quarter to give CHS an 11-9 lead.

Brendon Shepard, Austin Dockery, Jackson Thompson and Caden Davis scored 2 points apiece for CHS.

Miranda Medley went wild – piling up 19 points – but the Central High School Lady Raider junior varsity team fell short in overtime Thursday in Cannon County, losing 36-35.

Medley was consistent throughout in her 19 point performance. She was 5-for-6 at the charity stripe and buried four 3-pointers.

Remi Benjamin scored 6 for the Lady Raiders in the loss, all 6 coming in the first half. Samantha Kirby was 4-for-4 at the free-throw line and finished with 4 points. Kaylee Suggs, Lenora Moreno and Bella Lawson all finished with 2 points apiece.

For Cannon County Reese Vance did most of the damage. She scored 14 points, including three 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to get the game into overtime.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Schedule changes, subtractions and additions for CHS

The Coffee County Central basketball scheduled continues to be a working document with more rescheduled dates and cancelled or postponed games.

The Red Raider boys, who were sidelined for 10 days due to COVID-19 exposure, will be traveling to Columbia for a District 8-AAA game at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 2. The Lady Raiders already played Columbia and picked up a win.

Also, the Raider boys were scheduled to host Franklin County this Friday, Dec. 18 to make up for the game they couldn’t play last week. However, Franklin County has halted all athletics until the new year, forcing that game to be rescheduled. A date is not yet available. The Lady Raiders hosted Franklin County in a girls only contest on Dec. 11 and won 93-13.

The Raider boys were scheduled to play in the Tullahoma Christmas Classic on Dec. 21 and 22 – that tournament has now been cancelled. Head coach Micah Williams has been able to pick up a spot for his team in the Gandy Inc Classic at Van Buren County. Game time are as follows: Friday, Dec. 18 Coffee County vs. Van Buren Co. at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 19 Coffee Co. vs. Silverdale at 5 p.m.; Monday, Dec. 21, Coffee County vs. Clarkrange at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, the game that was added Tuesday, Dec. 15 for the Lady Raiders at Webb School has been cancelled and will not be made up due to the Lady Raiders being too close to their maximum number of games allowed.

The Lady Raiders and Red Raiders both will make up the game that was supposed to be played at Warren County (Monday, Dec. 14) on Feb. 2 in McMinnville. Girls to tip at 6 p.m. with boys to follow.

The Lady Raiders will travel to Portland, Tenn. Dec. 21 and 22 to participate in a Christmas tournament there. CHS will play at 3:30 p.m. Dec. 21 against Pope John Paul II High School, and again at 6:30 p.m. With two wins, the Lady Raiders will play in the championship game on Dec. 22 at 6:30 p.m.

All Red Raider and Lady Raider games can be heard live on Thunder Radio – 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, streaming worldwide at thunder1320.com, Manchester Go smartphone app and TuneInRadio app.
