4/9/12 — Alvin Garland Cates

Alvin Garland Cates, age 79, passed away on April 4, 2012 at his home in Manchester, Tennessee.

A retired Operating Engineer, Mr. Cates was born October 31, 1932 in Huntsville, Alabama to his parents, the late Horace D. Cates and Mamie Henshaw Cates.

He is survived by his loving wife, Clara F. Edgeman Cates of Manchester, Tennessee; sons, Terry Cates, Allen Cates and Gregory Cates; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service with Masonic Rites is scheduled for Monday, April 9, 2012 at 4:00 P.M. at the Chapel of Central Funeral Home in Manchester, Tennessee.

4/6/12 — Marjorie Thomas Marbury

Marjorie Thomas Marbury, 88, passed away April 4, 2012 at the Life Care Center in Sparta, Tennessee.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 P.M. on Friday, April 6 at Maplewood Cemetery in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

The family will receive friends prior to the service at Tullahoma Funeral Home from 11:30 A.M until 1:00 P. M. Rev. Charles McCaskey, D.D. will officiate the service.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Alzheimer’s research organization of your choice.

Mrs. Marbury was born September 28, 1923, to the late Rufus Garland and Mildred E. (Lyon) Thomas in Ogdensburg, NY.

She grew up and attended school in Syracuse, completing her nursing degree at Syracuse University in 1944, whereupon she entered the U. S. Army serving as a nurse during WWII. It was during her service that she met her husband to be, Robert C. Marbury, then an ensign in the U.S Navy. After the war ended they were married on June 27, 1947 and lived in Tullahoma, Tennessee, where Mrs. Marbury stayed at home to raise their four children.

A life-long Methodist, Mrs. Marbury was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Tullahoma and later St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Pulaski, TN, where she sang in the choir for many years.

She enjoyed her daily walks, reading, and was always ready and willing to help others. She often served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

In addition to her beloved husband of 64 years, Mrs. Marbury is survived by three children and their spouses, Robert T. and April Marbury of Nolensville, TN, Jean M. and Lee Webb of Cookeville, TN, and Anne M. and Rusty Evans of Louisville, KY; six grandchildren and spouses, Katherine M. and John Dirga of Atlanta, GA, Amy W. and Chris Barnhill of St. Louis, MO, Allison Webb of Cookeville, Drew Webb of Cookeville, Rob Evans of Atlanta, and Sara Evans of Louisville; and four great-grand children, Mary Grace, Graham, and Annaliese Barnhill, and Aiden Stallings.

Mrs. Marbury was preceded in death by her parents, a son, David W. Marbury, two brothers, William W. Thomas and Robert J. Thomas, and a sister, Helen T. Dodds.

She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend, and she will be greatly missed by her family and all those who knew her.

4/7/12 — Louise Peek

Louise Peek, age 77 of Winchester, passed away Tuesday April 3, 2012 at the Willows of Winchester.

A native of Scott County, Virginia she was the eldest child of the late Dana Minor and Lucille Hutchins Minor.

She was a 1952 graduate of Boones Creek High School.  In 1953 she took a position with the FBI in Washington, DC in the Fingerprint Division.  In 1953 she married Bobby Carl Peek and they made their home together in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC.  They eventually relocated to Welcome, NC and later to Jamestown, NC.  In 1977 they made their home in Brentwood, TN.  In 1991 they moved to Franklin County to enjoy their retirement near Tims Ford Lake.

Throughout her life, she was deeply involved in church work, including foreign and domestic missions, teaching Sunday School and G.A., Bible Sword Drill team, children’s nursery and as caregiver.  She was a member of the Franklin County Garden Club, Violet Club, and served as President of the Republican Women’s Club of Franklin County.  She had been a member of the Winchester First Baptist Church since 1991.

She will be remembered as a very loving and giving person and as a great admirer and impersonator of Minnie Pearl with her “Howdee, I’m so proud to be here!”.

In addition to her mother and father, she is preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Bobby Carl Peek, brother, Fred Minor.

She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Lorraine Peek Bennett (David) of Saudi Arabia, and Jill Peek of Winchester; son Richard Peek of Winter Springs, FL; grandchildren, Joshua Daniel Bennett and Joseph Carl Bennett, both of Murfreesboro and Tony Baba of Pakistan; sisters, Brenda (Danny) Dickey of Johnson City, TN, Joyce (Bob) Gant of Plano, TX, Genie Fritts and Tammy Minor, both of Kingsport, TN and Donna Minor of Gray, TN; brothers, Charles (Sheila) Minor of California, J.D. Minor of Kingsport, TN and Stanley (Peggy) Minor and Phil Minor, both of Gray, TN; numerous nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted from the chapel of Watson-North Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Saturday April 7, 2012 with Rev. Allen Rogli and Darell Williams officiating.

Interment will follow at Watson-North Memorial Park.

Active pallbearers will be Stanley Minor, Joshua Daniel Bennett, Stan McMahon, Clinton Swafford, Ron Hutchins, and David Smart; honorary pallbearers will be Danny Dickey, Charles Minor, J.D. Minor, Phil Minor and Joseph Bennett.

Visitation will be Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of service.

4/7/12 — Olivene Bailey Hoover

Olivene Bailey Hoover, of Tullahoma, passed this life on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Life Care Center of Tullahoma, at the age of 78.

Mrs. Hoover was born in Ft. Sumner, New Mexico to the late John Ed and Ola Bailey.

She worked as an Elementary Educator for the KY-TN Conference and was a member the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband, Dale Junious Hoover; one sister, Yvonne Morton; and one son-in-law, Kenneth Byron Eisele.

Mrs. Hoover is survived one daughter, DeNita Eisele of Tullahoma; one son Ron Hoover also of Tullahoma; one brother, Ralph Bailey of Keene, TX; two sisters, Geraldine Phillips of Amarillo, TX, Jonnie Beitz of Ooltewah, TN and three grandchildren, Baylie, Brynna, and Bella.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 2:00pm in the Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home Chapel in Portland, TN with burial to follow in Old Brush Cemetery also in Portland, TN.

4/6/12 — Calvin Robertson

Calvin Robertson, age 79, of Eagleville, TN formerly of  Huntland, passed away Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Centennial Medical Center.

He was born October 23, 1932 to the late James and Jessie Robertson.

He was a former employee of AMANA/GOODMAN MFG and a member of Eagleville Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Harold Robertson and sister, Mary Alice Robertson.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kay Robertson; two daughters, Pamela Williams of Naperville, IL and Sheri Miller of Unionville, TN; sister, Betsy Collins of Huntland; brother, Reese (Sue) Robertson of Belvidere; grandsons, Joshua Williams of Naperville, IL and McCade Miller of Unionville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation is 4-8 pm Thursday at Moore-Cortner Funeral Home.  Funeral services will be 11 am Friday. April 6, 2012 at Moore-Cortner Chapel with Rev. Mike Robertson officiating.

Burial will follow at Moore Memorial Cemetery in Huntland.

4/6/12 — Allene C. Roane

Mrs. Allene C. Roane  92, of Shelbyville passed Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Glen Oaks Nursing Home. 

She ws born in Bedford County, Tennessee on October 3, 1919 to the late Mr. Ode Collins and Mrs. Stella Mai Hall Claybourne.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Parks (Ruth) and Floyd (Ernestine) Collins, uncle Judge Hubert (Helen) Hall; nephew,  Hubert Gentry Hall, niece Melba Hall Mitchell.

She was retired school teacher and a former member of Bedford County Retired Teachers Association. 

She leaves to cherish her memories, devoted cousins: Jabbar Buchanan of Murfreesboro, TN, Carolyn (James) Buchanan of Shelbyville, TN, Chris (Ramona) Medearis of Eads, TN, S.L. (Robin) Mitchell of Athens, GA. 

Nieces; Brenda Hodge of Shelbyville, TN, Donna Smith of Murfreesboro, TN and Dora Carpenter of Columbia, TN, and a host of nieces, close friend, Mattie Fishback of Shelbyville, TN, other relatives and friends.

4/4/12 — Mary Elizabeth Shelton

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Shelton, age 82, of Manchester, will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Manchester Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dale Grosch officiating.

Burial will follow in the Blanton Chapel Cemetery.

Visitation with the Shelton family will be from 5:00 PM until 9:00 PM on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Shelton passed away Monday morning, April 2, 2012 at Horizon Health and Rehab in Manchester.

Mrs. Shelton was born in Coffee County, TN, the daughter of the late Charley Wesley and Eula Evelyn Stephens Vaughn.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shelton was also preceded in death by her husband, David Clifton Shelton, who passed away in 2007; one daughter, Dewanna Charlene Shelton; one sister, Ruth Naomi Sneed; and one grandchild, Jenny Lynn Shelton.

She is survived by three daughters, Treva (Lewis) Swift, Debra (Jeffery) Damron and Lisa (Keith) Shelton, all of Manchester; five grandchildren, Andrea Farless, Michelle Morris, Amy Rhea, Sonia Todd, and Maridath Broyles; and 11 great grandchildren.

4/3/12 — Kathryn Harryman

Graveside services for Mrs. Kathryn Harryman, age 93, of Manchester, will be conducted at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Franklin Memorial Gardens in Winchester with Bro. Donald Gregory officiating.

Mrs. Harryman passed away on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at United Regional Medical Center.

Mrs. Harryman was born in Park Hill, OK, the daughter of the late Frank and Lucinda Goodman Blaylock.

She was a homemaker, enjoyed sewing, gardening and crocheting and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Harryman was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Harryman.  She is survived by two sons, Thomas Charles Harryman and James Franklin Harryman, both of Manchester; three daughters, Norma Jean Baker and Margaret Lynn Bandy, both of Manchester and Sharon Ann Brown of Florence, AL; 13 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; and 8 great, great grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Mr. Mallory Michael “Mike” Roberts of Manchester, Tennessee will be held Saturday, April 7, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Taylor-Wood Funeral Home in Lewisport, Kentucky.

Visitation with the family will be Wednesday, April 4, 2012 from 5 – 9 PM at Coffee County Funeral Chapel in Manchester, Tennessee.

Mr. Roberts passed away Saturday, March 31, 2012 in Manchester, Tennessee.

Mr. Roberts was the son of the late Mallory S. Roberts and Louella Roberts of Hawesville, Kentucky.  In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Roberts.

Mr. Roberts was employed by Tenn Turf.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his long time companion, Lelia Mae Anderson of Manchester; brother, Jason Roberts and his wife Sandy of Utica, Kentucky; nieces, Christine and Hannah Roberts and nephew, Andrew Roberts, all of Utica, Kentucky; stepson, Adam Raymer of Owensboro, Kentucky and one uncle, several aunts and cousins.

Funeral services for Mrs. Juliette L. Jackson, age 61 of Manchester will be conducted Friday, April 6, 2012 at 12:00 Noon at First Missionary Baptist of Manchester with Rev. Robert McClean officiating.

Burial will follow at Cypress Gardens Cemetery in Manchester.

Mrs. Jackson passed away Friday, March 30, 012 at Manchester Healthcare.

She was born September 18, 1950 in Marion, Alabama, the daughter of the late Emmitt Carlisle Jr. and Irene Carlisle of Gadsden, Alabama. She and her husband, Vergil Jackson lived for many years in Waukegan, Illinois, moving to Manchester in 1991. She was a Certified Nursing Assistant at Manchester Healthcare and worked as a Housekeeper at the Ambassador Inn. She enjoyed spending time in the outdoors with her family and she loved to read. She was a member of First Missionary Church of Manchester.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Vergil Jackson of Manchester; two sons, Marcus A. Jackson and his wife, Cynthia of Manchester and Sidney Bustion and his wife, Shelley of Geneva, Switzerland; two daughters, Miyoshi Thomas and her husband, James of Silver Springs, Maryland and Gladys Langford and her husband, Bill of Huntsville, Alabama; two brothers, Joseph Carlisle and Emmitt Carlisle III, both of Gadsden, Alabama; two sisters, Wyteria Williams and her husband, Ralph of Manchester and Josephine Martin and her husband, Oliver of Gadsden, Alabama; two grandchildren, Karim and Zoe Bustion; three nieces, Kymberly Hardy and her husband, Gerrard of Manchester, Tarkiesha Martin of Birmingham, Alabama and Kandice Martin of Manchester; four nephews, Taurean William of Smryna, Tennessee, Micah Williams of Susanoo, Japan, Jonathan Carlisle of Enterprise, Alabama and Marice Carlisle of Gadsden, Alabama; six great nieces and nephews, Ciara, Colbi, De’ Erick, Kohlton, Armani and Joseph Jr. and two special grand dogs, “Macca” and “Ace”.
