According to Fire Chief Richard Shasteen, there was light smoke showing when the firefighters first arrived at the scene.

According to the city officials, the smoldering fire had burned long enough to weaken the ceiling joist and as firefighters entered the attic, a 24 year veteran firefighter of the department fell through the attic to the first floor injuring his shoulder and back. Fellow firefighters were able to remove him from the scene. According to the fire chief, he “was conscious at the time the Coffee County Ambulance transported him to Tennova Healthcare Harton.” He was then flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he is undergoing treatment.
The firefighters were able to bring the fire under control. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but appears to be accidental. The two occupants of the house were awaken by their pet cat and they were able to get out safely. The fire chief said that they have been relocated.
