Manchester mayor signs proclamations for water day, polio day
Manchester Mayor Lonnie Norman signed a pair of proclamations Wednesday.
First, in conjunction with the Tennessee Department of Conservation and Governor Bill Lee, Norman signed a proclamation for Manchester to recognize “Imagine a Day Without Water” day. This is a national education campaign designed to bring people together to highlight how water is essential, invaluable and in need of investment. Imagine what your day would be like if you turned on the tap and there was no water, no water to drink, make coffee with, shower, flush the toilet or wash clothes.
Secondly, Norman signed a proclamation recognizing Thursday, Oct. 24 as World Polio Day in Coffee County, asking citizens to join himself, the Manchester Rotary Club and Rotary International in the fight to officially eradicate polio, a cause that has been front and center for Rotary International for many years.

Man drowns in Hillsboro while fishing Tuesday morning, authorities say
A Tullahoma man has died after drowning near Dabs Ford Bridge in Hillsboro Tuesday (Oct. 22) morning during a fishing trip.
Deceased is Dustin Buckner, 35, of Tullahoma. According to authorities, Buckner was fishing with his sister and brother-in-law when he went into the water. Coffee County Sheriff’s Department chief investigator Billy Butler said the drowning “appears to be accidental.”
“It looks like he may have cast his line and got it tangled in a tree or something and he possibly fell in the water trying to get it untangled and then got himself tangled in his own fishing line,” explained Butler.
According to the Coffee County Sheriff’s Department, the three arrived at approximately 5 a.m. Tuesday morning to fish and authorities were dispatched to the scene at approximately 8:25 a.m.
“The sister was waiting on him to return and realize that he had not come back,” added Butler.
Coffee County Rescue Squad recovered Buckner’s body within a few minutes. Coffee County Sheriff’s Department and EMS were also on the scene. The incident happened on United States Air Force property, therefore AEDC officials were alerted and also responded to the scene, according to Butler.
Buckner’s body has been sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.
DREMC employees make donation to Unity Medical Center
Unity Medical Center received a welcome surprise last week.
Earlier in the month of October, Unity Medical Center provided 100 certificates for free mammograms to the Coffee County One Day of Hope event in an effort to promote health screening in Manchester. Taking note of Unity’s donation, Duck River Electric Membership employees in the Manchester location held a t-shirt sale to employees with each employee able to decide where proceeds from their t-shirt purchase were to go. Many DREMC employees chose to donate proceeds to Unity Medical Center to help cover the cost of the mammogram certificate donation.
Duck River presented a check to Unity Medical Center’s Ashley Melton, director of community relations for the hospital.
“This was a completely unexpected donation from employees of Duck River and we are so very grateful for their contributions to our hospital,” said Martha McCormick, CEO of Unity Medical Center. “Random acts of kindness such as this are both motivating and heart-warming. We appreciate their willingness to help keep Manchester healthy.”
Unity Medical Center offers a complete women’s health center across the street from the hospital at 482 Interstate Dr. Suite B in Manchester.
