Titans, Ravens expect slugfest Sunday in Nashville

Hear this Sunday’s game LIVE on Thunder Radio – 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM.

Ryan Tannehill headed into last year’s postseason with no playoff experience.

But the Titans quarterback quickly made up for lost time, guiding the team to two playoff wins – over the Patriots and Ravens – en route an appearance in the AFC Championship Game.

Now, Tannehill and the Titans hope they can have similar success this time around, starting on Sunday in a Wild Card playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens at Nissan Stadium.

Everyone knows what is at stake, Tannehill said on Wednesday, as the team began preparations for the game.

“You kind of know what you are getting into,” Tannehill said. “Everything ratchets up a little bit in the playoff – it’s do-or-die, and it’s win or go home. You’d like to think you lay it on the line each and every week, but there is no ‘save it for next week.’ It’s do-or-die at this point and everyone is ready to lay it on the line to do whatever it takes to win.” ..

Duncan takes job as county government consultant

Coffee County Circuit Court Clerk Heather Hinds Duncan – who is vacating her position effective Jan. 31 – has accepted a new offer from the University of Tennessee County Technical Advisory Service as a county government consultant.

Her new role includes a region of 12 counties – including Coffee County.

“I will be able to continue working to help make local governments something we can all be proud of,” Duncan said.
Duncan served over 26 years as an elected official in Coffee County. Her most recent re-election was August of 2018. She leaves office with a little less than 2 years left on her term. The Coffee County Commission will appoint a replacement to fill the seat for the remainder of Duncan’s term – which ends August of 2022.

Update on vaccine numbers in Coffee County, statewide

A total of 169,070 COVID-19 vaccinations have been reported in Tennessee as of Monday, Jan. 4.

In Coffee County, 1.85 percent of the county’s population has received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, a tiny portion of the 55,000-plus residents of the county.

Frustration over the speed of vaccine rollout and communication has been evident this week.

The department of health began vaccinating those 75 and older on Wednesday (Jan. 6) at the Coffee County fairgrounds. However, only a limited number of doses were available and those were booked by Monday of this week – although there is no clear method for booking an appointment, other than calling the Coffee County Health Department.

The health department told Thunder Radio News that there will be an appointment procedure, but details are unavailable. Vaccines will be done “drive-up” style.

In an email to the Tennessee Department of Health, state representative Rush Bricken questioned the lack of information flowing to the public.

“Citizens want a coordinated transparent effort to be able to set up an appointments based on vaccine availability,” Bricken’s email reads. “Citizens need to know what vaccine supply is available , and when new shipments are expected at the local level. This new tool doesn’t do that. I hear other states have an appointment system, why don’t we.”

The “new tool” Bricken was referring to was the Tennessee Department of Health’s online tool designed to let Tennesseans know when they are eligible to receive a vaccine.

SHELBYVILLE – Tuesday’s game was never in doubt.

The Central High School Lady Raider basketball team picked up double-digit points from four different players and smothered the Eaglettes of Shelbyville, forcing 20 turnovers in a 68-35 win.

“This team has really spoiled us,” said CHS head coach Joe Pat Cope. “We are winning 34-16 at the half and playing pretty good basketball but I’m still not feeling good about it because we weren’t up by 30. This team has really spoiled us.”

Senior Bella Vinson was dominant inside and out – working her way to the basket and also knocking down several midrange jumpers on her way to a 22 point performance.

“I’m still not shooting the ball as well as I would like to be but this was a good night for us. Everyone played well,” said Vinson.

Sophomore point guard Jalie Ruehling got hot behind the three-point line, knocking down four of them on her way to a 15 point performance. Ruehling and Vinson were named Co-players of the game by Thunder Radio.

Sophomore post Chloe Gannon picked up 11 points and Alivia Reel added 11.

“Chloe has really worked hard on getting better angles on her shots,” explained Cope.

Miranda Medley and Holly Hancock each added 3 points, Elli Chumley 2 and Emma Fulks 1 for CHS.

The win improves the Lady Raiders to 12-1 on the season and a perfect 3-0 in District 8-AAA play.

Coffee County will travel to play rival White County Friday, Jan. 8. CHS beat the Warriorettes in overtime back in November.

“This will be a great challenge for us. Their pressure is unmatched, I can’t wait,” said Vinson.

The game will be broadcast live on Thunder Radio.

Tuesday was a complete 180 for the Central High School Raider boys when compared to Saturday’s district opener.

CHS went from a team in foul trouble and struggling to find offensive rhythm in Columbia on Saturday to a team that had 10 different players score in a dominating 76-52 rout of host Shelbyville on Tuesday.

It was arguably the Raiders most complete game of the year – leading by double digits at halftime and never allowing the Eagles to sniff the lead in the second half.

Senior Jaxon Vaughn was steady and consistent for the Raiders – scoring 9 in the first half and 10 in the second to finish with 19 points.

Trenton Scrivnor came off the bench and was red hot from the field, knocking down a pair of mid-range jumpshots, a 3-pointer and capping the night by hammering down the receiving end of an alley-oop pass from Tyler Taylor. Scrivnor finished with 16 points to be named co-player of the game with Vaughn.

CJ Anthony finished with 9 points for the Raiders, Kyle Farless and Hayden Hullett each with 8, Connor Shemwell 5, Tyler Taylor 4, Phineas Rollman 3, John Dobson 3 and Aidan Abellana 2.

The Raiders were a solid 13-of-17 at the free throw line.

The win improves Coffee County to 5-4 overall and 1-1 in District 8-AAA play.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL: Coffee Middle splits with West Tullahoma

Coffee County Middle School split with visiting West Tullahoma Tuesday night in Manchester.

The Lady Raiders cruised to a 57-9 win to improve to 10-1 on the season and maintain a perfect 9-0 CTC conference record.

Meanwhile, the Raider boys lost a 7 point lead with 4 minutes to play and fell 35-31.

The loss drops the Raiders to 6-3 overall and in conference play.

Both teams will travel to Warren County Thursday night for a 6 p.m. tip.
