Appeals court to consider Tennessee abortion waiting period

A federal appeals court will listen on Wednesday to arguments over whether to uphold a 48-hour waiting period for women seeking abortions in Tennessee.

The 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reinstated the waiting period earlier this year amid a lengthy battle challenging a 2015 Tennessee law that required women to make two trips to an abortion clinic – first for mandatory counseling and then for the abortion at least 48 hours later.

A lower federal court previously struck the law down last year. The appeals court initially upheld that decision, but later agreed to reinstate the waiting period as the state’s appeal is resolved.

According to the groups Planned Parenthood and the Center for Reproductive Rights, other waiting periods have been passed in more than 25 states.

TNDH offers tips to prevent swimming deaths for children

As we progress into the summer months, it’s important to remember to always keep a watchful eye on children who enjoy swimming. The Tennessee Department of Health reports that drowning is the leading cause of injury and death for children ages one to four.

Nationwide, three children die every day as a result of drowning.

TNDH gives a few tips to prevent any situation where a child could be in danger of drowning:

-Install a four-sided fence with self-closing, self-latching gates.

-Never leave a child unattended by a pool, even just for a moment.

-Be sure children always wear life jackets around natural bodies of water.

-Know CPR and get recertified every two years.

-Be alert around any bodies of water at all times.

Shane Greene nearing return to bullpen for Atlanta Braves

Braves manager Brian Snitker isn’t ruling out the possibility of adding Shane Greene to his bullpen within the next few days.

“I think there’s always a chance,” Snitker said prior to Wednesday’s game against the Nationals at Truist Park. “We just need to get him to the ballpark.”

After making his third scoreless appearance for Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday, Greene was slated to go through his normal pregame running and throwing exercises on Wednesday. His recovery from those activities will influence when he could join Atlanta’s bullpen.

Titans make several staff updates

The Titans on Tuesday announced a number of updates to the team’s football staff.

In the personnel department, Blaise Taylor is now a pro scout and Matt Miller is now a college scout, transitioning from their previous roles as scouting assistants.

Taylor’s focus will be involved in advance scouting for upcoming opponents, as well as evaluating potential free agents for the free agency period every spring. Miller will have a region of colleges to visit, evaluate, and gather information on prospects for the annual NFL Draft. Both will retain portions of their previous roles as scouting assistants.

Also, Mical Johnson will now serve as a scouting assistant in a full-time role. Last fall, Johnson served as the Amy Adams Strunk Women in Football intern. She will work in both college and pro scouting, evaluating players, monitoring the daily waiver wire, and assisting in the preparation for free agency and the NFL Draft.

Johnson, who played women’s tennis at Belmont from 2015 to 2019, helped put the advanced reports together for the coaches during the 2020 season for the team’s weekly opponent.
