McWhorter, Costello named new co-athletic directors at Coffee County Central

Coffee County Central High School has two new athletic directors.

Longtime teachers and coaches Brad Costello and Brandon McWhorter have been named co-athletic directors for CHS. They replace Rebecca Koger.

“Coffee County Central High School is pleased to announce its new athletic administration to the community.  Brad Costello and Brandon Mcwhorter will be transitioning into the positions of Co-Athletic Director over the coming weeks,” Coffee County Principal Paul Parsley said in a statement. “Coach Costelllo is finishing his sixteenth year at CCCHS, and he will continue to teach math and coach golf, in addition to his athletic administration responsibilities.  Coach Mcwhorter is finishing his twelfth year at CCCHS, and will continue to teach math and coach softball, in addition to his athletic administration duties.  We are confident in the abilities of both Coach Costello and Coach Mcwhorter to do a wonderful job.”

Costello currently coaches golf at CHS and has done so in a previous stint. McWhorter is the head softball coach, fresh off a deep state tournament run. McWhorter has also been an assistant football coach for the Raiders.

Both Costello and McWhorter will join the Coffee Coaches Show at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 26th.

These new athletic directors replace Rebecca Koger – who submitted her resignation as AD last month, effective June 30.

BASEBALL: Raider catcher Lane Spry signs with Roane State

Lane Spry was an anchor for the Central High School Red Raider baseball team in the 2021 spring season – both offensively and defensively.

After graduating last month, Spry now has a college to call home. Spry will be continuing his academic and athletic careers at Roane State Community College in East Tennessee, where he will play baseball.

“I would like to thank God, my family and all of my coaches who helped get me to this point,” said Spry.

Spry was a constant behind the plate for the Raiders – starting at catcher all season. As a senior, he hit at a .286 clip with one home run and a .420 on-base percentage. He led the Raiders in doubles with 10 and was 4th in RBIs with 15. He sported a .989 fielding percentage – highest on the Red Raider team among starters.

BASKETBALL: Lady Raiders sweep Thursday camp games; Raider boys split early in week

Coffee County’s Lady Raider basketball team ran away with three camp games on the road Thursday – beating Brentwood 43-27, Mt. Juliet 62-22 and White House Heritage 60-18. The Lady Raiders will be back at it on Friday before returning to Manchester for camp games next week.

On Thursday, CHS flexed its post game with rising junior Chloe Gannon, who scored 18, 14 and 17 in three games.

Senior Kiya Ferrell, who has returned to the basketball court after taking last year off, worked her way into double digits with 11 points against Mt. Juliet.

Senior Elli Chumley put 13 on the board against Whitehouse and Miranda Medley buried three 3-pointers to finish with 9 points.

Raider boys go 3-3 early in week

The Raider men went 3-3 at team camp at Cleveland High School Monday and Tuesday, picking up wins over Brainard, Chattanooga Central and East Ridge.

Coffee County’s boys are at camp in Shelbyville Thursday and Friday.

Braves suffer second straight walk-off loss to Phillies

With 102 games remaining, the Braves hope to avoid the frustration they have felt over the past two months, but especially the past two days at Citizens Bank Park.

“It’s been a challenge the first couple of months,” first baseman Freddie Freeman said. “You can let it go one way, but I think we’re too good of a team to let it go that way. So I think we’re just gonna keep fighting back, keep fighting back and we’ll get going here soon.”

Freeman expressed this hope shortly after Atlanta (29-31) blew a 10th-inning lead and suffered a walk-off loss for the second straight game. The Braves’ attempt to win the three-game series evaporated as Chris Martin allowed the Phillies to construct a three-run 10th and claim a 4-3 win on Thursday afternoon.

Terri Jane Buckner

Mrs. Terri Jane Buckner, a retired school teacher
and previous owner of the Central Funeral Home partnership and life-long
resident of Manchester, TN, died in her sleep on June 10, 2021. Terri is
survived by her mother Thelma “Jane” Chambers; brother, Roger Chambers;
special niece, Raegan Chambers; special nephew, Grant Chambers; and many
other close family members. She was preceded in death by her father
“Johnny” Wayne Chambers and her husband, Finis “Randy” Buckner. Terri was
born in Manchester, TN, on December 6, 1958 to Jane Chambers and the late
Johnny Chambers. She attended and graduated from Coffee County High School
where she was a basketball cheerleader and a softball player for a
tournament team and valedictorian of her graduating class. She continued
her education at Tennessee Tech University and received her Bachelor’s and
Master’s degrees in Elementary Teaching. She started her teaching career at
Tracy City High School and Pelham Elementary, then continued on to College
Street Elementary School. Terri concluded her 35 year teaching career at
College Street where she enjoyed helping students realize their reading
potential, decorating her classroom with crazy pens, and participating in
school events. She met her late husband, Randy Buckner, at the beginning of
her teaching career and they married on August 12, 1981. Terri later
attended John A. Gupton College where she received her funeral director and
embalming licenses and graduated as Valedictorian of her class. Terri,
along with her husband Randy, established Central Funeral Home in
Manchester after her licensure. She was also a member of Red Hill Church of
Christ. Terri spent most of her time devoted to her late husband Randy
Buckner and their funeral home, however in their spare time, they enjoyed
traveling, searching for unique antiques, spending time with family, and
helping their community in any way possible. Both were avid entertainers
and inseparable together. Terri was a unique, intelligent, and interesting
woman often taking pictures yet avoiding the camera herself, doing yard
work such as mowing, and spending time with her dogs. She will be
remembered by her loved ones as a generous, loving person who loved to love
and be loved; a person with a quick wit and infectious laugh and smile. In
her last years, similar to her late husband, Terri suffered a long battle
with cancer and died peacefully in her home surrounded by family and
friends. Visitation with the family will be Saturday, June 12, 2021, from
9:00am until 12:00pm at Central Funeral Home in Manchester, TN. Funeral
services will be conducted immediately following visitation at 12 noon in
the chapel of Central Funeral Home with entombment at Rose Hill Memorial
Gardens to follow. The family of Terri Buckner wishes to extend our sincere
thanks to Hospice Compassus, Dr. VanMorris, Dr. Goodman, and other
healthcare workers and family members who made her last days most
comfortable. In the interest of the funeral home, the family asks that
donations be made to plant a Memorial Garden in memory of Terri at Central
Funeral Home for future families to enjoy. Central Funeral Home is serving

Charlotte Ann (GranGran) Shetter

Charlotte Ann (GranGran) Shetter, age 91 of Tullahoma, TN, was born on February 16, 1930, in Athens, Alabama, to the late Willard Paul Mason and Dezzie Lee (McConnell) Mason. She is preceded in death by her adoring husband of 61 years, Carl Edward Shetter and infant daughter, Penelope Gail Shetter. Her family will continue to cherish her memories: Children: Tricia Peck (Dave) Brentwood, TN; Paul Shetter, Las Vegas, NV; and Pam Shetter, Brentwood, TN. Grandchildren: Chris Peck (Dria), Carlsbad, CA; Chad Peck, Seattle, Washington; Lauren (Peck) Cannon (Shawn), Brentwood, TN: Great-Grand Children: Marley (Shelby), Micah, Masah, and Isla Peck, Carlsbad, CA; and Charlotte and Caldwell Cannon, Brentwood, TN. Great-Great-Grandchild: Otis Peck, Carlsbad, CA. Charlotte had one sibling, an older sister: Mary Glenn Hearne, Alpharetta, GA. Niece: Mary Lynn Campbell (Don), Great Niece: Lindsey Campbell, Alpharetta, GA. Special Family Friends: Nadine Myers; Todd Williams. Charlotte was a proud…very proud graduate of the University of Alabama. She never referred to the university as merely “Bama”or “Alabama,” rather “The University of Alabama.” She loved to attend UT football games and when Tennessee and Alabama played football, she would sit in the Tennessee section with her crimson shirt and proudly wave her Alabama flag. Her grandchildren were diehard Auburn fans, which produced many lively bantering episodes during the football season. Always out of respect though, “Gran Gran,” had the last word. Charlotte began her professional career as a teacher in Nashville, TN in 1951. She retired in 2005 after forty years at West Middle School in Tullahoma, TN, in the roles of Science Teacher and Guidance Counselor. Charlotte’s objective in teaching was using any creative teaching method to support each student in reaching their full potential. Charlotte was kind, always exhibiting her gentle spirit, and was loved by all who knew her. Her family meant the world to her and she looked forward to the holidays and the joy of “all being together” more than any gift. Her holiday dining table would be set with beautiful china and crystal and all the wonderful food that she spent hours preparing. She was famous for her sourdough bread, chess pie and coconut cake. She always wanted to make sure everyone had plenty to eat and would start lunch plans immediately after the last breakfast dish was washed. The Christian life was the focus of everything Charlotte did and her passion was always serving and teaching others about Jesus…and she did so with every opportunity that came her way. Charlotte taught Sunday School classes for children, teenage girls and adult women. She was still teaching Sunday School class at 90 years old and would spend hours preparing for her class. Her Christian spirit was contagious and a constant influence to her family and to all who knew her. A Soul as kind, generous, and loving as Charlotte’s is impossible to forget because it is etched into all of our hearts forever. Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 13th, 2021 at Kilgore Funeral Home from 2:00-4:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Monday, June 14th, 2021 at 11:00am in the Kilgore Funeral Home Chapel with Bill Watkins officiating. A graveside service will follow at 3:00pm at Athens City Cemetery in Athens, Alabama. Kilgore Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
