Tullahoma City Schools release statement regarding updated safety protocols

Tullahoma City Schools released a statement regarding the upcoming school year and the systems updated safety protocols.

“Ahead of the 2021-2022 school year that begins on Monday, Aug. 2, Tullahoma City Schools has updated its health and safety protocols for the start of the school year. As we move throughout this school year, TCS will review new information as it becomes available and will provide necessary updates. This is the second communication that the district is publishing regarding the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year.

Director of Schools, Dr. Catherine Stephens, noted ‘We are eager to welcome back our Tullahoma City Schools students on Monday morning, August 2nd! It is exciting to feel the energy of our teachers and staff! It is going to be a sensational school year!’

Please review the following updates:

  • In accordance with CDC guidelines face masks are recommended for indoor settings. Generally, when outdoors, individuals do not need to wear masks.
  • TCS will follow the CDC recommendation on maintaining 3 feet of physical distance when feasible. The use of outdoor spaces for learning, exercise and socialization is encouraged.
  • Visitors will be welcomed, but limited in order to reduce the possible transmission of illness, based upon school and classroom capabilities at the discretion of the school-level administration.
  • TCS will continue the practice of routinely washing hands with soap and water throughout the day. Hand sanitizer usage is acceptable when handwashing is not feasible.
  • Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting high traffic use areas, as well as the overall facilities and buses, will be continued.
  • Parents should monitor their children for any signs and symptoms of illness. Students who are sick should stay at home until they are symptom-free for 24 hours without any fever-reducing medicines.
  • Students who test positive for COVID or are exposed to COVID in their homes should contact their medical provider and the local Department of Health for instructions on when to return to school. Contact your child’s school nurse with any information regarding your student’s illness.
  • Students who are absent due to COVID or any other sickness will need a note from a medical provider or a parent note (up to five days per school year) to excuse absences.
  • If a positive case is identified, an email, an all-call message, and/or written notification to those who were possibly exposed will be sent.
  • Contact tracing will be conducted by the Tennessee Department of Health. TCS will assist the health department with information as needed. Fully vaccinated individuals will not be required to quarantine.
  • Co-curricular field trips will not occur during the first quarter of the school year. The decision to open up co-curricular field trips will be evaluated through monitoring local data, TN Department of Health and/or CDC guidelines. By the end of the first quarter, we will convey whether field trips will be allowable or not for the second quarter.
  • Extra-curricular trips will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. The TSSAA recommends athletic events to follow the local school district policies.

Please note that the above guidelines may be altered based upon local transmission rates or from updated guidelines from the CDC. Visit the Tullahoma City Schools website to read the latest guidelines.”

Braves continue maddening trend of alternating wins and losses

Charlie Morton delivered another strong start, but he didn’t receive enough support from his bolstered lineup as the Braves suffered a 2-1 loss to the Brewers on Sunday afternoon at Truist Park.

Willy Adames’ first-inning solo homer and Jackie Bradley Jr.’s RBI groundout in the fifth sunk Morton, who surrendered just three hits over six innings. The veteran right-hander’s effort wasn’t enough to prevent the Braves from setting an MLB record by alternating wins and losses over 16 consecutive games.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Atlanta had previously stood with the 1974 Phillies, 1981 Dodgers and 2010 Rockies as the only clubs to extend such a streak of 15 straight games.

Austin Riley’s RBI single in the sixth accounted for the only run charged to Brewers starter Brett Anderson over 5 2/3 innings. After surrendering Riley’s single, John Curtiss had to face Dansby Swanson, who had hit a grand slam off the Brewers’ new reliever on Saturday. But Curtiss won this latest showdown, when Swanson’s 99.8 mph liner found Bradley Jr.’s glove at the right-field warning track.

FOOTBALL: Raiders find plenty of positives from first scrimmage

The offensive line opened gaping holes, the running backs made people miss and quarterbacks didn’t make mistakes.

The Coffee County Red Raiders had plenty of positives to take away from their first scrimmage of fall camp at Lincoln County Friday night.

“[The offensive line] established themselves early,” explained CHS head coach Doug Greene, who is entering his third season at the helm of the Red Raider program. “We won the line of scrimmage from the very first drive. We were able to run counter, power, our zone plays really well. The times we got stopped, the backs didn’t follow their puller. Pass protections was really good. (Offensive line) Coach [Roger] Barlow has done a great job with them and that is part of our identity I think. “

Full comments from CHS head coach Doug Greene following Friday’s (July 30) scrimmage.

Score wasn’t an issue as the scrimmage was not played as a straight game. Each team spent a certain number of plays with the ball and only worked on the plus side of midfield. Special teams were worked to open the scrimmage but not throughout.

On offense, Konor Heaton made a habit of making defenders miss and Tristan Galey was able to gallop into the end zone a few times from short distance. Quarterback Nate Luttrell connected with Kelby Walker on a short 5-yard touchdown on the Raiders’ first possession of the night. Luttrell split reps at quarterback with freshman Cole Pippenger. Senior quarterback Connor Shemwell is still not cleared to return from a torn ACL he suffered in basketball.

Neither team turned the ball over over the course of the 60-minute timed scrimmage.

The Raiders have a few more weeks of practice before opening the season on Friday, Aug. 20 at Franklin County High School.

Michael George Collins Jr

The world has lost a charismatic, silly and innovative lover of the
outdoors.  Michael George Collins Jr, age 49, died of complications of
amyloidosis on July 26, 2021.  He lived a life full of adventure, from
taking off to survive in the woods for a few months as a young man to
starting and running a mobile grooming business for over 25 years.  In his
later years, he enjoyed mountain biking and canoeing.  Throughout his whole
life, he stayed a dedicated and loyal fan of the Ohio State Buckeyes and
Cincinnati Bengals.  But most importantly, he was a dedicated father who
loved his girls and put them above all else.

Mike was loved by many and charmed all who met him, but his family
especially had a fierce love for him.  He was preceded in death by his
grandparents, Clyde and Mary King and Robert and Iris Collins; his father,
Michael George Collins Sr and his cousins Rodney and Tracy. He is survived
by his children, Kayla and Reilly and their mother, Dawn; his girlfriend,
Suzanne; his mother, Becky and her husband, Dave; his sister, Mindy; his
aunts, Beth, Ellen, Robbie, Chris and Lois; his uncles, Ed, Bob, Tim, and
Harold; as well as cousins, Mike, Jenny and Zach, Beth, Randy, Susan,
Angela, and Brandon.

Mike’s wish was always to have a bonfire send off.  His children will hold
a future memorial to scatter his ashes on a bonfire as we remember his
infectious laughter and smiling eyes and celebrate his life.

Braves take 5-game series with Mets

After his team sealed a key series victory with a 6-3 win over the Mets on Thursday afternoon at Citi Field, Braves manager Brian Snitker had a straightforward response when asked what he hopes might happen before Friday’s 4 p.m. ET Trade Deadline.

THUNDER RADIO IS COFFEE COUNTY’S EXCLUSIVE HOME FOR ATLANTA BRAVES BASEBALL. LISTEN AT 107.9 FM, 1320 AM, 106.7 FM.

“I don’t waste time on that,” Snitker said. “If it happens, it does. If it doesn’t, we’re going to keep fighting like we have been.”

After Austin Riley’s latest homer and a strong showing from the bullpen, the Braves claimed their third win in this five-game series and exited New York four games behind the first-place Mets in the National League East.

“We had a chance to win all five,” Braves starter Drew Smyly said. “We were right there in every single game. It’s a big series for us. It was nice to get away with a win.”

The Braves have alternated a win and a loss through each of their first 14 games played since the All-Star break. Consequently, they haven’t had a .500 record since July 10, and they’re still in search of their first winning record of the season.
