TBI Releases Annual Studies On School Crime, Domestic Violence
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation released two studies last week, detailing the volume and nature of crime on school campuses and crimes identified as being domestic violence in nature. The annual studies compile crime data submitted to TBI by the state’s law enforcement agencies through the Tennessee Incident Based Reporting System (TIBRS).
Among the findings of “Domestic Violence 2016”:
· A total of 78,100 domestic violence offenses were reported in 2016, representing a 0.4% increase over 2015.
· Simple Assault accounted for 66.7% of all reported domestic violence offenses.
· Females were three times as likely to be victimized as males, and accounted for 71.5% of reported victims.
· Juveniles accounted for approximately 9.6% of reported domestic violence victims.
Among the findings of “School Crime 2014-2016”:
· Overall, the number of offenses reported as having occurred in school decreased 8.8% from 2014 to 2016.
· Simple Assault was the most frequently reported offense.
· The largest percentage of reported offenses occurred between 12:00 p.m. and 2:59 p.m.
· The month of September had the highest frequency of reported school crimes.
As with all of its crime publications, the TBI cautions against using the data provided in these reports to compare one jurisdiction to another. The factors impacting crime vary from community to community and accordingly, comparisons are considered neither fair nor accurate.
Both reports are currently available for review on the TBI’s website: www.tn.gov/tbi.
Braves Drop Doubleheader to Mets on Saturday
Left-hander Steven Matz looked sharp in his first start of the season, allowing one run in seven innings to help the New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves 8-1 and sweep a day-night doubleheader on Saturday at SunTrust Park.
Matz (1-0) allowed five hits with one walk and two strikeouts in his first appearance since Aug. 14. The oft-injured southpaw opened the season on the disabled list with left elbow inflammation. He improved to 4-0 with a 2.70 ERA in five career starts against the Braves.
The New York offense was boosted by a pair of home runs, a three-shot by Jay Bruce and a two-run pinch-hit homer by T.J. Rivera. The Mets (27-33) have homered in 14 straight road games.
Atlanta starter Matt Wisler (0-1) pitched six innings and allowed four runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
The Mets added a run in the sixth when Wilmer Flores tripled and scored on a Travis d’Arnaud sacrifice fly. Flores was 4-for-5 in the nightcap and was 6-for-9 in the doubleheader to up his average to .333.
The Braves (27-34) scored their only run in the seventh when Dansby Swanson doubled and scored on Johan Camargo’s single. The run ended a streak of 24 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings by New York starters.
The Mets made it 6-1 in the eighth inning when Rivera connected for his second homer of the season, a two-run shot, against reliever Eric O’Flaherty. It was Rivera’s first home run since May 5 against Miami.
The Mets took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when Bruce hit a three-run homer, his 16th home run of the season. It was the second time Bruce went deep against Wisler this season, earlier touching him for a three-run shot.
New York won the first game 6-1. Robert Gsellman pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings and left fielder Yoenis Cespedes hit a grand slam, the fifth of his career, in his return from the disabled list.
Gsellman (5-3) allowed only three hits, with two walks and four strikeouts. It was the first time in 11 starts this season that he has not given up a run.
Sean Newcomb, considered Atlanta’s top pitching prospect, made his major league debut. The left-hander (0-1) took the loss, despite allowing only one unearned run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings. He struck out seven and walked two.
NOTES: The Mets activated LF Yoenis Cespedes from the disabled list. He had been sidelined since April 28 because of a left hamstring strain. Cespedes said he was not 100 percent, but said “I feel that I am ready to play.” He started the first game, but not the nightcap. … New York activated LHP Steven Matz for the second game of the doubleheader and sent INF Matt Reynolds to Triple-A Las Vegas. Matz has been on the disabled list all season because of left elbow inflammation. He was 0-1 with a 6.06 ERA in four rehab appearances. … Atlanta sent RHP Jason Hursh to Triple-A Gwinnett to make room for LHP Sean Newcomb, who made his major league debut in the first game. … Atlanta CF Ender Inciarte did not start the nightcap. He had played in the team’s previous 59 games. … Atlanta C Tyler Flowers has reached base in 21 consecutive games. … New York SS Jose Reyes ended an 0-for-27 streak with a single in the fifth inning of the nightcap. … Atlanta LF Matt Kemp was ejected by home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi at the end of the eighth inning.
Sounds Even Series with Win in Memphis
The Nashville Sounds rallied behind a big two-run double from Renato Nuñez in the top of the eighth inning en route to a 6-3 win over the Memphis Redbirds at AutoZone Park Saturday night.
After trailing multiple times throughout the night, Nuñez stepped to the plate with the bases loaded in the eighth and drilled a ball off the wall to plate a pair of runs to put the Sounds (32-28) ahead for good.
The double was the second of the night for Nunez who is hitting .405 (17-for-42) over his last 12 games.
Young left-hander Dalton Sawyer was pressed into action for Nashville and made a spot start after being transferred from Single-A Beloit earlier in the day. The southpaw allowed a two-run double to Carson Kelly in the first inning but settled in nicely and delivered a quality start.
The lead wouldn’t last for the Redbirds as the Sounds drew even in the fourth. Third baseman Matt Chapman clobbered his 15th home run of the season – a two-run blast off to John Gant to make it 2-2.
Memphis came right back with a homer of their own when Luke Voit started the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to give the Redbirds a 3-2 lead.
The top home run hitting team in Minor League Baseball was not done, however. Sounds shortstop Franklin Barreto tied the game at 3-3 with a solo blast in the top of the sixth inning. Looking to break out of a slump, Barreto went 2-for-5 and had his first multi-hit game since May 26.
Sawyer faced the minimum in the sixth and left to a no-decision after allowing three runs in six frames in his first Triple-A start.
Barreto started the eighth with a single and moved to second on a passed ball. Joey Wendle walked and Mark Canha was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Nuñez. The left-fielder delivered his clutch double off the center field wall to chase Barreto and Wendle home for a 5-3 lead.
Jaff Decker added a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring on the night.
Right-hander Chris Jensen relieved Sawyer and was brilliant in three innings of relief. He picked up the win after he shut out the Redbirds on just one hit. Jensen racked up four strikeouts in his third win of the season.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday afternoon in Memphis. Right-hander Michael Brady (3-1, 3.19) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Luke Weaver (6-1, 1.84) for the Redbirds. First pitch is set for 2:05 p.m.
Ruiz’s Walk-off Single Lifts Braves over Mets
Rio Ruiz’s one-out single off Josh Edgin in the ninth inning gave the Braves a 3-2 walk-off win over the Mets on Friday night at SunTrust Park.
Dansby Swanson capped his multi-hit game with a sharp grounder to center field that resulted in a one-out, ninth-inning double when he hustled his way to second base. Swanson raced toward the plate when Ruiz directed the first pitch he saw through the shaded left side of the infield.
Starting pitchers Julio Teheran and Matt Harvey were effective, but neither pitched beyond the sixth inning. Curtis Granderson’s third-inning leadoff homer accounted for the only run surrendered by Teheran, who had totaled 97 pitches when he was lifted for a pinch-hitter with two outs in the sixth inning.
Harvey pitched around a one-out, bases-loaded threat in the second inning and scattered four hits while needing 104 pitches to complete five scoreless innings. This marked just the second time this year the Mets right-hander got through the first five innings of a start without allowing a run.
After Teheran exited, the Braves attempted to mix and match their way through the bottom of the Mets’ lineup in the seventh inning. Eric O’Flaherty won his lefty-lefty matchup against Granderson, but Travis d’Arnaud then greeted Jason Motte with a game-tying solo shot that snuck over the left-field wall.
Paul Sewald surrendered Matt Kemp’s double to begin the bottom of the sixth and then recorded two quick outs before opting to intentionally walk Danny Santana after falling behind with a 3-0 count. This set the stage for Swanson to lace a 3-2 fastball to left field for a go-ahead two-run double.
Sounds Walked-Off in Memphis
Randall Grichuk’s walk-off single to deep center field gave the Memphis Redbirds a 2-1 win over the Nashville Sounds Friday night at AutoZone Park.
Grichuk’s drive came with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the 10th inning. Sounds (31-28) reliever Simon Castro found himself in a jam after issuing a leadoff walk to Patrick Wisdom with the score even at 1-1.
A sacrifice bunt moved Wisdom to second, and a wild pitch put him 90 feet away. Castro came back to strike out Wilfredo Tovar, but then hit Todd Cunningham and intentionally walked Nick Martini to load the bases.
On a 1-2 pitch from Castro, Grichuk hit a high fly ball just past center fielder Ryan LaMarre on the warning track. Wisdom was able to trot home with the winning run to give the front-running Redbirds a five game lead over the Sounds in the American Southern Division standings.
Memphis led for much of the game after Harrison Bader gave the home team a 1-0 lead in the second inning with a solo home run.
Both starters were terrific for their respective club. Paul Blackburn allowed one run over six innings for Nashville. He walked three and struck out five in a no-decision.
Mike Mayers shut out the Sounds over six innings. He walked one and struck out six but had to settle for a no-decision after the Memphis bullpen coughed up the lead in the eighth inning.
With one out in the top of the eighth, Memphis turned to lefty reliever Ryan Sheriff to face left-handed hitters Joey Wendle and Matt Olson. Sheriff retired Wendle, but Olson drilled a game-tying solo homer to make it a 1-1 game. The blast for Olson was his 15th of the season.
It remained 1-1 as Sounds reliever Jake Sanchez tossed two scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth innings.
Matt Chapman extended his hitting streak to eight games, and Matt McBride extended his to five games.
Game two of the three-game series between Nashville and Memphis is scheduled for Saturday night at AutoZone Park. Right-hander Daniel Gossett (3-3, 3.41) starts for the Sounds against right-hander John Gant (0-1, 2.19) for the Redbirds. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
