ACCUPLACER Assessment Test to be given at Motlow

Motlow State Community College is offering the ACCUPLACER assessment test at all Motlow campuses multiple times through the 2017 calendar year. The ACCUPLACER assessment test replaced the COMPASS test. Students planning to enroll at Motlow for the fall semester who need to take the ACCUPLACER, which is used to assess a student’s readiness for college-level work, should do so as soon as possible.
Before taking the test, students must have the following on file in Motlow’s admissions office: a completed admission application, official high school and/or college transcripts, and if related, official test scores. Special test accommodations are available for students who require other than standard conditions for taking the test.
The ACCUPLACER test is a computer testing system that helps determine students’ academic readiness in reading, sentence skills and mathematics for college level work. Test results determine which courses are best suited to the student’s level of readiness.
The first initial test is provided free of charge. Students who take the ACCUPLACER test and feel their test results have placed them incorrectly, may challenge their initial placement score and retake the test or portions of the test. The college charges a $10 challenge fee for each portion of the test or $20 to challenge the entire test.
Students who are 21 years of age or older must take all three portions (reading, sentence skills and math) unless they have valid ACT scores on file or collegiate credit from an accredited college or university.
For the next available test dates and registration, please visit the Motlow State testing website (www.mscc.edu/testing) or call 931-393-1763 or 1-800-654-4877 ext. 1763.

Lady Raider Basketball Opens Team Camp with Perfect Record on Monday

The Lady Raider basketball team opened up play in the Lebanon team camp on Monday.  Defense was the theme of the day for Joe Pat Cope’s Coffee County squad in a pair of victories.  The varsity Lady Raiders got a pair of double digit wins over Watertown and Forrest while the JV team lost a close game to Watertown.

The stifling full court press of Coffee County resulted in the Lady Raiders jumping out to a 17 to 1 lead over Watertown in the day’s first game.  Coffee County built a 24 to 4 lead before Coach Cope used everyone on his bench in a 40 to 22 win.  Against Forrest, the Lady Raiders captured a 40 to 30 win behind another strong defensive effort.

Bella Vinson led the Lady Raiders in scoring in both games while Jenna Garretson returned from injury to notch a double/double.  Coach Cope singled out Ellie Graham for her stellar work at the point all day long, especially against a strong press from Forrest.  On Tuesday, Coffee County will take on Gallatin at 1 PM and Portland at 3 PM with both games being held at Lebanon High School.

Red Raiders Open Play in MTSU Team Camp on Monday

The Red Raider basketball teams opened play in a 4 day team camp at MTSU on Monday.  The varsity, JV and freshmen each played 3 games on the day.  The varsity team and the freshman went 2 and 1 on the day, while the JV team was 1 and 2.

The varsity Red Raiders opened up with a win over Heritage Christian as Coach Micah Williams saw improved play on the offensive end from his Raiders.  “We took good shots, moved the ball well and were more patient than last week”, said Williams. In the 2nd game, the Raiders were tied with Cleveland at 31 at halftime before a rash of 3rd quarter turnovers cost them the game.  Coffee County closed out the day with a win over Tupelo, MS.

Coach Williams was once again pleased with his team’s defensive effort.  Offensively, “we eliminated a lot of the scoring droughts we saw last week but need to do a better job of taking care of the basketball” added Williams.  Williams singled out the play of Russell Smythia, Chase Simpkins and Harley Hinshaw for their contributions off the bench as he continues to develop depth for his team.

On Tuesday, the varsity team will open up play at 10 AM with a game on the main floor at MTSU.  They will follow that up with games at 2 PM and 6 PM at the MTSU Rec Center.  The JV will open up with a 9 AM game at the Alumni Memorial Gym followed by games at 2 PM and 5 PM at MTSU’s Rec center.  The freshmen will open play at noon the Alumni Memorial Gym with games set for 2 PM and 3 PM at MTSU’s Rec center.

Braves’ 5th HR Stuns Nats Late in Slugfest

Tyler Flowers smacked a go-ahead three-run home run off Matt Albers in the ninth inning to power the Braves to an 11-10 win over the Nationals on Monday night at Nationals Park.
It was Flowers’ fourth home run of the season, and the Braves’ fifth blast of the night. The Nationals entered the eighth inning with a 9-6 advantage, but for the third straight day, Washington’s bullpen surrendered the lead. The Braves scored twice in the eighth before taking command in the ninth.
The game was meant to be a pitching duel between two pitchers who entered on a string of quality starts, but it turned into a slugfest with a combined eight home runs and 28 hits. Stephen Strasburg gave up six runs and three home runs in five innings, while the Nationals took advantage of defensive miscues in the fourth to take a three-run lead.
But in the ninth, as Flowers rounded the bases, the Braves’ players jumped around the dugout, while some came out to greet Flowers with high-fives. Meanwhile, the Nationals players sat with straight faces in the dugout. The Nationals added a run in the ninth, but Jim Johnson secured his 13th save of the season for Atlanta.
Flowers’ blast was one of the shortest of the eight in the game, but it was the most important. Albers walked two in the ninth and struck out one before Flowers, who had been 0-for-4, came to the plate. He worked a 2-0 count before smacking a four-seam fastball over the right-field wall. The catcher’s 349-foot shot had an exit velocity of 98.1 mph and a launch angle of 35 degrees, per Statcast™.
Johnson gave up a two-out single to Trea Turner in the bottom of the ninth, which scored Michael Taylor. But with Bryce Harper at the plate and the potential tying run on first, Johnson got Harper to line out to center field, recording the save.
