Season Preview – Westwood Girls’ Soccer

As the fall sports season gets ready to crank up, Thunder Radio sports continues our series of previews for the fall prep sports teams.  Each day, we will spotlight a different team as we count down to the opening of practices and games of the upcoming season.  Today, we look at the Westwood girls’ soccer team.

The Lady Rockets will attempt to repeat their regular season conference title when they begin summer workouts with a team camp on July 24th thru July 26th.  Coach Donna Burdine will look to get her young squad off to a strong start as they will work out in the camp led by CHS head coach David Amado and members of the Lady Raiders team.

The number one task facing Burdine and her Lady Rockets is the replacement of most of her offensive weapons from last year.  The graduation of Lady Rocket goal scorers to the high school squad has Westwood at a disadvantage going into the 2017 season.

The depth of Coach Burdine’s team comes from her defense as she returns her goal keeper from last year in Alanna Coker.  Westwood will build their success from the “bottom up” as they should be strongest in the back end.  Coker is one of the 8th graders that is expected to lead the Lady Rockets this season.  She will be aided by returning defender Lauren Perry, midfielder/forward Diana Ramirez and striker Luz Basurto.   Also expected to provide leadership is 7th grade returning starter Anna Johnson.

Coach Burdine was excited about her younger players including the speed and athleticism shown by members of the upcoming 6th grade class.  She emphasized that they would be a healthy competition for starting positions when preseason practices get underway.

The Lady Rockets will begin their season on August 25th when they host Cascade at Dyer-Bouldin Field.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast of that match as part of the First National Bank Hometown Sports Series.  The opening kick is set for 5:30 PM.

Lady Raider Volleyball Returns from Cumberland Team Camp

“We got up at 7 AM, went to bed at 9 PM and spent the rest of the day on volleyball” is how CHS volleyball coach Andrew Taylor described a busy 3 days of camp at Cumberland University.  The Lady Raiders traveled to Lebanon for the Thursday through Saturday camp last week winding down a busy first week of action.

The camp featured drills, instruction, controlled scrimmages, situational play, team bonding activities, recruiting sessions and even nutrition sessions.  Returning only 2 starters, Coffee County was looking to get an opportunity to develop some team chemistry and find the best possible rotation.  The camp concluded on Saturday with traditional scrimmage games as the Lady Raiders finished the day with a record of 1 and 2.  “We got a lot of positional work and got closer as a team” said Taylor.

Coffee County will travel to Eagleville on Wednesday to begin a team camp that runs through Friday.  Coach Taylor is looking to get a lot more game action for his young Lady Raiders.  Coffee County will return home to host a varsity play day on Wednesday, July 26th.   The Lady Raiders conclude preseason play with a varsity/JV scrimmage play day at Stewarts Creek on August 5th.

The Lady Raiders open the season on August 14th at home when they play host to Middle Tennessee Christian School. That match is scheduled for 6 PM. The Lady Raiders will be featured this fall on the First National Bank Home Town Sports Series. Thunder Radio’s first CHS volleyball broadcast is set for August 15th when they play host to Shelbyville at the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym.

Coach Taylor will also be a guest on the July 22nd edition of the Coffee Coaches Show to talk about the upcoming season. The Coffee Coaches Show is heard each Saturday at 10 AM here on Thunder Radio as it is broadcast live from the showroom of Al White Ford/Lincoln.

Grundy County Sheriff’s Deputy Fired after being charged with Domestic Assault

Alan LaLonde

A now-former Grundy County Sheriff’s deputy has been arrested on charges of domestic assault.
Sheriff Clint Shrum says that Alan LaLonde was arrested the evening of July 12, after an incident at a woman’s home.
The alleged assault was witnessed by a second person.
LaLonde was released on bond, with a GPS monitor.
“I am extremely disappointed in the actions of our team member that has resulted in his termination from this office. An incident of this nature is unacceptable to me and only serves to tarnish and disdain the hard work done by the other members of this agency. Domestic violence is a serious allegation and will be taken as such by this agency,” Shrum said in a news release.
LaLonde has been relieved of his duty for conduct below the standards of the office and conduct unbecoming.

Report Claims Rollback of Internet Rules Based on False Info

The FCC is accepting public comments through Monday on its plan to revoke net-neutrality protections. (transCam/Flickr)

As the Federal Communications Commission takes steps to reverse net neutrality, a term for a free and open internet, researchers say a key assumption for the move does not hold water.
In his argument to revisit the Obama-era rule, current FCC chairman Ajit Pai cited a paper published in an academic journal that claimed the agency had failed to consider the economic impacts on industry. Muhlenberg College assistant professor Jefferson Pooley, co-author of a new study published in the same International Journal for Communication, said Pai’s position is based on a paper riddled with factual errors and unsubstantiated claims.
“We showed that this core claim was incorrect,” he said, “that in fact, economists had been perhaps more active in coming up with the net-neutrality rules than ever before.”
Pooley’s team also found that the article cited by Pai was paid for by CALinnovates, a public-relations group that specializes in promoting policy for AT&T, an internet service provider that Pooley said could benefit if open-internet rules are reversed. Proponents of rolling back net neutrality have said regulating internet service providers as a utility hampers innovation and investment.
Pooley said he believes the failure to disclose industry funding amounts to “information laundering,” making it possible for the FCC director to cite an academic publication without any trace of AT&T’s fingerprints. He said it’s important for the public, and public officials, to know whose interests are behind research.
“We would probably dismiss a claim that AT&T made directly against net neutrality, since they stand to gain financially,” he said. “So instead of making the argument directly, they funded academics who published an article in an academic journal.”
U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., who chairs the House Energy and Commerce Committee’s Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, has spoken out in support of rolling back federal regulations.
The CALinnovates article is online here, and Pooley’s research is here.
