CHS Lady Raiders Win Soccer Friendly with Nolensville
It was not easy on Tuesday night, but the Coffee County CHS soccer team held off a second half rally to grab a 6 to 5 scrimmage win over Nolensville. After racing out to a 5 to 0 lead midway of second half, the Lady Raiders saw Nolensville rally for 4 goals in a 6 minute stretch to make the final 10 minutes a tense affair. Nolensville had a chance to tie the game on a free kick as the final seconds ticked off the clock. That potential game tying goal sailed high over the crossbar to end a hectic second half.
The Lady Raiders scored first in the 1st minute as Reyna Flores banged home a goal before many in the crowd had found their seats. Jessica Barrera added the assist. Jenna Garretson scored in the 8th minute unassisted off a set piece play. Flores added Coffee County’s 3rd goal off another assist from Barrera to give Coffee County a 3 to 0 halftime lead.
The Lady Raiders extended their lead to 4 to 0 on another unassisted goal from Garretson in the 48th minute before an unassisted goal from Allie Amado in the 53rd minute made it 5 to 0. At that point, Coffee County made some substitutions and Nolensville began to find their rhythm. The visiting Lady Knights used several Lady Raider defensive lapses to bang home goals in the 60th, 62nd, 64th and 66th minutes. Barrera added a goal in the 71st minute that proved to be the game winner off an assist from Amado. Nolensville added a goal in the 78th minute and drew a foul just outside the box in the 80th minute. A hurried free kick by the Lady Knights sailed high just ahead of the final horn.
Coffee County will be back at home on Thursday when they play host to Ooltewah. That match is set to get underway at 6 PM.
CCMS Soccer Falls in Tuesday Scrimmage
After holding Siegel scoreless for 25 minutes, the Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider soccer team saw the Lady Stars notch 2 goals in the final minutes of the first half. The Stars carried that momentum into the second half as they banged home 4 goals in the final 30 minute half on their way to a 6 to 0 scrimmage win.
The Lady Raiders were held to 7 shots on the night against the talented Siegel team. Coffee County struggled to maintain possession and effectively mount an offensive attack as Siegel was able to put up 21 shots. Lady Raider keeper Lucy Riddle played well as she made 10 saves on the night. Marley Perry led the Lady Raiders in shots with 4.
The Lady Raiders will host their annual Kickin Cancer Scrimmage PlayDay on Saturday at CCMS. Games will begin at 9 AM as 7 teams from 6 different counties will be in action in the daylong event.

Herrera’s 2-Run HR Helps Eflin, Phillies Top Braves 5-2
Odubel Herrera hit a two-run homer, Zach Eflin pitched seven strong innings following his recall from the minors, and the Philadelphia Phillies beat Atlanta 5-2 on Tuesday night to continue their season-long mastery of the Braves.
After Maikel Franco drove in Freddie Galvis with a line-drive single to right field in the fifth inning, Herrera reached down to pull a low pitch from Julio Teheran into the restaurant behind the right-field wall. Herrera had three hits, including a double.
Freddie Freeman hit a first-inning homer off Eflin, the right-hander who was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before the game and earned his first win of the season. Eflin (1-3) allowed two runs, seven hits and one walk.
The Phillies have won 10 of 12 against Atlanta this season. They swept a four-game series against the Braves in Philadelphia on July 28-31.
Hector Neris pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in 15 chances.
Teheran (7-10) allowed five runs, seven hits and three walks in five innings. He has allowed a career-high 28 homers, the most in the National League.
Teheran fell to 1-8 in 12 home starts at new SunTrust Park. He is 6-2 on the road.
Nick Williams had a run-scoring double and scored on Eflin’s bloop single up the middle in the fourth.
Ender Inciarte’s first-inning single extended his hitting streak to 13 games.
Braves rookie shortstop Johan Camargo was hurt before the game began. He suffered a hyperextended right knee while jogging onto the field. His knee appeared to lock near the first base line as he reached down to touch the dirt or chalk.
Camargo was supported by assistant trainer Jim Lovell and third base coach Ron Washington as he returned to the dugout. An MRI was scheduled for later Tuesday night.
Jace Peterson replaced Camargo in the lineup.
Left-hander Max Fried threw two scoreless innings in his major league debut for the Braves.
Rookie LHP Sean Newcomb (1-6, 4.61), who is 0-4 in his last six starts, will make his second start against the Phillies on Wednesday. He allowed only two hits and one run in five innings and did not receive a decision in the Braves’ 4-3 loss at Philadelphia on July 29. First pitch is set for 6:35 CT and can be heard here on Thunder Radio.
Sounds Topple Tacoma in Tuesday Matinee
For the second straight day nine innings were not enough to decide a winner between the Nashville Sounds and Tacoma Rainiers. Tuesday, however, it was the Sounds who came out victorious with a 6-3 win.
A three-run top of the 10th inning helped the Sounds escape Tuesday’s matinee in Tacoma 6-3 over the Rainiers. Joey Wendle’s 99th career double for the Sounds put them in front 4-3. The Sounds then tacked on two more runs on a Kenny Wilson single to give Raul Alcantara some breathing room.
Tacoma’s Taylor Motter proved to be a tough out in the late stages of the ball game for the second straight game. With a runner on first and nobody out in the eighth inning Motter cranked a 3-1 Felix Doubront fastball just beyond the left field fence for a go-ahead home run. That, after Motter’s ninth inning, game-tying home run Monday night.
The Sounds responded in the top of the ninth. Nashville loaded the bases with nobody out for Wilson who worked a walk to tie the game but that was all the Sounds could muster in the frame. Boog Powell grounded into a 3-2 force out, Franklin Barreto struck out, and Jaff Decker flied out to end the threat.
Wendle opened the scoring in the second inning as he yanked a 1-1 pitch down the right field line that cleared the fence for his seventh home run of the season. The lead was short-lived as the Rainiers tallied a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Danny Muno reached on a slow-roller to third base and came around to score on a ground out to first base by Zack Shank. The Rainiers were aided by a Michael Brady balk that allowed Dario Pizzano and Muno to advance to second and third respectively.
Nashville regained the lead in the sixth inning. Barreto continued his hot-hitting since rejoining the Sounds from Oakland as he laced a run-scoring double down the right field line to plate Boog Powell. The Sounds were unable to extend the lead, however. After reaching third base on a Jaff Decker single, Barreto broke on contact as Renato Nuñez hit a sharp ground ball to short and was gunned down at the plate.
Brady pitched effectively for the Sounds as he surrendered just one run on five hits in his five innings of work en route to his fourth win of the season while his ERA dropped to 3.21. The right-hander did not issue any free passes while collecting four punch outs. In his third outing with the Sounds, Logan Bawcom kept the score at 2-1 with a pair of scoreless innings of relief.
Raul Alcantara earned his first win of the season for Nashville with two innings of scoreless baseball while yielding just one base hit.
Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for Wednesday night at Cheney Stadium. Right-hander Frankie Montas (0-1, 4.62) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Sam Gaviglio (3-5, 3.79) for the Rainiers. First pitch is scheduled for 9:05 p.m. CST.

The search is over for a wanted man. The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department had been assisting other area law enforcement officers looking for Jon Canada Lovvorn. The 41-year-old was wanted for auto theft.
Lovvorn eluded police in Shelbyville last Thursday, but was captured on Saturday night in Murfreesboro.
The wanted man was spotted on U.S. 231 South by Rutherford County deputies headed toward Shelbyville, but then turned around and headed back toward Murfreesboro.
Lovvorn reached Interstate 24-South Church Street intersection, with one wheel down to the rim. Lovvorn was stopped on Interstate 840 by a Rutherford County deputy and arrested.
Gas Prices continue Upward Trend
Gas prices are mostly climbing around the country. After rising 6 cents in the past week, Tennessee gas prices averaged $2.14 on Sunday.
Last month, Tennessee gas prices averaged $2.03 per gallon. Nationwide, gas prices averaged $2.27-six cents more than July of 2016.
AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said motorists are finding gas prices that are about 25 cents more than this time last year. Steady declines in crude supplies have pushed oil prices about $10 per barrel higher than last year, making it more expensive to produce gasoline.
The national average price of gasoline Sunday was $2.34, 10 cents higher than a month ago and 22 cents higher than a year ago.
The low price in Manchester as of Tuesday afternoon was $2.01 and in Tullahoma the low price per gallon is $2.13.
New State Law might end disputes between 911 Districts and Phone Companies
Tennessee officials hope a new state law will end legal disputes between emergency communications districts and telecommunications companies over 911 fee collections.
The Chattanooga Times Free Press reported Monday that the law puts the Tennessee Department of Revenue in charge of ensuring companies like AT&T and others collect and turn over state-mandated surcharges on landline and cellphone bills. The fees go to county 911 centers.
Previously, telecommunications companies turned over collection reports and payments on many of their charges to the Tennessee Emergency Communications Board.
Tennessee 911 districts also alleged in lawsuits that sometimes companies don’t charge fees on the lines they should or don’t remit them all to the government.
