Twenty one service errors and 15 hitting errors spoiled the Lady Raiders upset bid. Tyana Fenton led Coffee County in aces with 5 and digs with 19. CCMS Volleyball Falls to White County
After keeping each set close, the Coffee County Middle School volleyball team saw White County pull away late in each set to capture a 2 set win on Monday. In a match that the Lady Raiders led in each set, it was the experience and communication of White County which proved to be the deciding factor down the stretch in each set. White County won by set scores of 25 – 21 and 25 – 17.
Unforced errors at the net proved costly for the Lady Raiders in the first set as White County was able to rally for the win. Five service errors in the second set kept the Lady Raiders from closing the gap late in the second set to set up a deciding 3rd set. Unofficially, Kiya Ferrell led Coffee County in kills with 6. Lauren Brandt and Hannah Richardson each had a pair of kills. Brandt led the Lady Raiders in assists with 3 while Kylie Millaway added a pair of assists. Millaway and Ferrell tied for the team lead in service aces with 3 while Brandt added an ace.
The Lady Raiders are back in action on Thursday, September 7th when they play host to North Franklin. The varsity match gets underway at 5 PM.
Braves Struggle vs. Phillies’ Nola in Opener Loss
Rhys Hoskins can’t be stopped.
While the rookie sensation didn’t extend his home run streak to six games, Hoskins went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, as the Phillies took the series opener from the Braves, 6-1, on Monday night at Citizens Bank Park. Hoskins ripped a first-pitch fastball from Braves starter Lucas Sims in the sixth inning to drive in the go-ahead run, which kept the Phillies in front for good. Hoskins’ 25 RBIs are the second most in baseball history through a player’s first 19 big league games. Mandy Brooks had 28 in 1925.
Sims, making his sixth career start, threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed four runs — three of which came in the sixth and seventh innings — as the Braves fell to 2-12 this season against the Phillies.
After a pair of starts that saw him allow a combined 12 runs, Aaron Nola held the Braves in check over seven strong innings. The Phillies’ right-hander allowed one run on five hits without a walk and struck out six. Brandon Phillips, who has 1,999 career hits after going 2-for-4, drove in the Braves’ only run with a single in the sixth inning.
The Phillies added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning through a bases-loaded walk to Cameron Rupp, who hit a solo homer off Sims in the seventh, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Daniel Nava.
After Phillips’ two-out single tied the game at 1 in the sixth, Freddie Freeman hit a line drive to right field, where Nick Williams made a diving catch to end the inning and Atlanta’s threat. The ball had a catch probability of 44 percent, making it a four-star catch according to Statcast™. The rookie outfielder ran 38 feet in 3.1 seconds to make his first catch of at least four stars this season.
Sims held the Phillies in check through the first two innings, but Pedro Florimon led off the third with a triple to right-center field. After Rupp grounded out, Nola stepped into the box 1-for-36 this season and laced a 98-mph grounder up the middle to score Florimon and give the Phillies a 1-0 lead.
Storm Chasers Outlast Sounds in Extras
The Omaha Storm Chasers scored a run in the 13th inning to edge the Nashville Sounds, 3-2, at First Tennessee Park Monday night.
The four-hour, 14-minute marathon came to an end when the Storm Chasers put together a rally after both teams were held off the scoreboard since the sixth inning.
With Nashville’s Patrick Schuster on the mound, Cam Gallagher singled to right-center to start it. Hunter Dozier doubled to the gap in right-center to put runners at second and third for Billy Burns who put Omaha on top with a run-scoring groundout.
Omaha’s Jake Newberry set the Sounds down in order in the bottom of the 13th to seal the series-opening win for the Storm Chasers.
Both starters were effective as Nashville’s Josh Smith tossed five shutout innings in a spot start, and Omaha’s Jace Vines limited the Sounds to two runs over six innings in his the first Triple-A start of his career.
Smith made a few big pitches to get out of a couple of jams throughout the night. With a pair of runners on in the first, he got Jorge Soler to bounce into an inning-ending 5-4-3 double play.
With two on in the fifth, Ramon Torres hit a line drive that looked ticketed for the right field corner. Sounds right fielder Yairo Munoz raced towards the line and made a diving catch to take extra bases away from Torres. Smith stranded the two runners by striking out Raul Mondesi to end the inning.
The Sounds started the scoring in the second when Joey Wendle led off the inning with a sharp single to right field. After Chris Carter was retired, Munoz drilled a ball off the right field wall for a run-scoring triple to make it 1-0.
Munoz was at it again in the fourth when he knocked in his second run of the game. Renato Nunez started the inning with a double down the right field line and came around to score on a base hit up the middle by Munoz.
Omaha evened the game in the sixth when Jorge Soler launched a two-run homer off reliever Chris Bassitt. That was the last of the scoring until the 13th inning when Omaha staged the game-winning rally.
Nashville’s Raul Alcantara, Lou Trivino, and Sam Moll combined for five shutout innings in relief.
Game two of the four-game series is scheduled for Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Daniel Mengden (2-3, 3.73) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Christian Binford (5-10, 7.78) for the Storm Chasers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
