Raiders Fall to #1 Oakland

The Red Raider football team hit the road on Friday night to take on the #1 team in the state, Oakland.  The Patriots, 5 and 0 on the year with wins over Maryville and Blackman, hosted Coffee County for homecoming.  The Patriots forced 5 first half turnovers to build a 41 to 0 halftime lead.  Coffee County fell by a final score of 41 to 9.

The Red Raiders were able to move the ball in the first half, accumulating over 100 yards in the opening 2 quarters.  But 2 fumbles and 3 interceptions killed any and all Coffee County momentum.  The Raiders finally got on the scoreboard in the 4th quarter when Tyler Walker hit a 33 yard field goal.  The field goal was the first of his career and earned him the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game award.  Alontae Taylor added a touchdown run in the last 2 minutes for Coffee County.

Taylor finished the night with 119 yards rushing on 15 carries,  Deaaron Rozier and Cameron West each finished with 21 yards on the ground.

Coffee County returns home on Friday night for a non-region game with Lebanon.  That game will be Manchester Youth Football League Appreciation Night as football players and cheerleaders who come in their uniforms will be admitted for free to the game.  Kick-off is set for 7 PM at Carden-Jarrell Field.

The Division 1 Raiders started off with a loss of 0-26. Though, they didn’t win, their offense had the ball the majority of the game. #15 Jacoba Fells led the offense with 52 yards rushing. #00 Gavin Smith also assisted with some carries.

In Div. 2, like the first game, the highlights came from offense. #5 Gabriel Hambly led the team with 75 yards rushing, #9 Zander Gomes and #7 Tyler Martin also had some carries. The Pioneers defeated the Raiders 0-20.

Johnathan Akers led his Raiders with 11 tackles, while the entire defense was also swarming to the ball. At the end of the first half the Raiders were down 6-9. They knew they still had a chance of winning. When they started the second half they fought their hearts to come from behind and defeat the Pioneers. The Raiders won their first game of the season with a score of 20-16. The crowd grew wild and the whole city knew that they won.

Next weekend the Raiders are traveling to Fayetteville to go up against the Tigers. Come out and support our 2017 Red Raiders.

Titans Lose Game, QB Marcus Mariota in Houston

The Titans had a problem in Houston.

Actually, they had several.

Offensively, the team got off to another slow start, and ended up turning the ball over five times in the game. On defense, the Titans couldn’t get stops, as the secondary had all kinds of trouble in coverage. To make matters worse, Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a hamstring injury, and didn’t finish the game.

It all added up to an ugly 57-14 loss to the Houston Texans here at NRG Stadium.

“That was a total team loss, all the way around, including coaching,” Titans coach Mike Mularkey said. “They obviously played a better football game than we did, in all three phases, and include coaching on that. … A tough lesson learned for us.”

Mariota completed 6-of-10 passes for 96 yards in the first half, and he scored on touchdown runs of two and 34 yards in the game. But back-up Matt Cassel took over for Mariota in the third quarter, and played the rest of the way. Mularkey said Mariota is scheduled for an MRI, which would reveal the extent of the injury.

It was ugly early, as the Titans fell behind out of the gate, and things never really got better.

“Disgusting,” Titans tight end Delanie Walker said. “This loss doesn’t define us – today, Houston was just better than us. But guys should be upset, and I sure everybody in here is upset.”

On defense, the Titans struggled in coverage, as Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson completed 25-of-34 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns, along with an interception. Watson also ran for a touchdown.

The Texans racked up 445 yards of offense against the Titans, and 33 first downs.

“We are professionals, and we didn’t play professional football today,” cornerback Logan Ryan said. “We have to learn from the mistakes, burn the film, and go out there and do better next week. … We have some leaders on this team, some great players on this team, and we don’t like the taste of this.

“We are not the first team to lose by a lot of points in this league. It’s one loss, and we have to respond and play our style of football.”

The Titans struggled early and late.

After a Mariota interception on the team’s third offensive play, the Texans quickly drove down the field and scored on a two-yard touchdown run by running back Lamar Miller.

The Texans made it 14-0 when Watson connected with receiver DeAndre Hopkins on an eight-yard pass. The Texans increased the lead to 21-0 on a 16-yard touchdown pass from Watson to receiver Will Fuller.

The Titans, meanwhile, couldn’t get anything going on offense until a drive at the start of the second quarter.

That’s when Mariota capped off a 5-play, 75-yard drive with a 34-yard touchdown run, making it 21-7 with 11:44 remaining in the second quarter.

After the Texans stretched the lead to 24-7 on a 50-yard field goal by kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, Mariota connected with receiver Rishard Matthewsfor completions of 13 and 28 yards on a scoring drive that was capped off with a two-yard touchdown run by Mariota to cut the lead to 24-14 with 1:50 remaining before halftime.

But Marota injured his hamstring on that play, and the Titans couldn’t slow down the Texans. A pass interference by cornerback Adoree’ Jackson in the end zone gave Houston the ball at the 1, and Watson ran it in to make it 30-14. Titans safety Kevin Byard picked off Watson near the goal line just before halftime, but it was one of the few plays the Titans made on defense on this day.

The Texans kept rolling in the second half. Watson’s third touchdown pass of the game – a 10-yard pass to Fuller – capped off a 14-play, 75-yard drive, and a Watson-to-Miller touchdown pass in the fourth quarter made it 44-14 with 11:19 left. Another Fairbairn field goal made it 47-14 with 8:39 left.

Cassel completed 4-of-10 passes for 21 yards in the second half, with two interceptions, one that was returned for a touchdown by linebacker Dylan Cole. Another Fairbairn field goal accounted for the final margin.

“I would have loved to go out there and started a comeback, but today obviously it didn’t go well,” Cassel said. “It was a bad day at the office. I have to play better obviously. I have been doing this for a long time and this was one of those things where things went downhill pretty quickly.”

The Titans face the Dolphins next Sunday in Miami.

The Titans are now 2-2 in the AFC South, tied atop the division with the Texans and Jaguars. The Colts (1-2) face the Seahawks later tonight.

“We’re a good team,” Mularkey said. “We can compete, and I’ll say this about or team – (effort) was not a question today. We competed four quarters, and they were the better team today.”

Braves Deny Stanton, Use Their Own HRs to Win

History was put on hold in Giancarlo Stanton’s quest to reach 60 home runs on Sunday. Instead, it was a three-run homer by pinch-hitter Adonis Garcia and Kurt Suzuki’s two-run home run that helped propel the Braves to an 8-5 victory over the Marlins in the season finale at Marlins Park.

The main spotlight was on Stanton, who started in the leadoff spot for the first time in his career to guarantee as many at-bats as possible to assist his chances to hit his 60th home run. But Stanton ended up going 2-for-5 with an RBI single. His single in the third inning was clocked at 122.2 mph, which is the hardest base hit recorded since Statcast™ launched in 2015.
Stanton had one final chance in the ninth inning, facing closer Arodys Vizcaino. The slugger was greeted to a standing ovation and chants of “MVP!” But he struck out on four pitches, swinging through an 86.4-mph slider. On his way back to the dugout, the fans cheered loudly, and Stanton raised his right fist and put it over his heart in his curtain call.
The Marlins’ All-Star right fielder did not become the sixth player in MLB history to have at least 60 home runs, but he enhanced his National League MVP chances by finishing with the Major League lead in home runs (59) and RBIs (132).
Atlanta avoided a four-game sweep by rallying to victory in the season finale, which also marked the final game of Jeffrey Loria’s ownership in Miami. The group, headed by Bruce Sherman and Derek Jeter, is expected to officially be announced early next week.
Dansby Swanson hit a go-ahead RBI single off Junichi Tazawa with two outs in the seventh inning, and Garcia blasted a three-run homer off lefty Justin Nicolino.
Marlins All-Star outfielder Marcell Ozuna belted a solo home run in the seventh inning, his 37th of the season. Ozuna finished with 123 RBIs. Stanton and Ozuna are the first teammates to finish among the Major League’s top three RBI leaders since 2005, when David Ortiz and Manny Ramirez did so with the Red Sox.
The Braves jumped in front in the third inning on Suzuki’s two-run homer, his 19th of the season.
