CHS Soccer Claims District Title

CHS Lady Raider head soccer coach David Amado

Following Friday’s District 8AAA coaches’ meeting, it was confirmed that the Coffee County soccer team won the regular season district title.  Coffee County and Lincoln County tied with the best overall records at 6 wins, 1 loss and 1 tie.  The Lady Raiders earned the district title by virtue of aggregate goals.

During the regular season, Coffee County and Lincoln County split their 2 meetings.  Lincoln County defeated Coffee County 3 to 1 at Coffee County on Monday, September 25th.  Coffee County returned the favor on Thursday night with a 3 to 0 victory.  Since Coffee County scored 4 goals overall to Lincoln County’s 3 goals, Coffee County earned the regular season district title.  .

The title gives the Lady Raiders a berth in the district tournament semifinals against the winner of the play-in game.  It also means that the Lady Raiders will have home field advantage throughout the district tournament.  Coffee County will open the district tournament at home on Tuesday, October 10th at 6:30 PM.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast as part of the First National Bank Hometown Sports Series.

Motlow Soccer to Host Gordon State in Shelbyville, Raise Funds for Multi-County Cancer Support Network

The Motlow State Lady Bucks will host Gordon State (GA) College for a soccer match on Saturday, Oct. 7, at Shelbyville Central High School in Shelbyville. Admission is $5 per person, with half the admission proceeds to be donated to the Multi-County Cancer Support Network. In addition, fans are encouraged to wear pink to show support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.

According to the Multi-County Cancer Support Network website, “MCCSN is a not-for-profit organization formed to help relieve the everyday crises of families touched by cancer in an eight-county area including Franklin, Coffee, Moore, Lincoln, Grundy, Marion, Warren, and Bedford. Financial aid is provided to those qualifying as well as wheelchairs, wigs, etc.”

The Lady Bucks (2-5-1) are first scheduled to travel to Lookout Mountain, Georgia, to face the Covenant College JV squad Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Motlow is recovering from a weekend road trip to Mississippi that saw it drop a pair of matches, both by shutout. On Friday the Lady Bucks went to Senatobia and dropped a 1-0 decision to Northwest Mississippi, then traveled to Tupelo Saturday and fell to Itawamba 2-0.

Although the defense and goal keeping continue to play at a high level for the Lady Bucks, the offense has been unable to get untracked the past three contests after scoring 11 goals over two games in mid-September.

Friday’s game was a foul-marred event, with eight by Motlow and seven by Northwest Mississippi. The home team had 17 total shots with Motlow shooting 10 times. From her goalkeeper position, Motlow’s Lena Alakabi blocked seven of eight shots on goal. Northwest scored its goal at the 52:48 mark as Taylor Williams knocked in a rebound.

Saturday the home team had both goals by halftime, then held off the Lady Bucks’ efforts in the second half. Itawamba scored at the 13-minute mark with Deanna Christie and at 35 minutes with Allie Barnett. Motlow took 11 shots on the afternoon but couldn’t get any inside the posts, while the Lady Bucks goalkeepers made 10 saves.

Saturday’s game in Shelbyville is the first of three remaining home games during the inaugural season of Motlow soccer. The Lady Bucks will host Southwest Tennessee on Tuesday, Oct. 10, at 6 p.m. at the Johnson Lane Recreation Area in Tullahoma, then host Covenant College in Smyrna on Oct. 18.

Crash Involves University of the South Students

A crash in Marion County has sent several college students to the hospital.
The South Pittsburg Mountain Volunteer Fire Department and Tennessee Highway Patrol responded to the crash on South Pittsburg Mountain Road (SR 156).
The crash occurred around 10:30pm Friday night. It involved one SUV with 10 people from Sewanee, Tennessee’s University of the South and one visitor inside. Four were taken by helicopter to the hospital. They all have serious injuries.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol says preliminary reports show the car ran off the roadway, overcorrected and came back onto the road before flipping and rolling down an embankment.
The crash occurred near the county line with Franklin County. Marion County officials said the crash scene was cleared around 2 a.m. Saturday.
Senior Associate Dean of Student Life Becky Spurlock disclosed the University’s decision to suspend operation the sorority the students were involved in until an investigation regarding the accident had been completed.

Duck River Electric Co-Op Warns of Scam

DREMC members should be on guard for a resurfacing of an electric bill payment scam, which was reported in the Manchester area last week.
The people behind this fraud instruct members to pay their electric bills right then by credit card over the phone, or they will be disconnected within 30 minutes. The scammers have left this number, 931-572-5620, ext. 1, with members to call back with their credit card information. Thankfully, most of the members became immediately aware that this was a scam and did not give any payment information to the scammers. However, one such business fell prey to the scam and sent the scammers $350.
“We appreciate our members for calling the Manchester DREMC district office and reporting the scam,” says Michael Millraney, Manchester district manager. “This gives us the opportunity to alert members across our entire service area.”
“Please remember, if you ever have questions about your bill or a recent payment, call your local DREMC office yourself to ensure that you are talking to an actual DREMC employee working in one of our local offices,” advised Millraney.
DREMC mails late notices if your bill is past due, and the notices include a scheduled disconnection date. There also are a variety of ways to pay bills, including in the local offices, by phone talking to a DREMC representative on lines manned 24/7, online at www.dremc.com and by using our free and secure mobile app download.
