CCMS 6th Grade Basketball Teams Fall at White County on Tuesday

Marissa Medina of CCMS basketball

Hitting the road for the second night in a row, the Coffee County Middle School 6th grade basketball teams took on White County on Tuesday night in Sparta.  Coming off a pair of wins on Monday night, the Raider teams could not duplicate the feat against the always tough Warrior squads.  The Lady Raiders fell 36 to 11 while the Red Raiders were defeated 49 to 26.

In the girls’ game, following a close first half, White County outscored the Lady Raiders 15 to 3 in the 3rd quarter to put the game out of reach.  The Lady Raiders were held to 1 field goal in the second half as their record drops to 1 and 1 on the year.  Marissa Medina led Coffee County in scoring with 4 points.

In the boys’ contest, White County used a 17 to 2 scoring advantage in the 4th quarter to power away for the win on their home floor.  Coffee County was led in scoring by Ethan Hargrove who had 10 points.  Brendon Sheppard added 5 points for the Red Raiders.

The next action for the 6th graders is Monday.  The Red Raiders travel to Tullahoma to take on the West Tullahoma.  This will be a boys’ only contest and will begin at 6 PM.  Both teams return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Decherd to take on North Franklin.  The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM.

Preds Raise Banner, Win Home Opener in Dramatic Fashion

Well, that’s one way to do it.

After giving up five consecutive goals to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Nashville Predators scored three unanswered of their own to win their home opener by a 6-5 final at Bridgestone Arena.

Two power-play markers in the final 1:27 of regulation from Scott Hartnell and Filip Forsberg gave Nashville their first win of the young season, and after the Predators raised their Western Conference Championship banner to the rafters, it couldn’t have come on a more opportune occasion.

“It was exciting to see that the fans got what they paid for tonight,” Hartnell said. “It was a great start to the game; up 3-0. That game should be shut down at that point. Some sloppy play led to them taking over the game and you’re not going to come back like that against a lot of teams in this League, but we were able to do it tonight with some big power play goals at the end.”

“It was a huge game for us,” Preds goaltender Pekka Rinne said. “Good start to the game, then let it slip a little bit, and then a huge comeback. I feel like we’ve done that many times, but it’s a pretty hard way to play. Emotionally and everything, it was a big win for us.”

Scott Hartnell said the day before Nashville’s home opener he was hoping to hear Tim McGraw a few times. He got his wish on six occasions.

Two of those goals came off of his very own stick – including one to tie the game at five – giving him three in his first three outings of the season. In what was something of comeback for the veteran forward, a second chance with his original team, saying he’s making the most of it thus far would be an understatement. And although it’s early, Hartnell has already shown exactly what he can bring to this club night after night.

“He’s been awesome, he really has,” Nashville Head Coach Peter Laviolette said of Hartnell. “Tonight, he worked and worked. Took a bad penalty and he apologized for it right away, he knew it was a bad penalty. But you can’t question his heart or what he’s doing out here. He looked really good in training camp, he looks in shape and ready to play and wants to contribute and that’s exactly what I saw tonight.”

A full two-minute, 5-on-3 advantage isn’t necessarily considered in the game plan, but that’s exactly what the Predators got on Thursday night.

They took advantage when Hartnell deposited a rebound past Brian Elliott to knot the game at 5-5 late in regulation. But then, Flyers Head Coach Dave Hakstol challenged the play for offside.

If successful, the goal gets wiped out and the Flyers still have a chance. If the opposite occurs, not only is the game tied, but Philadelphia takes a delay of game penalty to keep Nashville on the 5-on-3.

Bet you can guess what happened.

Forsberg scored Nashville’s sixth and final goal moments later, giving the Preds two points and sending the Flyers home with nothing.

“We practice the 5-on-3 a lot, we just practiced it in the last practice yesterday,” Laviolette said. “We just ran through the motions. The six [players] is a bonus; getting the extra guy out there to help in the front of the net and help retrieve rebounds. I think our guys did a really good job.”

Defenseman Samuel Girard made his NHL debut on Tuesday night, skating in 18:52 of time on ice and looking like he belonged at this level throughout the evening. He also collected his first NHL point, a secondary assist on Filip Forsberg’s first goal of the third period.

He may only be 19 years of age, but Girard is already showing what he can do at this level. A few solo laps during warm-ups courtesy of his teammates as a rite of initiation set the tone, and from there came the first of what is likely many stellar outings in the years to come.

“He was very impressive and fun to watch,” Rinne said of Girard. “He played with a lot of confidence, and you couldn’t tell it was his first game the way he was very poised and the decisions he made. He looked guys off, spun around with the puck, and made good first passes. I’m very happy for him, I’m sure he was nervous, but he didn’t show it. I was very impressed.”

“He showed so much poise from start to finish,” Laviolette said of Girard. “I think there’s things he’s going to learn; the game becomes quicker, the defenses become quicker, and the guys you have to defend become quicker. But you have to give him a lot of credit because he showed up and played a pretty good game tonight.”

The Predators players gathered on one end of the ice, turned their heads skyward and reminisced about the 2017 Stanley Cup Playoffs one final time.

With the help of current Captain Roman Josi and former Captain Mike Fisher, the Western Conference Championship banner was revealed prior to Thursday’s home opener in Nashville, an emotional moment for the franchise, the first script of its kind to hang from the rafters.

Notes:

Josi and forward Colton Sissons missed Tuesday’s game with lower-body injuries and both are considered day-to-day.

Kevin Fiala returned to the Nashville lineup after missing Saturday’s game in Pittsburgh with an upper-body injury.

Nashville has now won all four home openers under Head Coach Peter Laviolette and have now been victorious in eight of their last 11 home openers overall.

The Predators close out their two-game home stand on Thursday night against Dallas before heading to Chicago for their first meeting with the Blackhawks since last spring’s sweep; that meeting comes on Saturday.

Crash Sends Two Children to the Hospital and One Adult to Jail

Susan Marie Mowery… Photo provided by the CCSD.

A resident of Manchester was arrested after being involved in a single vehicle crash.
Susan Marie Mowery, 31, of 16th Model Road, Manchester was charged with two counts of reckless endangerment, two counts of vehicular assault and DUI.
According to a warrant obtained by Coffee County Sheriff’s Deputy Shaun Greene, on Oct. 8 he was dispatched to a single vehicle crash in which an 11-year-old had been ejected from the vehicle.
Upon arrival the officer saw a vehicle sitting in the road with severe damage and several people nearby. The officer observed the 11-year-old and a 3-year-old who were injured.
Members of the Coffee County Ambulance Service arrived and paramedics began treatment of the 11-year-old and attempted to place the child in the back of the ambulance but, according to arrest warrants, Mowery refused to listen to ambulance personal and the deputy told her to leave the back of the ambulance.
The deputy walked her back to his patrol car and noted a strong odor of intoxicant on her. He asked Mowery if she had been drinking and she stated, “a little,” according to warrant. The warrant states that she performed poorly on six field sobriety tests. She was transported to Unity Medical Center for an alcohol blood test.
The 11-year-old and the 3-year-old were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

ACT Scores Showing Record Results

Education Department Commissioner Candice McQueen has announced that Tennessee public school students have crossed a new threshold, earning an average composite score of 20.1 on the ACT. Tennessee public high school students improved from the 2016 average of 19.9, with more than 3,500 additional students taking the exam this year. The results also show that about 1,800 more Tennessee public school graduates became eligible for the HOPE scholarship by earning composite score of 21 or higher.
Additionally, public school students improved in every section of the ACT by increasing their average score in English, reading, math, and science. The average ACT score for public school students in each subject area was:
19.6 in English, up 0.1 points,
20.5 in reading up 0.1 points,
19.4 in math, up 0.2 points; and
20.3 in science, up 0.2 points.
Coffee County High School students averaged 19.6 out of 399 taking the test and 206 Tullahoma students averaged 21.5 on the ACT.

Gas Prices are Falling

Tennessee gas prices have been on a steep slide for the last three weeks and should drift even lower this week. The state average declined for the 28th consecutive day on Sunday, dropping a total of 20 cents during that time.
Tennessee motorists are paying an average of $2.39 at the pump, an 8-cent discount from last week. Despite the recent decline at the pump, regular unleaded remains 25 cents more than this time last year, as prices recover from supply and demand issues related to recent hurricanes.
The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.49.
The low price in Coffee County as of Tuesday afternoon was $2.19 in both Manchester and Tullahoma.

Tennessee Supreme Court Looking to Help Poor People with Legal Needs

Coffee County Courthouse

Tennessee’s Supreme Court is suggesting changes to help poor people get proper legal representation.
A court news release recommends a bump from a $40 or $50 hourly pay rate for appointed lawyers to a $65 hourly rate. It would be the first increase in two decades.
Additionally, the court seeks a $500 boost to today’s $1,500 lawyer pay cap in indigent cases.
The court suggests new public defender appellate and conflicts divisions, the latter to ensure public defenders are used instead of private attorneys.
Judges would have to explain public defender conflicts before appointing private attorneys.
A new state commission would oversee indigent representation issues.
The court says it will bill periodically, instead of after cases, to ensure lawyers are paid more quickly.
Many of the suggestions require legislative approval.

New Tennessee State Museum continues to Receive Donations

The new Tennessee State Museum project has yielded more than $25 million in donations by corporations, foundations and individuals.
In a news release this week, museum officials said the money committed during the initial “silent phase” puts the campaign more than halfway toward its $40 million fundraising goal.
Some notable companies that contributed include CoreCivic, HCA Healthcare, Bridgestone Americas Trust Fund, FedEx, AT&T, Verizon Foundation and Nissan North America, Inc.
Well-known political names and their families who donated include Gov. Bill Haslam, House Speaker Beth Harwell, U.S. Rep. Diane Black and former U.S. Sen. Bill Frist.
Haslam and lawmakers secured $120 million in the 2015-2016 state budget for the museum, with the $40 million extra to be raised.
The new museum in Nashville is set to be open in late 2018.

Remi Benjamin of CCMS basketball

The 6th grade basketball teams of Coffee County Middle School opened the season on the road in Tullahoma on Monday night.  The Raiders and Lady Raiders took on the Panthers of East in a pair of hard fought games.  Coffee County was able to capture a pair of wins as the Lady Raiders won 23 to 15.  The Red Raiders battled to a 33 to 27 win.

In the girls’ game, Coffee County led from wire to wire as they were able to shut down the Lady Panthers on the defensive end of the floor for the first 3 quarters.  A handful of missed shots and turnovers kept East in the game in the 4th quarter.  Coffee County was led in scoring by Remi Benjamin who had 12 points.  Samantha Kirby added 6 points and Marissa Medina finished with 4.

Ethan Hargrove of CCMS basketball

The Red Raiders roared out to a 15 to 3 first quarter lead behind a trip of 3 pointers from Ethan Hargrove.  After building the lead to 25 to 10 at the half, Coffee County saw East capitalize on some 2nd half turnovers to make the game interesting in the fourth quarter.  Hargrove finished as the high scorer for the Red Raiders as he finished with 14 points.  Cooper Reed added 10 points and Donovan Morgan finished with 4.

Coffee County travels to Sparta on Tuesday for a pair of games with White County.  The girls’ game gets underway at 6 PM at White County Middle School.
