The CHS basketball teams hosted old rival Grundy County on Monday night in their first home game of the season.  Once again using a strong defensive performance, each Raider team got victories in front of a pre-holiday crowd at the Joe Frank Patch Gym.  The Lady Raiders came away with a 53 to 46 victory while the Red Raiders prevailed 73 to 50.

The Lady Raiders had their hands full with a hot shooting, scrappy Lady Jackets team.  Trailing by 7 points with 4:26 left in the 2nd quarter, the Lady Raiders turned up the defensive pressure to close the half on a 15 to 4 run and take a 4 point lead into the half.  The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Bella Vinson who had 18 points.  Alliyah Williams had 15 points, including 10 in the first half to be named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.   The Lady Raiders are now 3 and 0 on the season.

The Red Raiders broke open a tie game in the final 7 minutes of the first half to take a 33 to 24 lead into halftime.  In the second half, the Red Raiders pushed the lead in 30 points in the 4th quarter to run their record to 3 and 0 on the year.   Garrett Booth had a career game for Coffee County as the senior netted 25 points and led the team in assists.  For his performance, Booth earned the Crazy Daisies player of the game award.  DeAaron Rozier and Harley Hinshaw each netted 13 points and Darius Rozier chipped in 9.

Coffee County will now be off for the Thanksgiving holidays.  The Lady Raiders will take part in tournament in Woodbury on Friday and Saturday.  Coffee County will take on Station Camp on Friday at 3:00 at the Woodbury Grammar School.   Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast of Friday’s game.  On Saturday morning at 9, the Lady Raiders will play Smyrna at Cannon County High School.  Both Raider teams return to the court on Tuesday, November 28th when they visit Fayetteville.

CCMS Basketball Sweeps East Tullahoma on Monday Night

Jacob Holder of CCMS basketball

The Coffee County Middle School basketball team welcomed conference rival East Tullahoma to the CCMS Gym on Monday night.  In their final game before Thanksgiving, the Lady Raiders and Red Raiders swept the visiting Panthers.  The Lady Raiders got a 50 to 17 win while the Red Raiders clawed their way to a 41 to 39 decision.

The Lady Raiders led from wire to wire in the blowout win.  Coffee County held East to 6 first half points as they took a 29 to 6 lead into intermission.  Marley Perry led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 16 points, including 11 in the first quarter.  Kiya Ferrell chipped in 12 points and Alivia Reel scored 6.

The Red Raiders outscored the visitors from Tullahoma 11 to 4 in the 3rd quarter to take a decisive advantage into the final 6 minutes.  The Red Raiders held off a 4th quarter charge from the Panthers for the win.  Jacob Holder led Coffee Middle in scoring with 9 points.  Aiden Abellana added 7 points and Conner Shemwell, Ethan Baker and Rueben Alvarez all finished with 6.

The Coffee Middle teams will now take off for the Thanksgiving holidays.  The Raiders and Lady Raiders return to action on Monday, November 27th when they travel to Decherd to take on North Franklin.  Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast of that game as part of the First National Bank Hometown Sports Series.   Lucky Knott will be on the call as the opening tip is set for 6 PM.  Thunder Radio’s live coverage begins at 5:50 with the pregame show.

Ekholm Scores in Fourth Straight, Preds Top Jets

Mattias Ekholm set a franchise record, and the Nashville Predators defeated the Winnipeg Jets by a 5-3 final on Monday night at Bridgestone Arena. The win is Nashville’s second consecutive victory and their fifth win in their last seven tries over Winnipeg.

After a first period that saw the score even at 1-1, the Preds exploded for three goals in the middle frame and added another in the third to score at least four times for the fifth consecutive game. Against a Winnipeg team that now only sits one point ahead of Nashville for second place in the Central Division, the win was a gratifying one for Nashville.

“I thought we played well,” Ekholm said. “[Winnipeg] looked tired [in the second period] and we just kept coming at them – they took some penalties and we got some goals. We got that separation and that was the difference in the end. I feel like we’re really strong at home.”

Kevin Fiala got Nashville on the board first with a beautiful move to the backhand before Mathieu Perreault tied the game minutes later.

Then, it was Ryan Johansen, Kyle Turris and Ekholm all tallying in the second stanza for the Preds, the final two coming with the man advantage. Johansen’s goal was his 300th NHL point, while Ekholm’s goal was his fourth in as many games (more on that below).

Nick Bonino potted his third of the season in the final frame, and although the Jets added two more before the horn sounded, Nashville will certainly take the two points – and the goals just keep on coming.

“With Kyle [Turris] coming into the lineup, he’s a very offensive guy and that changed the whole team and the lines of our offense,” Fiala said. “We are changing our mindset and playing more offense. We are attacking the game, and that’s what we are doing now to find success.”

Tickling the Twine:

When you’re hot, you’re hot.

Monday’s 5-3 win against Winnipeg marked the fifth consecutive game that saw the Preds score at least four goals and the eighth consecutive contest that has seen them light the lamp on at least three occasions.

As has been the case in seemingly every game during the streak, five different Preds found the back of the net in the win as the contributions continue to come from top to bottom in the Nashville lineup.

“There was a lot of talk in the beginning of the year because we weren’t scoring goals,” Nashville Head Coach Peter Laviolette said. “There’s always something to coach up in the locker room and address with the players, and you hope for a good response. Sometimes, you just get in a funk with something, and it’s not working. At the beginning of the year, it was the goals, or output, or the 5-on-5 goals and production. Those things usually work themselves out if you can keep to the process and keep doing things the right way. We played well offensively, and at times we’ve really been humming in the offensive zone. I thought we’ve done some good things.”

In particular, Mattias Ekholm has contributed to that cause in four-straight games, setting a Predators franchise record for consecutive contests with a goal by a blueliner. Ekholm also became the first NHL defenseman to score a goal in four straight since Brent Burns had a four-game streak (Feb. 29-March 7, 2016).

“Just shooting the puck, I guess, and playing on a really good power-play unit,” Ekholm said of his scoring touch. “With Kyle Turris and Roman Josi, Kevin Fiala is really good in the middle and Colton Sissons in front of the net – credit to those guys for giving me the opportunity to shoot the puck.”

“He’s a great player,” Laviolette said of Ekholm. “I think what we’re seeing is that he’s got a good shot from the point right now. He’s getting some power-play time and he’s really bringing the hammer from the weak side of the ice. It’s good for him. He’s done a really good job fitting in on the power play. I think the power plays looked really good in the last 10 games or so. We’ve been able to produce and score some goals, and he’s a big part of that. He’s a 200-foot player both ways and playing very well.”

Notes:

Kevin Fiala, who recorded a goal and an assist in Monday’s win, has posted back-to-back multipoint games for the first time in his career.

Ryan Johansen now has 19 points (10g-9a) in 14 career games vs. the Jets.

Prior to Monday’s game, the Predators recalled forwards Pontus Aberg and Frederick Gaudreau from Milwaukee. They also recalled goaltender Juuse Saros and returned netminder Anders Lindback to the Admirals.

Nashville finishes their three-game home stand on Wednesday night when they welcome Shea Weber and the Montreal Canadiens to town.

Man Killed in Grundy County while Walking in the Roadway

A Grundy County man is dead after he was hit by a car.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol said 67-year-old Thomas Argo of Gruetli-Laager was walking in the middle of the road on State Highway 56 when he was struck by a car heading north.
The THP said the driver did not see Argo.
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office confirms the 67-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle on Hwy 56 in the Cumberland Heights community.
Grundy County Sheriff Clint Shrum says it appears the man’s vehicle may have broken down in the Cumberland Heights community, and he was walking in the roadway when he was struck.
Officials say no charges have been filed on the driver.

Man who Allegedly Sold Heroin Laced with Fentanyl Arrested in Murfreesboro

Authorities say a Tennessee man has been arrested after two people suffered overdoses of heroin laced with the opioid fentanyl.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says two people in Murfreesboro suffered non-fatal drug overdoses on Friday.
Heroin recovered from the victims was examined at a TBI forensics lab, and it tested positive for the presence of fentanyl.
Agents arrested Richard Dale Bain and charged him with being the source of the heroin. He was booked into the Rutherford County Jail on a charge of possession of a Schedule I substance.

Wide Awake: Screen Time Affects TN Children, Study Finds

Experts recommend reducing access to screens to improve the sleep patterns and health of children. (Wicker Man/Flickr)

There’s new research about the importance of minimizing screen time for children during the evening hours.
If children are falling asleep watching TV or with a cell phone tucked under the covers, they’re probably going to bed later and getting much less sleep than children without access to electronic devices.
Monique LeBourgeois is the lead author of a new study published in the journal Pediatrics that says children are uniquely vulnerable to sleep disruption from electronic screens.
She says because young children’s eyes are not fully developed, the light has a greater effect on their internal body clock.
“And many parents believe that media – like watching a video or playing a game – actually calms their children before bedtime,” she relates. “But in fact, it may be the exact opposite, and we may be creating the perfect storm to disruption of the both the circadian clock and sleep.”
Other studies have found that screen time is associated with delayed bedtimes, fewer hours of sleep and poorer sleep quality.
According to Better Tennessee, a project of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Tennessee, 1 in 3 children in the state watch more than three hours of television daily.
A report from the nonprofit group Common Sense Media shows mobile media device use has tripled among children ages 5 to 16 in the past six years.
LeBourgeois describes light as the brain’s primary timekeeper, and says for children and adolescents, self-illuminated devices, including smartphones and televisions, bathe their eyes in blue light that can keep sleep at bay.
“So, this immature eye allows more light to actually hit the retina that signal the internal biological clock,” she explains.
LeBourgeois encourages parents to turn off their children’s electronic devices before bed and charge them somewhere outside bedrooms.
She adds parents can set an example by keeping TVs, computers, tablets and cellphones out of their own bedrooms as well.

11/24/17–Glenn Martin Branham

Glenn Martin Branham was born in Deland, Florida and graduated from high
school in Franklin, TN. He honorably served in the U.S. Air Force and was
trained as a Radar Electronics Technician.  He attended Motlow Community
College majoring in Electronics Engineering. Later he worked for Laser,
Inc., and the U. T. Space Institute; and retired after approximately 30
years from Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) in Tullahoma,
TN.

Glenn was married to Alma Lee Brasel for approximately 42 years and is
survived by step son, John Anthony Leonetti, Jr. and wife Carolyn and 2
step grandchildren, John and Andrea; and step son, Phillip Bennett
Leonetti and wife Diane; and his brother Gus Warren.
Glenn was soft spoken, kind and patient.  He will be missed.  Glenn loved
music and played harmonica and dulcimer proficiently.  He played at many
Ole Time Fiddler and Dulcimer conventions throughout Middle Tennessee.
He performed and demonstrated how to play dulcimers for Paul Pyle at
these conventions for many years. Glenn liked the mathematics involved in
fretting stringed instruments and the various modes of music. His depth
of knowledge in electronics and speaker acoustics was astounding.  He
passed his knowledge of acoustics to his step grandson, John Leonetti,
who is a successful mechanical engineer in Arizona.  Glenn also
encouraged Phillip Leonetti in learning the nylon string guitar and
singing folk music. Glenn and Phillip performed together at many arts and
crafts shows and fiddler conventions in the 1970s.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, November 24, 2017
at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with burial to follow.  Mr. Branham passed
away on November 8, 2017 at his residence.

Coffee County Funeral Chapel is honored to serve the Branham family.
