New Laws Began Monday
Two of 18 new laws that went into effect on January 1, 2018 will target distracted driving.
One law will make it illegal to talk on your cell phone in an active school zone. If you are caught talking on a hand-held phone in a school zone while lights are flashing, you could be fined $50. You can use a hands-free device.
Another new law prohibits colored headlights, which officials say, can be a distraction for some drivers. Under the law, only white or amber headlights will be allowed while driving. Colored headlights will still be allowed if your vehicle is stationary, such as a classic car at a cruise-in.

Lady Raider Basketball Claims Whitwell Tournament Championship
A pair of great defensive plays and a huge Ellie Graham three point basket midway through the 1st quarter sparked a 7 point rally that gave Coffee County a lead they would not surrender on Saturday night. The Lady Raiders parlayed that 5 point lead into a 19 point advantage at the half as Coffee County won the championship of the Whitwell Christmas Tournament. Coffee County outlasted a big and physical Red Bank team 60 to 50 to run their record to 13 and 1 on the season.
A trio of sophomores had strong 1st halves as Graham, Jenna Garretson and Ashley Starks all had clutch performances in the half as Coffee County played their 2nd straight game without injured senior post player Alliyah Williams. Junior Jacey Vaughn was also pressed into service in the post and performed well against the tall and physical Lady Lions.
Red Bank cut the Raider lead to 5 before Graham hit a three point basket in the closing seconds of the 3rd quarter and another to open the 4th quarter. An Abby Morgan runner with 4:57 remaining stretched the lead back to 6 points and effectively ended Red Bank’s 2nd half rally. Coffee County hit their free throws down the stretch to claim the tournament title.
Coffee County was led in scoring by Bella Vinson who finished with 22 points. Garretson added 12 points, Graham finished with 10, Morgan had 9 points and Starks tallied 7 points.
The Lady Raiders and Red Raiders return to action on Tuesday when they welcome Warren County to the Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gym. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM with the boys to follow. Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the broadcast beginning with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental Pregame Show at 5:50.

Titans Beat Jaguars; Play Chiefs in First Round Saturday
The Titans are headed to the playoffs.
The Titans made good on their “Win and We’re In” predicament with a 15-10 win over the Jaguars, punching their ticket into the postseason for the first time since 2008.
The Titans finished the regular season with a 9-7 record. Due to Cincinnati’s upset victory over Baltimore, the fifth-seeded Titans will travel to Kansas City to face the AFC West champion Kansas City chiefs on Saturday, Jan. 6 at 3:35 p.m., CT.
Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 12-of-21 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown in the game. Mariota’s biggest play of the game came late on a third-and-five run, when he stiff-armed a defender and got the first down on a 15-yard run in the closing minutes.
The defense forced turnovers and made plays throughout for the Titans.
Temperature at kickoff was 23 degrees, with a wind chill of 16 degrees. The kickoff temperature set the record for the coldest game in Nissan Stadium history, breaking the previous record of 25 degrees for the Titans-Steelers game in 2014.
The Titans took a 6-0 lead early in the second quarter on a 66-yard pass from Mariota to running back Derrick Henry. On the play, Henry caught a screen pass, and picked up blocks from offensive linemen Quinton Spain and Ben Jones before racing into the open field, where he outraced Jaguars defenders to the end zone. But the extra point was blocked.
The Jaguars cut the lead to 6-3 on a 41-yard field goal by kicker Josh Lambo with 10:14 left in the second quarter.
The Titans took the lead 9-3 on a 25-yard field goal by kicker Ryan Succop. The play was set up by tight end Phillip Supernaw’s fumble recovery on a muffed punt by the Jaguars.
The Titans then stretched the lead to 12-3 on Succop’s 39-yard field goal. It was set up by rookie Adoree’ Jackson’s forced fumble, which was recovered by rookie linebacker Jayon Brown.
In the third quarter, the Titans extended their lead to 15-3 on a 38-yard field goal by Succop.
Disaster struck early in the fourth quarter when Mariota and Henry collided in the backfield, and the ball popped loose. Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue picked up the loose ball and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown, and suddenly it was 15-10.
But the Titans held on, and will play the Chiefs in the opening round of the playoffs on Saturday.
