CHS Basketball Teams Sweep Grundy County on Saturday Night
Leading by 8 after 1 quarter, the Lady Raiders used their tenacious defense to outscore Grundy County 28 to 4 in the 2nd quarter and effectively put the game out of reach. Coffee County was able to empty the bench in the 2nd half as they captured their 19th win of the year.
Abby Morgan led the Lady Raiders in scoring with 17 points. Bella Vinson added 11 points and Jacey Vaughn chipped in 9. Morgan was named the Crazy Daisies player of the game.
An A.J. Rollman 3 pointer at the end of the 1st quarter helped spark a 2nd quarter rally that saw the Raiders go from a 5 point 1st quarter deficit to a 5 point halftime lead. In the second half, Coffee County built a 7 point lead heading to the 4th quarter only to see Grundy County make a late charge in the final 90 seconds. Coffee County was able to hit their free throws in the final minute to capture the win.
Darius Rozier led Coffee County in scoring with 20 points while Garrett Booth and A.J. Rollman each added 11. DeAaron Rozier finished with 7 points as the Raiders improved to 13 and 6 overall. Darius Rozier and Rollman were named the Crazy Daisies co-players of the game.
The Raiders and Lady Raiders return to district action on Tuesday when they visit Fayetteville to take on Lincoln County. The district doubleheader will tip off at 6 PM. Thunder Radio will bring you live coverage beginning at 5:50 PM with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental pregame show.

Coffee County Elementary Basketball Championships Claimed on Saturday
The Lady Rebels held a 23 to 15 with 4 seconds remaining in the 3rd period before a rebound and put back by North Coffee cut into the lead and set the stage for an exciting finish. In the 4th quarter, New Union built the lead back to 9 points at 29 to 20 before the Lady Chargers got their offense rolling. North Coffee was able to cut the lead to 1 point with 18 seconds left but New Union was able to hang on for the 31 to 30 win.
The College Street Cougars tangled with their old rival Westwood Eagles in the boys’ final. The Cougars, who have a winning streak stretching more than 4 years, needed a blocked shot in the final seconds to claim another title. Trailing 21 to 13 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Westwood scored the final 6 points in the 3rd quarter to set up an exciting finish. Tied at 21, 23 and 26 in the final period, College Street hit a pair of free throws with 14 seconds left to get a 28 to 26 lead. The Cougars blocked a Westwood shot in the final seconds and hit a pair of free throws to ice the 30 to 26 win.CHS Swimmers Post Record Breaking Performances at Region Meet

Kaylee Williams set a new school record as she captured 12th place in the 100 yard breaststroke. Williams covered the distance in 1:11.34. Williams also set a new personal best in the 200 yard IM as she finished in 19th place with a time of 2:22.84.
Jack Beachboard set a new school for the highest ever regional finish as he finished in 3rd place in the 100 yard breaststroke with a new personal best time of 1:01.62. Beachboard also had a 4th place finish in the 200 yard IM with a time of 2:01.27 which was 1.90 seconds better than his personal best.
Anna O’Connor captured a state qualifying time in the 200M freestyle when she cut 5 seconds off her personal best by cutting through the water in 2:09.59. O’Connor also qualified for the state in the 100 butterfly as she cut through the water with a time of 1:06
Jase Rice cut 11 seconds off his personal best in the 200 yard IM with a time 2:24.38.
Lindsey Cauble set a new personal best in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 30.73.
The girls’ 200 freestyle team of Allie Marlow, Lindsey Cauble, Anna O Connor and Kaylee Williams knocked 6 seconds off their season best time as they covered the distance in 2:00.29. They also swam their best ever time in the 400M freestyle.
Next up for the Raider swimmers is the TISCA State Championship Meet in Knoxville next month. The state meet will be held at the University of Tennessee on February 9th and 10th. Coffee County swimmers who have qualified for the state meet are: Anna O’Connor (100M backstroke, 200M freestyle, 100M butterfly), Kaylee Williams(200M freestyle,200M IM, 100M breaststroke, and 500M freestyle) and Jack Beachboard(200M freestyle, 200M IM, 100M butterfly, 100M freestyle, 500M freestyle, 100M backstroke and 100M breaststroke)
Coffee County Middle School Swimmers Make a Splash at Regional Meet

Norman-Young, Wall, Hutchings and Williams teamed up to place 14th in the 400M freestyle relay and 16th in the 200 freestyle relay. The 200 relay team broke their season record by 16 seconds and the school record by 8 seconds as they swam the event in 2:10.50. Their 400 relay time of 5:13.18 also set a new school record.
Kennedy Norman-Young advanced to the finals in the 50 freeestyle. Her finals time of 28.36 was a new personal best at that distance. Her finish was also good enough to capture 9th place. Kennedy also finished in 17th place in the 100 breaststroke with a new personal best of 1:26.46 which was just short of advancing to the finals.
William Tobitt reached the finals heat in the 100 freestyle as he finished 9th with a new personal record time of 56.77. He also finished 17th in his preliminary heat of the 50 freestyle with a time 26.44.
Emily Williams captured 16th place in the finals of the 200 freestyle as she cut 4.61 seconds off her preliminary heat time. Williams finished the race in 2:20.84. Emily also finished in 21st place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:29.52.
Aly Hutchings competed in the 50 freestyle and posted a time on 33.27. She also posted a time of 1:25.50 in the 100 freestyle.
Taylor Wall posted a new personal best in the 50 freestyle with a time of 33.87. Wall also competed in the 100 backstroke finishing in a time of 1:28.45
Temple Baptist Splits Friday Doubleheader in Georgia
Hitting the road to Tunnel Hill, Georgia, the Temple Baptist Christian School visited Dogwood Christian Academy on Friday. The junior varsity claimed their 2nd win of the year 44 to 33. The varsity Eagles fell 63 to 37.
After falling behind 12 to 7 after 1 quarter, the JV Eagles roared back in the 2nd quarter to forge a 21 to 17 halftime lead. Temple pulled away in the 2nd half to capture their second win on the season. Mich Gloden led the Eagles in scoring with 20 points. Alex Gloden added 10.
The varsity Eagles saw Dogwood race out to a 27 to 16 lead in the first period. Temple was held to 12 points in the 2nd half in the loss. Cody Swayze led Temple in scoring with 26 points. Mich Gloden added 5.
The Eagles return home for a Thursday night game with Faith Christian from Jamestown. This will be a varsity only contest and it will begin at 6 PM at Temple’s E.C. Bailey Gym.
1/29/18 — Charles Willis O’Neal
Funeral services for Mr. Charles Willis O’Neal, age 70 of Murfreesboro, will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018 at Coffee County Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Monday prior to the service from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Mr. O’Neal passed away on Thursday, January 25, 2018.
Charles was born on August 4, 1947 in Coffee County to the late, Charles Edward O’Neal and Jo Willis O’Neal Whiteaker. He retired from the paving industry and was always proud of his work. Hunting, golfing and fishing were the things that he enjoyed, but most of all, he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survived by his son, Justin O’Neal and wife Sara; daughter, Jody Wrather and husband Michael; grandchildren, Morgan and Parker O’Neal, Harrison, Sumner and Katie Wrather; several cousins and many friends.

Jim R Heath II, of Tullahoma, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018 at St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital in Murfreesboro at the age of 42 years. Memorial Services are scheduled for Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at 2 PM at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive visitors beginning at 1 PM.
Jim was born on December 7, 1975 in Newport, RI. He loved watching sports, especially the University of Alabama football games. He was also an avid reader with his favorite author being Stephen King.
He is survived by his father, Jim R. Heath I of Franklin County; mother and step-father, Cecelia Revere and her husband, Vaughn R of Parkston, NC; and brothers, William Heath of Winchester, Matthew Heath and his wife, Kathy of Winchester, Vaughn Revere Jr of NC, Mickel Dashno and his wife, Letisha of Estill Springs and Scott Dashno and his wife, Sierra of Murfreesboro.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home.

1/29/18 — Daisy Lillie Grant
Daisy Lillie Grant, of Tullahoma, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018 at her residence at the age of 84 years. Funeral Services are scheduled for Monday, January 29, 2018 at 2 PM at the Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Hoover’s Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive visitors beginning at 11 AM.
Daisy, a native of Shelbyville, was the daughter of the late John William and Mary Ann Pitts.
She was a Supervisor at Tennessee Apparel for many years. She attended the Gospel Tabernacle Church. Mrs. Grant enjoyed gardening and worked hard in her flower garden. She also enjoyed taking walks and sitting in her swing on her back patio. She enjoyed family gatherings and traveling with the Senior Citizens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Grant; brother, Norman Price and sister, Marie Bly and grandchild, Kayla Dawn Mines.
She is survived by two sons, Sandy Alexander Grant and his wife, Lisa of Tullahoma and Jeffrey Lynn Grant, also of Tullahoma; two daughters, Sheila Headlee and her husband, Thomas of St. Mary, GA and Shelby Jean Mines and her husband, Jimmy of Tullahoma; brothers, James Edward Price of Wartrace, Willie Thurman Price of Bell Buckle, Melton Lee Price and his wife, Linda of Shelbyville and Roger Dale Price and his wife, Kim of Lithia, FL; five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made in her honor to the Hospice of the Highland Rim, 110 E Lauderdale St, Tullahoma, TN 37388.

CCMS Lady Raiders Advance to CTC Tournament Finals
After building a 5 point lead at the half, the Coffee County Middle School Lady Raider basketball team punched their ticket for the CTC tournament finals on Friday. Coffee Middle will advance to Saturday’s finals for the 5th straight season with Friday’s win. The Lady Raiders took down rival West Tullahoma by a final score of 30 to 21.
Coffee County used strong defensive pressure and 10 first half points from Marley Perry to take the 12 to 7 halftime lead. The Lady Raiders scored the first 8 points of the 2nd half to build a 13 point lead that was good enough to hold off a late Lady Bobcat rally.
The Lady Raiders were led in scoring by Perry who finished with 18 points. Kiya Ferrell and Nikki Graham each added 4 points. The win was the 18th of the year for Coffee County.
The Coffee County Middle Lady Raiders will now advance to the CTC Tournament finals on Saturday. Coffee County will take on North Franklin in the championship game beginning at 1 PM.

Monty Clell Wanamaker
Monty Clell Wanamaker, age 79, of McMinnville, TN, passed away on January 23, 2018 at St. Thomas River Park Hospital. His wishes were to be cremated and no memorial services.
Monty was born in Grundy County, TN, the son of the late Clifton and Louella Roberts Wanamaker. He was a self-employed artist/entrepreneur, whose art has been exhibited in numerous galleries, universities and museums since 1962, including Magness Library. At the age of 23, his first exhibit was in 1962 at the Parthenon Museum galleries in Nashville, TN, where he became the youngest curator. He was a member of the staff at The Phillips Collection, the country’s premier gallery of Modern Art. While living in New York City in the late 60’s, Monty studied at the Art Students League and had 2 successful solo shows. Art critics proclaimed him a “master craftsman” and a “mythical symbolist.” Also as a poet, Monty presented multi-media concerts, including one presented in 1979 at New York’s Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. His most current work, developed over a 25-year span, was first shown in 1999, at the Hunter Museum of American Art in Chattanooga, TN, where his multi-dimensional collages/assemblages were labeled “Visual Poems” by Chattanooga Times critic Ann Nichols. His works also included a book written about Warren County native, Dottie West.
Monty is survived by two sisters, Betty (Jesse) Betschart of Monteagle, TN and Kathy (John) Hipps of Altamont, TN; nephew, Jason (Lesa) Scott of McMinnville, TN; great-nephews, Landon and Brayden Scott; several cousins; a special friend, Chris Keathley; and a lot of special friends all over the country.
