CHS Softball Holds off Franklin County in Season Opener
A 3 run 3rd inning for Coffee County seemed to set the Lady Raiders up for an easy win, but Franklin County battled back with 2 runs in the 6th inning chasing starting pitcher Keri Munn. Coffee County used a pair of doubles in the 6th inning from Ashley Evans and Kasarah Scheller to take a 4 to 2 lead. But Franklin County scored a run in the 7th and got the tying run on by way of a Lady Raider error before Haley Richardson could get a groundout and a strikeout for the save.
Lauren Tomberlin and Katie Rutledge were each 2 for 3 for Coffee County. Sarah West, Raven Rogers and Scheller all finished with RBI doubles. Tomberlin had the other RBI via a single. Munn picked up the victory in her first ever varsity start. West was named the Crazy Daisies Player of the Game.
The Lady Raiders are back on the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to McMinnville to take on Warren County. First pitch is set for 5:30 PM at Warren County High School. Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you the action. Lucky Knott will be on the call with the pregame show beginning at 5:15.

CHS Baseball Downs Columbia to Open Season
Kicking off the 2018 season at Powers Field, the Coffee County CHS baseball team hosted Columbia on Monday night. Battling brutal wind chill temperatures, and an always strong Lions program, the Red Raiders hoped to get the 2018 season off on the right foot. Coffee County rode the arm and bat of senior Nathanial Tate to a 7 to 2 district win.
Coffee County was able to get 2 runs in the first inning on a 2 run home run by Tate to dead centerfield. An RBI double by Tate in the 4th inning made the score 4 to 0 after Tate came around to score on an RBI single from Skylar Bratcher. The Raiders added 3 unearned runs in the 5th inning to put the game on ice.
Tate finished with 3 hits and 3 RBI for Coffee County at the plate. The senior also pitched 5 innings for the win striking out 9 Lion hitters. Bratcher finished with 2 singles and 2 RBI. Hayden Skipper and Jacob Langham each scored 2 runs for the Red Raiders.
The Red Raiders will travel to Columbia on Tuesday for the second game in this district series. That game will get underway at 5 PM at Columbia Central High.
CHS Tennis Blanks Giles County to Open Season
The Coffee County tennis teams opened the season at home on Monday welcoming new district rival Giles County to the Raider Academy courts. A pair of young and talented Raider squads got off to a blazing hot start on a cold day with a pair of wins. The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders each got 7 to 0 sweeps.
The Red Raiders won a pair of singles matches and the #2 doubles match by forfeit. In singles play, Jayden Talley won 8 to 2, Jonah Rollman won 8 to 0 and Luke Irwin won 8 to 0. The freshman team of Irwin and Talley blanked the Bobcat tandem 8 to 0.
The Lady Raiders captured 5 singles wins and a pair of doubles wins in their 7 to 0 girls’ victory. The Lady Raiders got singles wins from Jessica Barrera(8 to 0), Natalie Elzeer(8 to 2), Kara Roper(8 to 5), Emily Shelton(8 to 2), Wren Lawson(8 to 0) and Odalis Garcia(8 to 0). The doubles team of Elzeer and Lawson got an 8 to 0 win while the doubles team of Barrera and Roper won 8 to 3.
The Raider netters hit the road on Thursday for a rematch with the Bobcats. That rematch will take place in Pulaski. First serve is set for 4 PM.
Westwood Softball Drills Cascade
Opening their home season on Monday night, the Westwood Middle School softball team hosted Cascade. Attempting to build on a season opening romp at Riverside from last week, Westwood hosted the perennial conference power Lady Champions. The Lady Rockets used an 8 run 1st inning to power to the 12 to 2 win in 6 innings.
Three hit batters, a pair of extra base hits and a walk were part of the huge Westwood rally in the first inning. A Haidyn Campbell triple, an Emma Kidder double and 3 errors by Cascade gave Westwood an 8 to 1 lead after the 1st inning. The Lady Rockets were able to add 3 more runs in the 3rd inning and end the game in the 6th with a single run.
Campbell went the distance in the circle with 10 strikeouts to get the win. Campbell and Kidder each finished with 2 RBI as they had the only extra base hits for Westwood. Paisley Campbell, Brooklyn Blake and Emmalise Raymer each added a single for the Lady Rockets who improved to 2 and 0 on the year.
The Lady Rockets will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to Fayetteville for a makeup game. First pitch is set for 5:30 PM.
Westwood Baseball Topples Huntland
The Rockets scored 3 runs in the first inning as the first 4 batters pounded out hits. Westwood added 2 more runs in the 2nd when Trent Thompson drove in a pair of runs with a 2 out single. Thompson also got the start on the mound for the Rockets as he picked up the win.
Thompson finished the game with a single and a double. Brady Nugent and Luke Beachboard each had a pair of hits and scored twice. The win gives the Rockets a 3 and 0 record in the conference.
The Rockets will be back in action on Tuesday for a rematch with the Hornets. That game will take place in Huntland as the 2nd game in the season series. First pitch is set for 5 PM.
