Gas Prices Up Again This Week
Tennessee motorists will soon find some of the highest gas prices in five months. Tennessee’s state average price of $2.41 is tied with the year’s high, set in February-and the highest price since October.
AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said gasoline demand has been very strong the past few weeks as Americans travel for spring break. This demand, coupled with lower supply levels sets the stage for higher prices in the coming weeks.
The national average price of a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.60, an increase of six cents since last week and 32 cents higher than a year ago.
The low price per gallon as of Monday afternoon was $2.35 in Manchester and $2.32 in Tullahoma.
Teen Driving Camp to be held in Tennessee
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security (TDOSHS) has announced its first Teen Driver Education Camp for high school students across the state. The camp will be hosted by Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) at the department’s training center 283 Stewarts Ferry Pike Nashville, TN from Monday, July 16, to Friday, July 20, 2018.
To attend the camp, interested teens must register online at www.reducetncrashes.org by May 1, 2018. There are no costs to participate; however, the program does not provide overnight lodging. Space is limited; therefore, registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
The Teen Driver Education Camp is intended for drivers ages 15 to 17. Participants are required to complete two days of educational training comprised of the “AAA How to Drive” curriculum, mock crash demonstration, traffic safety presentations, driving simulators, group activities, indoor/outdoor events, and more.
The first group of campers will attend Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; the second group will attend Wednesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
On Friday, July 20, all participants will attend graduation and receive a certificate of completion of the camp. Parents are encouraged to attend the graduation festivities as well.
TNReady Standardized Tests Score could count Larger Percentage of Student’s Final Grade
Midstate students may have a tougher time getting good grades if a proposed bill passes.
This bill could make TNReady standardized tests score a larger percentage of student’s final grade in some cases.
Right now, TNReady test scores make up 10 percent of the final grade for students in 3rd through 8th grade. That percentage is supposed to jump to 15 percent next school year.
This bill gives more power to local school boards to decide how much weight the standardized tests will have. It gives them the choice to make it a quarter of a student’s final grade, and it also gives schools the option of completely ignoring scores for grades 3 through 5.
For students in grades 6 to 8, the comprehensive test scores have to account for 10 to 25 percent of the student’s final grade.
The bill also forces the state to hand over the test scores on time. If they aren’t given to teachers on time, teachers don’t have to factor them into final grades.
As far as this new proposal goes, it has already passed the House. It’s on the schedule this week for the Senate Education Committee. (WSMV-TV)

CHS Baseball Gets Walk-Off Win on Saturday
The Red Raider baseball team of Coffee County CHS needed extra innings to get their 5th straight win on Saturday as they dropped the visiting Cougars of Middle Tennessee Christian. Coffee County got a walk-off single in the bottom of the 8th inning from A.J. Rollman to nab the win. The Red Raiders improved to 6 and 1 on the year with the 3 to 2 win.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th, Jacob Lanham stole 2nd base and scored on Rollman’s single to center field 2 pitches later. Rollman pitched 2 innings of shutout ball with 3 strikeouts to get the win on the mound. Harley Hinshaw got the start on the bump and went 4 innings without giving up a run. Ryan Stephens and Jonathan Sherrill each had a pair of singles and an RBI to lead the Coffee County hitting attack.
Coffee County returns to district action on Tuesday when Lawrence County visits Powers Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of the game. Our live coverage will lead off the pregame show beginning at 5:45.
CHS Softball Goes 1 and 2 in Saturday Tournament Action
Fighting off rainy weather, the Lady Raiders closed out play in the Warrior Classic in Murfreesboro on Saturday with 3 games. The Coffee County bats struggled in the 3 games as they finished the day 1 and 2. That performance gave the Lady Raiders a record of 3 and 4 for the tournament.
Opening up against South Elgin out of Illinois at 8 AM on Saturday, Coffee County fell behind 2 to 0 in the 1st inning. A single run in the 3rd and 4 more in the 4th inning gave the Lady Raiders a 5 to 2 leading entering the 6th inning. South Elgin rallied for 3 runs in the 6th and 3 more in the 7th to take the 8 to 5 win. Katie Rutledge, Shelby Scrivnor and Raven Rogers all finished with 2 hits apiece.
Pop ups were the story of Coffee County’s noon game with Smyrna. After allowing the Lady Bulldogs to score 4 runs in the first inning, the Lady Raiders could only manage 3 hits. Coffee County had 12 fly outs in the game to go along with 5 errors to lose 6 to 0. Haley Richardson took the hard luck loss as she surrendered 1 earned run.
Ending the day against Evansville North out on Indiana, the Lady Raiders played their best game of the day. Keri Munn pitched a shutout as Coffee County won 5 to 0. Kasarah Scheller was 2 for 3 with a double and 2 RBI to lead the Lady Raider hitting attack. Sarah West added a single and a double. Munn finished the game with 5 strikeouts.
The Lady Raiders return to Terry Floyd Field on Monday when they play host to non-district rival Warren County. First pitch is scheduled for 7 PM and Thunder Radio will bring you the broadcast of the game. Lucky Knott will be on the call as the pregame show will kick off our live coverage beginning at 6:45.
CHS Soccer Splits Games on Saturday in Cleveland
Playing a pair of games on Saturday, the CHS soccer team finished up play in the Cleveland Classic. The Red Raiders opened the day with a 2 to 0 win over Walker Valley. The Red Raiders dropped the nightcap 3 to 0 to Howard.
Despite Walker Valley possessing the ball for most of the first half, Coffee County converted on their first shot of the day as Briggs Haithcock directed a header past the Walker Valley keeper off an assist from David Morales. That goal in the 25th minute gave the Raiders a 1 to 0 lead at intermission. In the 2nd half, Morales made it 2 to 0 off an assist from Haithcock.
In the evening game, Howard jumped on Coffee County early scoring 3 goals in the first half. Despite shutting down the Howard offense in the second half, the Raiders could not find the back of the goal to prevent the shutout.
The Red Raiders now hit the road again as they travel to Myrtle Beach for a Spring Break tournament. Coffee County will open play on Thursday when they take on Seneca, South Carolina in a 7:30 PM(EDT) match. On Friday, the Raiders will play a pair of games as they take on Belton Honea Path at 11 AM(EDT) before closing out pool play against Myrtle Beach at 4 PM(EDT). The tournament consolation and championship games will be held on Saturday.
