Westwood Softball Clobbers Cascade on Monday

Abby Clark of WMS softball

The Westwood Middle School softball team used 10 walks and 7 hits to rout Cascade on Monday night 17 to 3 in Wartrace.  The win improved the Lady Rockets to 9 and 1 on the year and gave Westwood a season sweep over the Lady Champions of Wartrace.

Tied at 1 after 1 inning, Westwood scored 6 runs in the 2nd inning to effectively end the drama.  Leading 9 to 3 entering the 4th inning, Westwood tallied 8 more runs in the top of the 4th to salt away the mercy-rule shortened win.

Abby Clark was the hitting star for the Lady Rockets as she had a triple, a single, 3 walks and 3 RBI.  Kara Beth Patton had a single and a triple and scored twice while Emma Kidder had a double, 3 walks and 3 RBI.  Haidyn Campbell got the complete game victory as she surrendered 3 hits and 3 unearned runs while striking out 8.

Westwood returns home on Tuesday for their final home game of the year.  The Lady Rockets will play host to Huntland in a game that begins at 5:30 PM at Lady Rocket Field.

CCMS Golf Topples North Franklin on Monday

The Coffee County Middle School golf teams hosted North Franklin on Monday at Willowbrook.  The Raiders captured flags in all 4 matches as they cruised to a 9 to 3 win.  Westwood was scheduled to take on South Franklin but that match was rescheduled due to a schedule conflict at South.

For the Raiders, the team of Logan Hale and Cole Fowler captured all 3 flags in their 9 hole match.  Kira Jarrell and Caleb Jarrell won 2 of the 3 flags in their match.  The team of Avery Hill and Zack Tidwell captured 1 flag and the team of Kaleb Jones and Kolby McCormick were awarded 3 flags due to a forfeit.

The linksters from Westwood and Coffee Middle will square off against one another on Tuesday at Old Stone Fort Golf Club.  The shotgun start will tee off at 4 PM.

CHS Track Athletes Battle for State Berths in Multi-Sport Sectional

Sarah Pearson clears 4′ 10″ in the high jump in the 2017 TSSAA state pentathlon at MTSU.

Six athletes from the Coffee County CHS track team competed on Monday in the Sectional Pentathlon/Decathlon Meet at Stewarts Creek.  Each was trying to sew up a spot in the 2018 TSSAA State Track Meet in May.  Sarah Pearson, Chloe Haggard and Jaden Campbell competed for the Lady Raiders in the pentathlon while Raven Weber, Trace Bryant and Dillon Helms took part in the decathlon.

The 5 event pentathlon was contested on Monday and Coffee County did not qualify a Lady Raider for the state meet.  Sarah Pearson, who suffered a torn ACL in the fall, came up 1 place short of an automatic qualifying position.  Pearson, who was looking for her 4th straight trip to the state meet, finished in 4th place.  Her score was 8 points out of 3rd place and she will be one of the favorites to make the field should an alternate be required.  Pearson won the shot put event with a throw of 30’ 3.75”.  Jayden Campbell finished in 10th place and Chloe Haggard came in 18th place.

The first 5 events in the decathlon were competed on Monday and at the halfway point, Trace Bryant leads the Red Raiders as he sits in 7th place.  Dillon Helms is in 26th place and Raven Weber is in 28th place.

The Red Raiders return to Stewarts Creek on Tuesday for the final 5 events.  Left on the schedule are 110M hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put and 1500M run.
