Former Co-Band Director at Thullahoma High School Headed to Prison

Martin Drew McFarlane jail intake photo at the Coffee Co. Jail.

Sentencing for former co-band director at Tullahoma High School Martin Drew McFarlane was held last week in federal court in Chattanooga.
The charge of child pornography against McFarlane carried a minimum sentence of five years and a maximum of 20, along with a fine of up to $250,000 and a mandatory term of five years supervised release.
The charges came after agents from the FBI and investigators from the Tullahoma Police Department found what was described as child pornography on his computer at his residence.
On Dec. 14, 2017 McFarlane appeared before U.S. Magistrate Christopher Steger and entered a plea of guilty to one of two counts of transportation of child pornography through the internet.
Despite the government’s objection, United States District Judge Harry S. Mattice Jr. handed down the five-year sentence and waived the fine.
Following five years in prison, McFarlane will be subject to another five years of supervised release. The conditions of that release include continued mental health treatment, participation in a drug or alcohol abuse testing and treatment program, participation in DNA collection and compliance with sex offender laws. Additionally, McFarlane will be prohibited from owning a firearm.
McFarlane, a 2004 Tullahoma High School graduate, was hired as the co-director of the band program in 2015. McFarlane resigned from his position at the high school the day after his arrest on May 11, 2017.

Don’t Leave Children in Hot Cars

Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves is reminding people to not to leave children inside unattended vehicles. With the temperatures around 90 degrees, leaving children in a vehicle can lead to death. As the temperature inside a vehicle can escalate by 15 degrees in just 10 minutes and with the hot temperatures and high humidity death can come very quickly. Even if you leave the windows rolled down some, the temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly. Please take children in the store or leave them at home as it would be better than death.
A one-year child died in a hot car this week in Nashville, after she had been left in a car seat all day in a pickup truck. The investigation is ongoing.
When temperatures outside exceed 86 degrees F, the internal temperatures of the vehicle can quickly reach 134 to 154 degrees F. Heat stroke may occur when a body temperature passes 104 degrees Fahrenheit. This can overwhelm the brain’s temperature control, causing symptoms such as dizziness, disorientation, agitation, confusion, seizure, and/or death.
On average, 38 children die in hot cars each year from heat-related deaths after being trapped inside motor vehicles. Even the best of parents or caregivers can unknowingly leave a sleeping baby in a car; and the end result can be injury or even death.
Tennessee ranks 8th in the nation in hot car deaths, according to the non-profit Kids and Cars.
In the U.S. this year, seven children have died after being left in hot vehicles, according to the non-profit Kids and Cars. Another three deaths are still pending autopsies.
Anyone seeing children left in a vehicle without the air conditioner running are asked to call 911.

Sounds Walk-Off Dodgers in the Ninth

Steve Lombardozzi’s walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Nashville Sounds to a 3-2 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers in front of 7,105 fans at First Tennessee Park Monday afternoon.

Lombardozzi hit the first pitch he saw from Adam Liberatore down the left field line and off the wall to easily score Jake Smolinski from third. The inning began with a sharp single to left field by Smolinski and continued when Beau Taylor was hit by a Liberatore pitch.

Sheldon Neuse dropped down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third with one out. The Dodgers elected to intentionally walk pinch-hitter Josh Phegley to load the bases for Lombardozzi who delivered Nashville’s fifth walk-off winner of the season.

The Sounds’ offense was stuck in neutral for most of the afternoon. Trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Nashville took advantage of two walks and an error to even the game at 2-2.

Chris Bassitt gave the Sounds a quality start with six solid innings. He allowed two runs on eight hits in his first start back since being optioned by Oakland. He stuck out a season-high eight batters in a no-decision.

The bullpen combination of Josh Lucas and Bobby Wahl kept it a 2-2 game in the late innings. Lucas threw two scoreless innings before turning it over to Wahl who pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to set up the walk-off in the bottom half of the inning.

The fifth and final game of the series is scheduled for Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. Left-hander Eric Jokisch (1-5, 5.01) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Dennis Santana (1-1, 2.45) for the Dodgers. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

Post-Game Notes

  • With today’s 3-2 win, the Sounds improved to 26-24 on the season.
  • Today’s walk-off was the fifth of the season for Nashville. It was the second time Lombardozzi was involved as he scored the winning run on April 26 vs. New Orleans.
  • The Sounds improved to 11-4 in one-run games.
  • Nashville pitcher Chris Bassitt notched his first quality start (6 IP, 8 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 8 K) of the season and the 11th for Sounds pitchers in the month of May.

The 2018 season is the Sounds’ 41st in franchise history and fourth as the Oakland Athletics’ top affiliate. Single-game tickets are available now by calling (615) 690-4487 or by visiting www.nashvillesounds.com.
