Fake Money Showing Up Again in Coffee County
Fake $100 and $20 bills are popping up around Coffee County. The counterfeit bills have been passed at area businesses. The employees did not realize the bills were fake until a bank informed the businesses.
The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department is urging area businesses to be very cautious when accepting cash. Any person that is in the business of money exchange, such as stores, or street vendors should practice some basic precautions. Workers are encouraged to use a marking pen to check if the money is real. Business employees should check both sides of the bill and see if they look right, because sometimes it can be obvious the money is fake.
Some of the $100 fake bills have pink Chinese writing on them.
Contact police if anyone tries to pass the fake bills to you personally or your business.
Tennessee has Highest Average Sales Tax Rate in the Nation
Tennessee has narrowly edged out Louisiana for the top spot with an average state and local combined sales tax rate of 9.46 percent.
That’s according to the latest data available from the nonpartisan, conservative Tax Foundation, which shows Louisiana falls a hair behind at 9.45 percent.
Louisiana previously had the top average combined rate, but the state sales tax slightly declined July 1.
Louisiana’s state sales tax had been slated to decrease from 5 percent to 4 percent. But state lawmakers in their last special session renewed 0.45 percent of the expiring temporary tax to avert steep cuts to college campuses and government-financed programs. The state’s sales tax rate now is 4.45 percent.
Lighting Deaths Up in Tennessee
Lightning deaths are at a 10-year high in Tennessee and make up for 25 percent of deadly lightning strikes nationwide.
The latest victim is Darrell Hoskins.
The Memphis man was mowing the lawn and his family said he didn’t see any bad weather brewing.
The 40-year-old was doing yard work when a lightning bolt hit a nearby tree and struck him in the back of the head.
So far this year, three people have died from lightning strikes in Tennessee. That’s more than all lightning deaths in the past decade combined.
In addition to Hoskins, two other Tennesseans died from lightning strikes in the past two months.
TN Consumers Have New Levels of Protection

Baylie Scott, with the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance, said state lawmakers prioritized consumer rights this session.
“Gov. Haslam’s administration and the General Assembly has done a really great job of enforcing the importance of consumer protection and their emphasis on that,” Scott said; “and I think that this is the last round of that. They really wanted to get this established and in stone.”
The new laws took effect July 1.
While some progress was made, consumer advocates point out that Tennessee still is one of 27 states that allows payday lending, which critics say unfairly targets the poor and working class by charging exceedingly large interest rates.
Another new law prohibits health care prescribers from soliciting their services to victims of an accident or disaster within 30 days of the incident. Scott said it’s important that consumers know their rights and ask for help when they need it.
“If anybody thinks they have been a victim of fraud or needs consumer tips or advice, they can definitely call our Consumer Affairs division, or visit tn.gov/consumer,” he said.
This summer, the TDCI also is warning against moving scams as people move in and out of Tennessee during the summer months. Potential tenants are advised to carefully review leases and see properties in person. Experts remind landlords about the importance of background and credit checks when choosing a tenant.

Preds Sign Goaltender Juuse Saros to Three-Year Contract
Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced Monday that the team has signed restricted free-agent goaltender Juuse Saros to a three-year, $4.5 million contract. Saros will make $1.5 million in each of the three seasons.
Saros, who is 23 , was named to the NHL’s All-Rookie Team after posting an 11-5-7 record with a 2.44 goals-against average, .925 save percentage and three shutouts in 2017-18. The 5-foot-11 goaltender closed out the regular season with the third-best save percentage in franchise history, trailing only Pekka Rinne’s .927 in 2017-18 and .930 in 2010-11. From Nov. 4 to the end of the regular season, Saros led NHL goaltenders in save percentage (.935) and was fourth in goals-against average (2.19). He set the Predators record for most saves in a shutout with 46 on Dec. 14 at Edmonton and became the first goalie in team history to tally multiple 40-plus save shutouts in the same season. Saros started the second half of all 11 of Nashville’s back-to-backs this season and went 8-1-2, with five of those victories coming on the road. He appeared in four playoff games for the Predators last season, allowing only two goals on 42 shots faced for a 1.05 goals-against average and .952 save percentage.
Originally a fourth-round (99th overall) pick by the Predators in the 2013 NHL Draft, Saros owns a 21-14-10 record, 2.42 goals-against average, .923 save percentage and four shutouts in 48 NHL games. The Forssa, Finland, native teamed up with Rinne to post the NHL’s best save percentage (.923) and second-best goals against average (2.49) in 2017-18, helping the Predators claim the Presidents’ Trophy for the first time in franchise history. Saros has appeared in six career postseason games with the Preds – including two in the 2017 Stanley Cup Final – and has posted a 1.76 goals-against average, allowing five goals on 59 shots against.
