Samuel Prater led the Red Raiders with a 3 under par round of 67.  Austin Farris, Josh Perry and Matthew Hale all shot an 8 over 78.  Chase Hancock rounded out the Raiders scoring with a 91.  Cookeville’s Jared Funderburke had the low round on the day with a 4 under 66.

Five Practices, Five Standouts for Titans so Far in Training Camp

by Jim Wyatt, TitansOnline.com

Five practices down, and plenty more to go for the Titans in training camp.

On Tuesday, players are getting a day off in the middle of the grind.

And I’m recognizing the five players who’ve stood out the most to me so far…

Cornerback Malcolm Butler

In my mind, Butler has been the star of camp so far. He’s been a tone-setter at the start of practices, hauling in interceptions and talking trash. Just minutes into the start of Day One, Butler outwrestled receiver Corey Davis for the football in a one-on-one drill, and punted it into the air. Moments earlier he was calling for Davis, and yelling out loud: “Let me show you how I earn my money!” Butler hasn’t been perfect – he’s given up some plays as well. But he has at least three picks so far in camp, and he’s making good on his own words: “A play a day keeps the coach away.”

Left tackle Taylor Lewan

With linebacker Brian Orakpo out, I’ve been watching a lot of rookie edge rusher Harold Landry early in camp – which means I’ve been watching a lot of Lewan. Landry has been lined up across from Lewan a bunch, and the veteran left tackle has been on his game early. Lewan has not only looked good, he’s also been vocal, and he’s been seen giving tips to Landry after plays. And heck, the guy killed the “Boss Hogg” act after getting his new contract, with his white suit, Dukes of Hazzard theme music, and cigar.

Running back Derrick Henry

Henry showed up to training camp a few pounds heavier — and that was by design. He added more muscle to his 6-foot-3 frame, which carries in the 250-pound range. Henry has looked good running the football. He’s been quick to hit the hole. He’s also caught the ball well. On one swing pass a few days ago, he caught a low pass with his fingertips just inches from the ground.

Defensive lineman Jurrell Casey

The defensive line has provided plenty of push in practices, and every play it seems like Casey is busting into the backfield. A three-time Pro Bowler, Casey has been active and very disruptive in run defense and also getting after the quarterback. He looks sturdier than he did after he shed some weight heading into last season, and it’s shown with his play on the field.

Receiver Taywan Taylor

Corey Davis has been good. Darius Jennings has been consistent. Tajae Sharpe looks stronger, and seems to be finding his groove. But second-year receiver Taywan Taylor has really emerged of late, catching passes in the middle of the field, and also deep downfield. He’s made tough catches in tight coverage, and also shown off his blazing speed. Heading into Year 2, it’s looking like he could be a big factor this fall.

Fake Money Leads to Woman’s Arrest

On Friday July 27th 2018, Tullahoma Police Officer Rocky Ruehling responded to a call at Sonic on North Jackson Street in reference to a person attempting to pay with a counterfeit 100 dollar bill. A description of the female and the vehicle she was driving was given to the officer. A short time later officers located the woman driving a vehicle matching the description. Upon making a traffic stop the woman identified as Brandi Danielle Frazier age 31 of Locust Fort, Alabama admitted to being at the Sonic and admitted that she tried to use the bill but said she did not know it was fake.
Officers then allegedly observed in plain sight a small marijuana cigarette in the ash tray. Officers then received permission to search the vehicle and reportedly found in the floorboard next to the driver seat a small bag of white residue believed to be crack cocaine. The arrest warrant indicates that officers found several needles with a brown residue and a marijuana pipe. A check of the Frazier’s driving privilege revealed she was driving on a revoked license.
Tullahoma Officer Rocky Ruehling charged Frazier with criminal simulation, schedule II and VI drug violations, unlawful drug paraphernalia uses and activities. Bond was set at $10,000 and she is set to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court on August 23, 2018.

Tennessee General Assembly will have Lots of New Faces

Tennessee State Capital

More than two dozen state lawmakers are not running for re-election and that means new faces are running for the Tennessee General Assembly.
Eighteen Republican and seven Democratic incumbents in the House won’t be running again. They include Republican Speaker Beth Harwell of Nashville, a gubernatorial candidate. The 47th district which includes all of Coffee County and a portion of Warren County is represented Republican Judd Matheny from Tullahoma. He is not seeking re-election but instead choosing to run for 6th district United States Congress.
The senators not seeking re-election are Democrats Lee Harris of Memphis and Thelma Harper of Nashville. Republican Bill Ketron of Murfreesboro has also decided to not run for again for his seat. Ketron is running for Rutherford County Mayor.
The primary, county general and city elections are Thursday with poles opening in Coffee County at 8am and closing at 7pm. Live election coverage starts at 7pm on Thunder Radio.

Scam Alert!

Some citizens of Coffee County are being hit with a new scam coming out of from Jamaica. These are mainly telemarketing schemes.
In a typical call, the scammer will pretend to be with Publishers Clearing House or a lottery, telling victims that they have won several million dollars, but warning them to keep it a secret.
While the victims are contemplating the great things, they could do for their friends, families and communities, the callers also note that money must be sent in advance to cover taxes owed to the IRS, insurance or some other made up reason. If victims do send the money, there are asked for additional cash.
Jamaican scammers make as many as 30,000 telephone calls each day to the United States telling people that they have won a non-existent prize.
A female victim received a call from an 876 area code with a Jamaican man saying she had won money from Publishers Clearing House. Warning: Publishers Clearing House never charges if you win.
Coffee County Sheriff Steve Graves say that if you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House and are asked to send money, pay a fee or pre-pay taxes to enter, collect or claim a sweepstakes prize, DON’T BE FOOLED: IT’S A SCAM! You have not heard from the “real” Publishers Clearing House. The call you received was most likely from a fraudulent sweepstakes scam operation.
Sheriff Graves added that if you receive a call like this, please simply hang-up.

Sounds Earn Comeback Win With Late-Inning Magic

The Nashville Sounds scored three runs in the ninth and four runs in the 11th to cap a dramatic come-from-behind 11-8 win over the Salt Lake Bees Monday night at Smith’s Ballpark.

The four-hour, 28-minute marathon featured 13 pitchers, 31 hits, 15 walks and saw the two teams combine to go 17-for-50 with runners in scoring position.

Nashville trailed 5-0 early as Salt Lake chased starter Daniel Mengden in the bottom of the first inning after four runs and 41 pitches. Six Nashville relievers combined to limit the Bees to four runs over the next 10-plus innings to keep the Sounds alive.

The comeback began in the third when Beau Taylor knocked in Melvin Mercedes with a run-scoring single. In the fifth, hits from Ramon Laureano, Taylor and Steve Lombardozzi helped Nashville put up three runs to trim the deficit to 5-4.

Salt Lake scored single runs in the home half of the fifth and seventh to build a 7-4 lead.

The late-inning heroics came with two outs in the ninth for the Sounds. Sheldon Neuse’s two-out single kept the game alive and extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

Lombardozzi drew a walk and Jorge Mateo’s infield single loaded the bases for Brett Vertigan. The right-fielder rifled a line drive down the right field line, clearing the bases with a double to draw the game even at 7-7.

With the game still tied at 7-7 in the top of the 11th, catcher Beau Taylor gave the Sounds their first lead of the night with a run-scoring triple. The inning continued with two walks and two more hits. Lombardozzi knocked in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly, Vertigan drove in his fourth run of the night with a single and Mercedes made it an 11-7 game with a run-scoring base hit.

Jeremy Bleich worked the bottom of the 11th and gave up a sacrifice fly but shut down any comeback hopes for Salt Lake. Liam Hendriks worked two scoreless innings and earned his second win of the season.

Laureano, Taylor, Vertigan and Mercedes had multi-hit games as the Sounds pounded out 15 hits in the win.

The Sounds return home to First Tennessee Park following a league off day Tuesday. Left-hander Eric Jokisch (3-9, 4.69) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Cy Sneed (9-5, 3.51) for the Fresno Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
