Man Hits House with Stolen Car–Later Arrested

Brian Lee Cleckler

On Sunday, (August 5th, 2018) Manchester Police Officer Daniel Ray was on patrol on Hwy 53 when he attempted to stop a vehicle for a traffic violation. The arrest warrant sates that the driver began to drive erratically, allegedly attempting to evade the officer. The male driver turned onto Mayfield Street and turned quickly into a drive way striking the home with the vehicle. The man jumped from the vehicle and refused orders from the officer to stop.
Officers checked on the man’s passenger and then began a foot chase for the subject. The man ran for several minutes before Officer Ray caught up with him. The warrant says that the man allegedly attempted to tackle the officer and knock him to the ground. Ray wrestled with the subject before finally getting the man in custody.
Ray then found lying next to the man, a bottle of a white crystal substance believed to be methamphetamine weighing approximately 4 grams.
The vehicle that the man identified as Brian Lee Cleckler age 39 of J.D. Road, Hillsboro was driving was reported stolen out of Chattanooga. A 12-gauge shotgun was also found in the vehicle, Cleckler is a convicted felon.
Officer Ray charged Cleckler with Illegal possession of a weapon, Schedule II drug violation, Assault, Resisting Arrest, Evading Arrest, Reckless Endangerment, Reckless Driving and Resisting Stop, Halt, Frisk. His bond was set at $75,000 and his court date is August 28, 2018.

Gas Prices Rise and Fall Last Week

Prices at the gas pump increased last week yet are pointing lower again.
Gas prices in Tennessee increased 4 cents during the past week. Sunday’s state average of $2.65 was 4 cents more than a month ago and 51 cents more than a year ago.
Gas prices in July averaged $2.61 per gallon in Tennessee. That was the highest monthly average for July since 2014.
AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said prices at the pump have pinballed around this summer, but fortunately have remained within a 20-cent range. He said the limited swings in pump prices and a strong economy has led to one of the biggest driving summers in history.
The national average price of a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.86, the same as a month ago and 52 cents higher than a year ago.
The low price in Coffee County as of Tuesday afternoon was in Manchester at $2.62 per gallon and in Tullahoma it was $2.64.

National Farmers Market Week is this Week

Tennesseans love their farmers markets, and the proof is in their growth.
In 2000, fewer than 50 farmers markets were listed with the Tennessee Department of Agriculture’s Pick Tennessee Products program. By 2014, Tennessee had 154 farmers markets, ranking first in the nation in growth of farmers markets, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
With 168 active farmers markets listed on Pick Tennessee’s website and mobile app in 2018, it is easy to find local events celebrating this week’s National Farmers Market Week.
Every farmers market is unique, with its own range of farmers, customer preferences, and products, representing its community in an especially nimble way. The modern farmers market has essentially become a community hub. Larger markets often host family-focused seasonal festivals, and even hip night markets complete with wine or beer tastings.
Whatever your market’s size, providing fresh, locally produced foods and other farm-direct products is its core purpose.
A list of tips for getting the most out of your local market, as well as a farm-measures-to-kitchen conversion calculator, are available at www.picktnproducts.org.
Pick Tennessee is the free service of Tennessee Department of Agriculture developed to connect consumers to Tennessee farmers, farmers markets, farm products, and activities, plus food and farm products grown or made in Tennessee.

Raider Golf Captures 2nd Place in Cookeville Tournament

Members of the Red Raider golf team after Monday’s tournament at Cookeville

Competing in their 3rd tournament of the year, the CHS golf team was in Cookeville on Monday for the Early Bird Invitational.  Hosted by Cookeville High, the Early Bird features several top teams from all over the mid-state area.  The Red Raiders outshot Tullahoma in a 2 hole playoff to capture 2nd place in the 15 team tournament.  Cookeville shot 295 to win the tournament beating Coffee County by 7 strokes.

Samuel Prater led the way for the Raiders as he shot a 3 over par 73.  Austin Farris and Matthew Hale each shot a 74.  Josh Perry carded an 81 for Coffee County as they ran their record to 30 and 2 on the year.  Coach Mike Ray was pleased with his team following the tournament. “I’m proud of our effort today but we can still play better.  It was good getting a little bit of playoff type experience under our belt; hopefully if we have to get in that situation later in the year we will be prepared.”

The Raider golfers will host their first home match of the year on Tuesday.  Coffee County will welcome old rival Warren County and district foe Shelbyville to Willowbrook.  The 9 hole match will get underway at 4 PM and the public is invited to attend.

Davis Green Signs Baseball Scholarship with Cumberland University

Davis Green of CHS baseball(file photo)

Former Coffee County CHS pitcher Davis Green has signed a letter of intent to attend Cumberland University on a baseball scholarship.  Green, a 2017 graduate of the Red Raider baseball team for coach David Martin, will attend the Lebanon, Tennessee university after a year away from the game of baseball.   Green was a standout pitcher for the Red Raiders in his junior and senior years but did not sign a college scholarship following graduation.

After missing the game, Green began working out in Murfreesboro with pitching coach Tracy King.  Coach King helped Davis land a spot on the Mt. Juliet Riverdogs summer baseball team this summer.  While pitching with the Riverdogs, Green was coached by an assistant coach from Cumberland.  Cumberland head coach Woody Hunt came to watch Davis pitch and offered him the chance to achieve his team of pitching in college.

Cumberland is a member of the Mid-South Conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).  Cumberland is coached by Woody Hunt who has been the coach at Cumberland for 37 years compiling over 1,500 wins.  The Phoenix have been to the NAIA World Series 12 times and captured 3 national championships with the last coming in 2014.
