8/14/18–Robert James Miller

Robert James Miller, passed this life on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at his
residence at the age of 72 years. Funeral Services are scheduled for
Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at 11 AM at Daves-Culbertson Funeral Home with
burial to follow at Maplewood Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be
Monday, August 13 from 5 – 8 PM

A native of Oak Park, IL, he was the son of the late Hubert and Dorothy
Edgerton Miller. He attended the New Creation Church in Tullahoma and
loved people. He enjoyed meeting new people and making new friends. He
especially loved to “pick on” people and make people laugh. He also
enjoyed
going shopping.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Dennis
Neally and John Miller.

He is survived by sons, Donovan and Jason Miller; daughter, Brandy Miller;
brothers, Wayne Neally of Tullahoma and Joseph Miller of Robbins, IL and
stepmother, Sandy Miller of Chicago Heights, IL.

8/10/18–JoAnne Boatwright

JoAnne Boatwright of Tullahoma, passed this life on Tuesday, August 7, 2018
at her residence at the age of 79 years. No services are scheduled.

A native of Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Wesley and
Wilda Herdman Doyle. She loved watching her husband and son race stock cars
and even raced in several powder puff races. She enjoyed doing crafts and
collecting Fiesta Ware dishes.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Doug
Doyle.

She is survived by son, Martin “Boaty” Boatwright of Tullahoma; daughter,
Deborah A. Penniman and her husband, Chuck of Fruitland Park, FL; brother,
Chuck Doyle and his wife, Joyce of Eustis, FL and sisters, Claudia
Standridge and her husband, Bill of Leesburg, FL and Patricia Herndon and
her husband, Donald of Greenville, SC.

8/11/18–James William Curtis

James William Curtis of Lynchburg, passed this life on Tuesday, August 7,
2018 at his residence at the age of 52 years. Funeral Services are
scheduled for 2 PM on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Daves-Culbertson Funeral
Home with burial to follow at Hurricane Cemetery. The family will receive
friends on Friday, August 10 from 5-8 PM.

A native of Franklin County, he was the son of the late Charlie G. Curtis
and Reba M. Payne Denton of Winchester. He enjoyed fishing, hunting,
listening to gospel music and watching NASCAR races. His favorite times
were spent with his grandchildren and visiting other family members.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his stepfather,
Harold Denton and father-in-law, Nathan Vaughn Sr.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Vaughn Curtis of Lynchburg; mother, Reba
Denton of Winchester; stepmother, Shirley Curtis of Estill Springs; son,
Terry Curtis Sr and his wife, Kimberly of Lynchburg; daughter Sherry Arnold
and her husband, Freddie of Elora, TN; mother-in-law, Emily Vaughn of
Lynchburg; brothers, Tommy Curtis of Cowan, James Brewer and his wife,
Michelle of Estill Springs and Gary Brewer of Estill Springs; sister, Karen
Shetters and her husband, Freddie of Decherd; four grandchildren, Terry
Curtis Jr, Piper Curtis, Brooklyn Arnold and Dominic “Charlie” Curtis and
several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews.

CCMS Soccer Hosts Fund Raising Play Day

The Coffee County Middle School soccer team will be hosting their 14th Annual “Kickin’ Cancer Soccer Play Day Scrimmage on Saturday at CCMS.  The Lady Raiders will welcome varsity and JV teams from 6 different middle Tennessee counties for the daylong event.  Games are set to get underway at 9 AM and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a local cancer charity.  As an added bonus, the Lady Raiders will don pink jerseys and play with a pink ball.

Coffee County will play varsity games at 10:40 and 3:20.  The JV Lady Raiders will play at 9:00 AM and 1:40.  Everyone is encouraged to bring your lawn chair and come out to the Coffee County Middle School to enjoy some good soccer and donate to a worthy cause.   A portion of the proceeds from the tournament will go to benefit the Middle Tennessee Breast Cancer Coalition.

Manchester Youth Football League Releases Schedule

The Manchester Youth Football League will get their season underway on Saturday as all 3 teams will travel to Lewisburg to take part in the Southern Middle Tennessee Youth Football Association (SMTYFA) jamboree.   The jamboree kicks off an exciting 2018 season for the Manchester Youth Football League.  The league will open the regular season on Saturday, August 18th in Pulaski.  After a trip to Lynchburg on August 25th, the Raider team will host their very first home games at Carden-Jarrell Field on September 8th.  The Manchester Raiders will play host to Shelbyville beginning with the Division 1 game at 2 PM.  For the 3rd straight year, Darren Strickland, the 2016 Titans Junior Broadcaster of the year will serve as the public address announcer for the MYFL Raiders.  To get more information about Manchester Youth Football, visit their website at: https://www.myflraiders.com/

For the 3rd consecutive year, the Ryan Sulkowski Show returns to Thunder Radio.  Starring Coffee County Red Raider head football coach Ryan Sulkowski, the show will be broadcast live each Wednesday night at 6 PM from West Main Brick Oven in Downtown Manchester.  The hour-long show will recap the previous week’s game, preview the upcoming opponent, bring you player and coach features and keep you in the know about all the happenings of Red Raider football.  Fans and foes alike are encouraged to come on out to West Main for dinner and enjoy the all the fun.

Stolen Truck Leads to South Carolina Man’s Arrest

On Monday afternoon at approximately 12:15 pm on I-24 in Coffee County, Tennessee Highway Patrolman Donnie Clark received a “Be on the Lookout” for a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on the interstate. Trooper Clark observed the vehicle as the “BOLO” was given out and immediately attempted to make a traffic stop at the 111-mile marker. The subject refused to stop and continued at a high rate of speed only to allegedly slam on the brakes causing Trooper Clark to make contact with the stolen vehicle. The subject went off the interstate at the 110-exit ramp onto Hwy 53 and turned left onto Paradise Street. Trooper Clark maintained visual of the stolen vehicle as it traveled in a reckless manner through residents’ yards damaging multiple fences. He traveled off-road through soybean fields apparently damaging the crops in an attempt to get away. Trooper Clark along with numerous Coffee County deputies were able to surround the vehicle in a field off the Old Woodbury Hwy where Trooper Clark’s SUV was rammed, disabling his patrol unit and the suspect then gave up and was taken into custody.
The vehicle was confirmed stolen from Antioch TN. It was a 2015 Ford F-250 4×4 valued at approximately $40,000.
Marcus Lee Brown age 24 of Greer, SC was arrested and charged with Theft of Property and Evading Arrest. Bond for Brown was set at $60,000 and he is set at to appear in Coffee County General Sessions Court on August 28, 2018.

Seven Arrested for Cockfighting in Wartrace

What’s being said is the largest event of this type was busted by police in Bedford County on Saturday.
Police initially responded to a farm on Railroad Road in Wartrace around midnight after they received a call about a “rowdy” crowd. Police found a well-lit ring inside the barn, as well as cockfighting paraphernalia and several dead birds in garbage cans.
Most of the people took off running through the woods. However, 7 people were arrested for cockfighting including: Luis Cervantes, 32, of Shelbyville; Bravo Mojica, 41, of Shelbyville; Christian Sarabia, 37, of South Jackson Street, Tullahoma; Gustavo Moreno, 41, of Shelbyville; Elias Najera, 58, of McMinnville; Jeffrey Ryan, 32, of Quebeck, Tennessee; Walter Conrad, 51, of Nashville; and Giyemlo Savino, 39, of Baxter.
Officials said more than 500 various types and game birds and chickens were on the farm.
The property is quarantined, and all chickens will remain there until the Tennessee Department of Agriculture can do some testing for disease.

Stabbing in Estill Springs

Two people were taken to hospitals after a reported stabbing incident Wednesday afternoon in Estill Springs. Estill Springs Police and the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to Tanglewood Trail in Estill Springs about 2:15 p.m. A female had apparently been stabbed twice, once each in the stomach and in the left hand. She was taken to the hospital in Winchester for treatment.
A male suspect allegedly attempted to commit suicide was taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
No other information was available at news time.

Volunteer Fire Departments can apply for Grants

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture Division of Forestry is accepting grant applications for the 2018-19 Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) program from now until Sept. 14, 2018.
Volunteer fire departments (VFDs) serving communities with populations of 10,000 or less are eligible for this 50% reimbursement grant. Grants will be awarded for qualifying purchases up to $6,000. Last year, 115 VFDs received grants for a total amount of $264,368.
Examples of qualifying purchases include personal protective equipment, firefighting hand tools, communications equipment, parts and supplies for engines, and training materials.
“All areas in Tennessee are prone to wildland fire,” State Forester David Arnold said. “We are proud to be able to support these firefighters who serve the rural areas that rely on volunteers for fire assistance.”
Applications must be submitted to the area’s Assistant District Forester. To qualify to apply, volunteer fire departments must have a current memorandum of understanding with the Division of Forestry.
