Coffee County Soccer Fights to Draw with Lincoln County on Tuesday

Morgan Henley of CHS soccer

The Coffee County CHS soccer team opened their district slate on Tuesday when they traveled to Fayetteville to take on Lincoln County.  Coming off a 7 goal performance on Monday, the Lady Raiders were slow getting their offense on track against the talented Lady Falcons.  Coffee County had to rally with 2 goals in the 2nd half to draw with Lincoln County at 2

Lincoln County scored goals in the 10th and 20th minutes to build a 2 nil lead at intermission.  Not to be deterred, the Lady Raiders got their first mark in the 60th minute when Allie Amado pushed a Morgan Henley pass into the Falcon net.  In the 68th minute, Reyna Flores pounced on a deflected shot in front of the net for the equalizer.  Coffee County’s defense held Lincoln County scoreless in the final half

The Lady Raiders return home on Thursday night as they will tangle with district rival Franklin County.  That match will get underway at 7 PM at the Raider Soccer Field.

The Red Raider football team of Coffee County Middle School welcomed Lake Forest Middle out of Cleveland to Manchester on Tuesday night.  The Raider defense did a magnificent job holding the vaunted Bruins offense to 76 yards of total offense.  Unfortunately, 3 Raider turnovers spelled doom for Coffee Middle as they fell 20 to 12.

Trailing 14 to 12 at the half, it appeared the Raiders were driving for the possible winning score as the 2 teams went into the 4th quarter.  But the Bruins intercepted a Caleb Boothe pass and returned it 85 yards for a touchdown to squash the upset bid.  The Raiders finished the game with 117 yards of total offense but were unable to convert either of the 2 Lake Forest turnovers into points.

Trevor Martin led the Raiders in total yards as he rushed 16 times for 76 yards including a 1 yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter to give Coffee Middle a 6 to 0 lead.  Elijah Clemmons scored the other Raider touchdown as he raced 28 yards for a score.  Clemmons finished with 29 yards on 11 carries.  Ethan Hargrove ran a fake punt for 11 yards and a 1st down in the 3rd quarter and caught 1 pass for 8 yards.

Coffee Middle will hit the road next week as they travel to Evensville, TN to take on Rhea County Middle.   That game will kick off at 7 PM Eastern, 6 PM Central Time.

Sounds Match Franchise Record With 15th Straight Win

Franklin Barreto homered and Dustin Fowler added three hits as the Nashville Sounds topped the Round Rock Express, 8-4, Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park to extend their winning streak to 15 games. The 15-game streak matches a franchise record set during the 1999 season.

Nashville’s winning streak started on July 29 in Salt Lake City with a 9-5 win over the Bees. They swept their last homestand – a seven-game stretch against Fresno and Sacramento – and swept Colorado Springs on the road before returning home. The Sounds have outscored their opponents 89-48 during the 15-game stretch.

Round Rock jumped out to a fast start in the first inning and put up three runs against Nashville starter Frankie Montas. Just like the homestand opener Monday night, the Sounds weren’t fazed and had a comeback in store.

Nashville answered immediately with three runs of their own in the home half of the inning. Anthony Garcia picked up his team-leading 80th RBI of the season and Sheldon Neuse drove in a run with a base hit.

The Sounds took the lead for good in the second when Jorge Mateo sparked a rally with his 14th triple of the season. Boog Powell followed with a run-scoring groundout to give Nashville a 4-3 lead.

In the fifth, Fowler started another rally with a leadoff single. Garcia walked and Barreto drove in his first run of the night with a single down the left-field line. Three batters later, BJ Boyd doubled to deep center field, driving in two more runs to make it 7-3.

Montas settled in and retired 14 straight batters at one point. The bullpen tandem of Carlos Ramirez and Danny Coulombe combined to throw 3 2/3 shutout innings in relief.

Barreto put a stamp on the 15th win in a row with a booming solo homer in the bottom of the seventh. He finished the game 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI while Fowler finished 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for Wednesday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Chris Bassitt (5-4, 4.48) starts for the Sounds against right-hander Chris Rowley (0-3, 5.40) for the Express. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Post-Game Notes

  • Jorge Mateo’s triple in the second inning was his 14th of the season. His 14 triples is tied for second-most in a single season.

Haslam Announces Completion of Statewide School Safety Assessment almost Complete

Gov. Bill Haslam

Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced Tuesday the first-ever statewide assessment of school facilities and safety procedures will be fully completed by the end of August, with unprecedented school security funding now available to school districts to implement identified school security and safety needs.
To date, 1,796 schools – or about 99 percent of Tennessee’s public schools – have completed the security assessment with the remaining 1 percent set for completion by August 31.
Additionally, the Department of Safety and Homeland Security is working to secure a developer to complete a statewide school safety mobile application. The application will be used by students, faculty, and staff to anonymously report concerning or suspicious behavior to local law enforcement and school officials. In tandem, the Department of Education is developing a complementary training program that will prepare school officials to properly assess and respond to reported threats.
The governor’s fiscal year 2019 budget, passed by the General Assembly, includes $25 million in one-time funding for schools to address vulnerabilities and risks, and $10 million in recurring grant funding for ongoing safety and prevention programs. Funding may be used for a variety of enhancements such as entry to and exit from schools, training and availability of school resource officers, and in-school mental health resources for students.
