Coffee County Middle School Soccer Defeats Westwood on Monday Night

Ellie Fann of CCMS soccer

In the battle of backyard rivals, the Coffee County Middle School and Westwood Middle School soccer teams met at the Raider Academy on Monday night.  In a match you heard here on Thunder Radio, Coffee Middle used 4 first half goals to roll to a 7 to 1 win over the young Lady Rockets.

Coffee Middle got on the board in the 3rd minute on a goal from Katie Cotton.  A loose ball in front of the Westwood goal inadvertently landed in the back of the net to give the Lady Raiders a 2 nil lead due to the own goal.  Coffee Middle’s Emma Rhoton added a goal off an assist from Brittney Spencer in the 23rd minute and Spencer added an unassisted goal in the 26th minute to make the score 4 nil at the half.

Princess Penaloza of Westwood soccer

In the second half, Cotton added her second goal off an assist from Lillie Meeks.  Hannah Creal added the Lady Raiders 6th goal in the 45th minute before Ellie Fann notched Coffee County’s 6th goal in the 52nd minute.  Cotton assisted on each of the last 2 goals.  Westwood’s Princess Penaloza scored for Westwood in the 53rd minute off an assist from Adriana Basurto to avoid the shutout.  Keeper Sydney Gilley finished with 1 save for Coffee County while Holland Willoughby of Westwood finished with 8 saves.

Monday’s match was the final regular season game for each team.  Westwood soccer begins play in the CTSC conference tournament later this week.  Coffee Middle will be in the CTS JV tournament on Saturday and begin play in the CTC tournament next week.

Motlow Soccer Prepares for Mississippi Trip After 3-3 Tie with Itawamba

Kristen Heath, a redshirt freshman from Wartrace, scored two goals Saturday to help the Motlow State Lady Bucks earn a 3-3 tie with Itawamba Community College in a contest played at Franklin County High School in Winchester. Heath now has seven points on the season with three goals and one assist

The Motlow Lady Bucks scored three goals within a 14-minute span in the second half, including two by Kristen Heath, and held off powerful Itawamba (MS) Community College in extra time to earn a 3-3 tie Saturday afternoon at Franklin County High School in Winchester.

The Lady Bucks (3-2-2) will travel to Meridian, Mississippi, this weekend for a pair of contests, facing the host team Friday at 3 p.m. before quickly turning around and playing Hinds Community College on the same field Saturday at noon. Motlow’s next home game is Oct. 5, when they host TCCAA rival Dyersburg State at 4:30 p.m. at Smyrna High School.

Despite playing two extra 10-minute periods, Motlow and Itawamba could not break the 3-3 deadlock. Both teams had opportunities to score but could not put the ball in the net. Itawamba entered the game with a 5-1 overall record, including wins over TCCAA teams Dyersburg State and Southwest Tennessee.

The visitors got on the scoreboard first with three minutes remaining in the first half when Grace Joyce scored on an assist from Halle Moore, giving Itawamba a 1-0 lead after the first 45 minutes.

Motlow was the aggressor coming out of the intermission. April Gillespie, a freshman from Madison, Ala., tied the score with a goal at the 50-minute mark with an assist from Keely Smith. Heath then put in two goals within nine minutes of each other, the first at the 55-minute mark on an assist from Gillespie, and the second at 64 minutes with an assist from Rebekah Duross.

Despite being down 3-1, Itawamba fought back with Sarah Whitt scoring at the 77-minute mark and Cynthia Betancourt tying the game with a goal at 82 minutes.

Heath had four shots for the Lady Bucks, while Paige Loveless and Kayla Moultry each notched three. The Lady Bucks had 20 shots as a team, one more than Itawamba, with each team logging two corner kicks. Manchester freshman Ashley Woods went the distance at keeper, saving seven shots on goal.
