TWRA HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE

Coffee County Wildlife Officer, Tim Hancock with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency will be teaching a Hunter Education Course at the Coffee County Central High School Auditorium on October 8th, 9th 11th and 12th from 6-9 p.m. Students must be at least 9 years old on the first night to become certified for the course. Students also need to register online for the course at tnwildlife.org prior to attending. The course is free and students must attend each night. State law requires that anyone born on or after January 1st, 1969 must successfully complete a Hunter Education course before hunting in the State of Tennessee. This will be the only Hunter Education Course held in Coffee County this year by TWRA.

9/27/18 — Eleanor Theresa Lewis

ELEANOR THERESA LEWIS, age 74, of Winchester, Tenn., departed this life on Sunday, Sept. 23, 2018, at her residence following an extended illness. Theresa was born on December 23, 1943, in Tullahoma, Tenn., to Mary Crunk Travis and the late Henry Travis. Theresa was disabled. She is a member of the Marble Plains Baptist Church. Ms. Lewis enjoyed going to Church. She also enjoyed painting and doing crafts. She was known by all who knew her how she loved to sing and dance around, she was a big fan of Patsy Cline and knew almost all of her songs.

She was preceeded in death by her husband, Jack B. Lewis and Maternal grandparents, Clyde and Edna Crunk. She is survived by her mother, Mary Tucker of Tullahoma, several cousins and many friends at New Life in Winchester.

Visitation for Theresa will be held from 10:00 A.M. Thursday, September 27, 2018, until Service time at 11:00, in the Chapel of Grant Funeral Services with Bro. Ray Gardner officiating.

Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens in Tullahoma, where she will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Jack.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to New Life, 702 Hundred Oaks Street, Winchester, TN 37398.

Coffee County Golf in the Hunt After 1st Day of State Tournament

Austin Farris tees off on the 10th tee to begin the TSSAA State Tournament on Tuesday

The rains held off on Tuesday as the Red Raider golf team opened play in the TSSAA State Tournament at Willowbrook.  After starting on the always tough back 9, the Red Raiders charged up the leaderboard on the front nine to climb to a 3rd place finish after the first day of play.  Individually, Austin Farris fired an even par 72 to end the day in a 3rd place tie.

As a team, the Raiders fired a 1st day score of 309.  The Raiders trail 1st place Science Hill who fired a 291.  Farragut is in second place, 5 strokes ahead of Coffee County.

Individually, Austin Farris had 2 birdies on the round as he finished with a 72.  Samuel Prater also had a pair of birdies has he carded a 76.  Matthew Hale finished his round with 2 birdies and a score of 78.  Josh Perry shot an 83 and Logan Hale finished with a 95 to round out the Raiders scoring.

The Red Raiders will tee off in 5 straight foursomes beginning on the 1st tee on Wednesday.  Freshman Logan Hale will tee off first for the Raiders as opens play at 8 AM.  Josh Perry will go off at 8:10 while senior Matthew Hale follows him at 8:20.   Senior Samuel Prater is in the 4th group that will tee off at 8:30 while senior Austin Farris starts his round at 8:40 AM.

Spectators are welcome to attend the state tournament at Willowbrook and admission each round is $8 per person.  A select number of golf carts will be available to rent for spectators who meet ADA requirements with prior approval.   You can find a link to live scoring for the event at:  http://golf.tssaa.org/teamplayers.cfm?id=20181202

 

Coffee County Volleyball Claims Senior Night Win over Franklin County

Hosting district foe Franklin County for Senior Night, the Coffee County volleyball needed a win to gain some momentum going into the final week of the regular season.  The Lady Raiders honored seniors Abigail Layne and Brianna Gawrys before the match as the 2 Lady Raider seniors.  Then Coffee County commenced to putting away Franklin County in straight sets, 25-22, 25-10 and 25-19.

Keri Munn led the Lady Raiders in kills with 10 and Lexi Bryan added 8 kills.  Keelie Hillis led the Lady Raiders in aces with 5.  Munn and Amanda Mukai added 4 aces as Coffee County finished with 18.  Senior Abigail Layne led Coffee County with 16 assists.  Mukai and Hillis each finished with 3 digs.

Coffee County is back at home on Wednesday night when they play host to Shelbyville.  First serve is set for 6:30 PM.  Coffee County closes out the regular season on the road on Thursday when they travel to Sparta to take on White County.  Coach Andrew Taylor will be a guest on Saturday’s Coffee Coaches Show to talk about the season and give us an update on the district tournament which will be held in Shelbyville.

Coffee County Middle School Football Has Tuesday Game Cancelled

The 2018 CCMS Raider football player and cheerleaders are honored in the rain under ominous skies with their parents on Tuesday night.

The Coffee County Middle School football team’s 8th Grade Night game with White County was cancelled last night as lightning and storms had pushed the start back past 8 PM.  Before the game, and the first lightning delay, 30 Raider 8th grade players and cheerleaders were recognized.  The Red Raiders finished the year winning 3 of their last 4 games.

Coffee County Middle School Volleyball Falls in Regular Season Finale

The Coffee County Middle School volleyball team closed out the regular season on Monday night as they played host to North Franklin.  After a hard fought first set, North rallied to win the match in 2 sets.  Coffee County fell by set scores of 20-25 and 8-25.

The Lady Raiders will open the CTC Tournament on Thursday night when they take on Warren County at 7 PM at Harris Middle School.  The CTC Tournament will conclude on Saturday at Harris.

Westwood Soccer Season Comes to an End on Monday

The Westwood Middle School soccer team traveled to Wartrace on Monday to open up play in the CTSC postseason tournament.  The Lady Rockets took on the Cascade Lady Champions with a berth in Friday’s quarterfinals on the line.  Four second half goals by Cascade ended the Lady Rockets season as they fell 5 to 0.

Six first half stops by keeper Holland Willoughby gave Westwood life going into intermission as the Lady Rockets trailed 1 nil.  Cascade turned up the pressure in the 2nd half and added 4 goals to get the final margin of 5 nil.  Willoughby added 11 saves in the 2nd half to finish with 17 on the match.

Speed Limit Drops in Portion of Manchester

In Pursuant to Ordinance No. 1542 passed by the City of Manchester BOMA meeting on October 17, 2017, the speed limit on US 41/SR 2 from Woodland St to a point 1,100 ft. north of its intersection with Woodbury Hwy/ SR 53 has been be lowered to 35 miles per hour. This change is to accommodate areas of shared automobile and bicycle lanes along SR 2. The change took place on September 24, 2018.
Please drive safely and always be aware of bicyclist and pedestrians.

Update on Murder in Grundy County Murder

Here is an update on a story we have been following. What allegedly began as a domestic situation escalated into murder in Grundy County on Sunday afternoon. Four people were shot with a female dying from her injuries. Sheriff Clint Shrum has identified the third victim in the Sunday shooting in Altamont, TN as Christopher Gary Hurst age 38 of Bridgeport, Alabama. Hurst is an acquaintance of the deceased victim, Carolyn Nicole Powell.
Sheriff Shrum stated Mr. Hurst and Jerone Powell, the father of the deceased victim have undergone surgery at area hospitals. Powell is in critical condition. The suspect, John Wesley Smith, also had to be hospitalized. At last report he was listed in fair condition.
Grundy County authorities said Jerome Powell will not face charges because he was trying to protect the rest of his family, including six children who were inside the house.
The shooting happened in the front yard of Powell’s residence on Highway 56 in Altamont.
Smith is from Jasper in Marion County and has a lengthy criminal history. Sheriff Shrum has requested assistance from the District Attorney’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
