Coffee County Middle School Boys Fall in CTC Semifinals

Dayne Crosslin of CCMS basketball

The Coffee County Middle School Red Raider basketball season came to an end on Wednesday in the semifinal round of the CTC tournament.  Taking on top-seeded South Franklin, Coffee County gave the favored Trojans all they could handle for 3 quarters.  But foul trouble and turnovers in the 4th quarter cost the Raiders in a 35 to 23 loss.

Coffee Middle got off to a hot start as they led 10 to 1 after 1 quarter.  South rallied to cut the lead to 1 with 1 minute left in the half but Coffee County held that advantage going into intermission.  The Trojans took a 19 to 18 lead with 2:38 left in the 3rd quarter and never surrendered control after that.

Coffee County was led in scoring by Hayden Garr, Dayne Crosslin and Jacob Holder who all finished with 6 points.   The loss ends the Red Raiders’ season.  Coffee Middle finished the year with a record of 10 to 10.

Saros Stops Career-High 47 Shots, Leads Preds Past Golden Knights

Juuse Saros of the Nashville Predators

The Juice was loose in Vegas.

Juuse Saros made a career-high 47 saves, and the Nashville Predators defeated the Golden Knights, 2-1, on Wednesday night. The result gives the Preds their first-ever win at T-Mobile Arena, as well as a two-game win streak as they head into the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend and subsequent bye week.

The Predators surrendered 48 shots to the Golden Knights – not their most stellar defensive effort of the season – but their netminder made the difference.

“He was unbelievable,” Preds Captain Roman Josi said of Saros. “Every time he steps in, he’s unbelievable. He’s a great goalie, and he’s got a great work ethic. It’s not always easy as a backup, and we’re really lucky to have two goalies like that.”

After surviving an early surge from the Golden Knights that saw the visitors surrender the game’s opening goal, Nashville found their footing as the first period wore on, and less than five minutes into the second, the Predators had themselves a lead.

First, it was Ryan Johansen who crashed the net and tallied in his first contest back after serving a two-game suspension for high-sticking.

Later, Nick Bonino continued his hot streak when he caught Marc-Andre Fleury out of position and potted his sixth goal in his last seven outings to give his team a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes.

Throughout the night, Saros produced arguably his finest outing of his career for the Predators, which included robbing William Karlsson by turning aside a 2-on-0 in the middle frame.

Saros made 14 of his saves in the final stanza to seal the deal and send the Preds home with their 30th win of the season and a boost of confidence as they enter the break.

Notes:

Preds Captain Roman Josi and goaltender Pekka Rinne will represent their team in San Jose at the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend over the next three days. The All-Star Skills Competition takes place on Friday night (8 p.m. CT, NBCSN) before the 2019 NHL All-Star Game commences on Saturday (7 p.m. CT, NBC).

Nashville’s bye week will follow the weekend, and the Preds will next see game action on Feb. 1 when they head to South Florida to take on the Panthers before returning home to host the Dallas Stars one night later.

Name the Dog Park Contest

Manchester dogs and their owners are excited over the City’s new off-leash dog park at the Manchester Sports Park. In honor of the occasion, the Manchester Parks and Recreation Department is sponsoring a contest to select a name for the new park, where canines will be able to frolic freely.
The Department is looking for a name that will attract dog lovers from all over the community. Occupying a section of the Manchester Sports Park adjacent to the Little Duck River Greenway, the park will be a draw for individuals using the greenway or nearby parks.
All entries must be submitted to Thunder Radio at thunder1320.com
Entries will be accepted through January 24. If more than one contestant submits the name chosen, a random drawing of the duplicate entries will determine the winner.
A panel of judges will screen all of the submissions and select three names to forward to the Manchester Parks and Recreation Department. The community will select the winning name via an online poll. The winning name will be unveiled at the grand opening of the dog park on March 23.
The individual who comes up with the winning name will receive a gift basket filled with human and doggy treats! Plus, a photo op with the Mayor at the grand opening!
The staff at the Rec Center was pleased to receive a collection of letters (about naming the Dog Park) from Rachel Wells’ third grade class at College Street Elementary School. Here are Kaden Ingle, Brooklyn Randall and Kaylee Hensley sharing their letters that they sent to the Rec Center about the dog park:

State Leader wants Larger Penalty for Passing Stopped School Buses

Tennessee State Representative Jason Potts has introduced a bill that would increase penalties for those who pass a stopped school bus.
Currently, when drivers are stopped for passing a stopped school bus in Tennessee – they could be charged with a misdemeanor and a fine of up to $1,000.
Under the new proposal, if you pass a school bus when it’s stopped and the flashing lights are out and you cause injury, it’d be a class E Felony. If you cause death, it’d be an even higher penalty.
