CHS Basketball Teams Roll Into Final Week of Regular Season
For the first time in 40 years, the Coffee County Central High School basketball teams have each claimed the regular season district title in the same season. A pair of wins on Friday night over Tullahoma gave the Raiders and Lady Raiders their 9th straight doubleheader sweep and clinched the #1 seed for the upcoming postseason tournament. The Lady Raiders record now stands at 24 and 3 on the season while the Red Raiders improved to 17 and 4. The Lady Raiders will open the district tournament play on Thursday, February 14th at 6 PM at Lawrence County after a first round bye. The Red Raiders also get a first round bye as they open tournament play on Friday, February 15th at 6 PM at Lawrence County as well. The district finals will be held on Saturday, February 16th.
Equally exciting for the Lady Raiders is an appearance in this week’s Associated Press Class AAA Top 10. For the first time in more than 20 years, the Lady Raiders grabbed the #10 spot in the weekly poll which is voted on by writers across the state. Riverdale is the state’s #1 team with a record of 22 and 1 as they captured 13 first place votes. Blackman fell out of the Top 10 to 12th place but did receive a 1st place vote. The Raiders and Lady Raiders will hit the road on Tuesday to begin the final week of the regular season. The road trip begins in Winchester as Coffee County visits Franklin County. The regular season finale will be in Shelbyville on Thursday. The girls’ game will tip off at 6 PM both nights; Thunder Radio’s live coverage will begin with the Char-El Apartments and Home Rental pregame show at 5:50.
Claybusters Open 2019 Sweeping Team and Individual Titles on Saturday
In their first team shoot of 2019, the Coffee County Claybusters traveled to Christiana on Saturday to compete at Big Springs. All 3 Raider teams captured first place titles. For individual honors, the Claybusters captured 5 individual titles and 2 runner-up finishes.
The Coffee County Team #1 won the Junior Division, Class A & B as they shot a high overall score of 470 out of 500. Team #1 was led by Hayden Jacobs and Colter Smith who each broke 96 of 100 clays. Cheyenne Martin. Tucker Carlton shot down 93 while Alexus Stacey shattered 91 clays.
The Coffee County Team #2 won Class A&B in the sub-junior division with a score of 453. Landon Meadows led Team #2 with a perfect 100 score. Logan Meadows added 94 clays and Emma Mathews knocked down 90. Aubrey Payne had 87 clays and Braden Davenport dropped 82.
Team #3 won the Class D of the Junior Division with a score of 424. Team #3 was led by Victoria Majors who shot 96 clays. That performance was good enough to give her the Lady Championship. The Meadows twins captured the top individual titles in the sub junior class. Landon was the champion and Logan captured the runner up title. Coffee County got a ½ sweep in the Junior class as well as Hayden Jacobs nabbed the title followed closely by Colter Smith. Hayden Jacobs captured the Doubles title while Tucker Carlton won the Class A championship.
The Claybusters will return to match play on Saturday when they travel to Tullahoma for an Individual Shoot. That shoot will take place at the Highland Rim Shooters Club. Shooting will begin at 9 AM.
Middle School Springs Sports Enjoy Monday Weather
With surprisingly warmer temperatures on Monday and the rain holding off, several of the middle school teams hit the practice field on Monday. Thunder Radio did a quick tour and grabbed a few pictures as most of the teams began their 2nd week of preseason practice. The spring season opens officially on February 23rd.

2/7/19 — Angeline “Angie” Waterson
Funeral services for Mrs. Angeline “Angie” Waterson, age 97, of Beechgrove, TN, will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 7, 2019, at Manchester Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Beech Grove Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, February 6, 2019, at the funeral home. Mrs. Waterson passed from this life on Sunday, February 3, 2019, at her residence.
Mrs. Waterson was born in Coffee Co., TN to the late John Wesley and Maude Mary Ann Kell Shelton. She was a member and Sunday School teacher at the same church as her ancestors, Garrison Fork Baptist Church in Beechgrove. She loved quilting, crocheting, baking, and cooking, but her favorite thing was flowers and taking care of her family. Angie was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.
In addition to her parents, Angie is also preceded in death by her loving husband of 71 years, Manley Waterson; one son, John Lester Waterson; one son-in-law, William Miller, Jr.; two brothers, John Wesley Shelton and Lester Lee Shelton; two sisters, Pauline Shelton Banks and Lois Shelton Sholter. She is survived by two sons, Boyd (Flossie) Waterson of Shelbyville, TN and Terrell (Gail) Waterson of Beechgrove, TN; one daughter, Shirley Ganelle Waterson Miller of Christiana, TN; ten grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Manchester Funeral Home is honored to serve the Waterson family.
Diana L. Mordeszewski
Diana L. Mordeszewski of Flintville, passed this life on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at Huntsville Hospital at the age of 59 Years. No services are scheduled.
Mrs. Mordeszewski, a native of Milwaukee, was the daughter of the late David Haberski and Patricia A. Gutham Haberski of Flintville. She loved to work and was the Controller at Honda of Decatur. She loved to cook and was a Barbeque Competitor along with a KCBS certified judge. She also enjoyed motorcycle riding and doing volunteer work.
She is survived by her mother, Patricia A. Harberski of Flintville and her husband, Anthony Mordeszewski Jr. of Flintville.
Lynchburg Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gas Prices Continue to Drop– For Now
Gas prices in Tennessee declined 3.5 cents last week. Monday’s state average of $2.02 per gallon is 39 cents less than this time last year.
Tennessee drivers enjoyed the cheapest January at the pump in three years. Last month, Tennessee gas prices averaged $2.01 per gallon. The monthly average was 32 cents less than January 2018, and 11 cents less than January 2017.
AAA spokesman Mark Jenkins said rising oil prices and the switch to summer blend gasoline will eventually boost prices at the pump in the coming months.
The national average price of gasoline is $2.25 per gallon.
The low price in Coffee County as of Monday evening was in Tullahoma at $1.90 per gallon and in Manchester the low price was $1.92.
Possibility of 400 Jobs Coming to Pelham
Up to 400 new jobs available IF a warehouse locates in Pelham, TN.
A company is proposing to locate a warehousing/distribution facility in Pelham and will create up to 400 new jobs. The facility, if located in the area, will be a boost to the local economy and offer jobs to local residents who might otherwise have to leave the area for employment.
Jobs have a starting wages of $11.25 per hour, not including benefits or shift differentials.
Order Processor: Product Shipping, ability to process orders in accurate, efficient and timely shipping process. Ability to work with peers and leadership team, maintaining a clean work area, ability to be cross-trained in other areas of the distribution center, ability to successfully use Voice-directed Picking System, flexibility to work in other areas and tasks as required by Customer needs, other duties as assigned by department leader or supervisor. High school diploma and/or GED equivalent required.
Lift Truck Equipment Operator/Material Handler: Responsible for accurately Storing, retrieving, loading and moving product in warehouse and relay loading / material moving information to appropriate personal. Must be able to successfully complete Lift Truck training. Work with and assist labeler when needed. Will be required the use of a slip sheet attachment. High school diploma and/or GED equivalent required.
Shift schedules for both positions may vary during peak season or because of Distribution Center needs.
