For you folks in Coffee County that do not have broadband service here is some information you need to know.
Tennessee will be among eight states in a new project to expand and update a national broadband map.
A news release from U.S. Sen Marsha Blackburn’s office says the project by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration will help Tennessee get a clear and complete picture of broadband availability.
The other states involved include California, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Utah and West Virginia.
Recent federal budget legislation includes $7.5 million for the project.

More Rain could bring More Flooding

After a few days of sunshine, the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency is warning Tennesseans that with rain possible over the next few days flooding remains an ongoing concern.
As Tennessee remains in a State of Emergency, TEMA says that if Tennessee receives the projected 1/2 to 3/4 inch of rain that is expected Thursday night into Friday, there will likely be no issues with additional flooding. However, if concentrated rainfall of an inch or more should fall, there is the possibility that lake levels could rise, and re-flooding could occur in certain communities.

Heartbeat Bill Moves Forward

A bill banning most abortions once a heartbeat is detected has cleared a key hurdle in the Tennessee Legislature.
The House Health Committee on Tuesday voted 15-4 to send the legislation to the House floor for a full vote, with only Democratic members voting in opposition.
Supporters of the bill broke out in applause once the committee approved it.
Tennessee is among several states with pending bills to ban most abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, about six weeks into pregnancy. Conservative legislatures are pushing increasingly strict anti-abortion laws in an effort to trigger a legal challenge to the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that established a nationwide right to abortion.
Critics of the bill predict enactment of the fetal heartbeat measure would result in a certain legal challenge.

Tennessee Lawmakers Want Minimum Age Raised to 21 to Buy Tobacco or Vaping Products

Several Tennessee lawmakers are pushing to increase the minimum age to buy tobacco or vaping products from 18 to 21.
During a news conference Monday, Republicans Sen. Shane Reeves and Rep. Bob Ramsey said the bill would help address Tennessee’s poor health rankings. More than a dozen health-related groups have backed it.
A legislative fiscal note estimates the bill would annually cost the state about $7 million and local governments $1 million through lost sales tax revenues. Reeves said it will save the state on health care costs for tobacco users in the long term.
Tennessee also ranks toward the bottom with its low cigarette taxes.

Coffee County Red Raiders Fall to Riverdale In Region Tournament to End Strong Season

Darius Rozier of Coffee County CHS basketball

The Red Raider basketball team opened the Region 4AAA Tournament on Tuesday night at home against Riverdale.  The regular season District 8AAA champions welcomed the regular season 7AAA district champions in a quarterfinal matchup in a win or go home battle.   After leading through 3 quarters, Coffee County saw Riverdale rally to capture the 53 to 47 win over the Red Raiders.

The Red Raiders jumped out to a 1 point lead in the first quarter and built it to 8 points at the half and 5 points entering the final stanza.  The depleted Coffee County roster seemed to run out of gas in the 4th quarter.  With a pair of injured starters unavailable for the last 2 weeks, and several starters nursing injuries, the Red Raiders could not overcome a 4th quarter rally from the deeper and taller Riverdale squad.

Darius Rozier finished the game with 22 points as he earned the Crazy Daisies player of the game honor.  Rozier also reached the 1,000 career point mark during the game.  Kyle Farless added 13 points and Jaxon Vaughn added 6 points.

The game marked the end of the careers for seniors Andrew Mahaffey, Chase Simpkins, Darius Rozier, and Harley Hinshaw who captured the regular season District 8AAA title.  The Red Raiders finish the season with a final record of 19 and 7 including the first regular season district title this century.

Coffee County Lady Raider Basketball Fights Hard but Falls at Riverdale

Bella Vinson of Coffee County CHS basketball

After a thrilling overtime win on Monday night, the Coffee County Lady Raider basketball team moved into Tuesday night’s semifinal at Murfreesboro.  Taking on the Riverdale Lady Warriors who are nationally ranked and the number #1 team in the state, the Lady Raiders fought the Lady Warriors to the very end before falling in the game.  Coffee County saw their season come to an end by a final score of 57 to 48.

After falling behind early, Coffee County outscored Riverdale 28 to 23 in the second half but could never run down Riverdale.  After trailing by 14 at the half, Coffee County fought the deficit to 7 in the 3rd quarter.  Coffee County kept the deficit to single digits throughout the 4th quarter but Riverdale held off a late Lady Raider charge to get the win.

Coffee County was led in scoring by Bella Vinson who had 15 points.  Senior Jacey Vaughn scored 14 points including 4 three point baskets and Senior Abby Morgan added 8 points.

The game marked the end of the careers for seniors Chloe Spry, Abby Morgan and Jacey Vaughn who won back to back regular season District 8AAA titles.  The Lady Raiders finish the season with a final record of 28 and 5 including going unbeaten in district play for the first time since 1993.
