Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month begins May 1– Manchester man to speak at Skills and Training Competition
On Wednesday, May 1, the Tennessee Highway Safety Office joins the Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) and Vanderbilt University Medical Center to kick off Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. A press event will take place in conjunction with the Ninth Annual Music City Police Motorcycle Skills and Training Competition, hosted by the THP’s “Falcons” Motor Unit at Opry Mills.
During the event, guest speaker Andrew Floied of Manchester, TN will discuss the 2013 motorcycle crash on Hwy 41 that changed his life forever.
Last year, there were 2,701 motorcycle crashes in Tennessee. Of those crashes, 166 were fatal.

Coffee County CHS Softball Blanks Shelbyville on Tuesday Night
Coffee County CHS softball team welcomed district foe Shelbyville to Terry Floyd Field on Tuesday night. The Lady Raiders plated 4 runs in the 5th inning to blow open a tight game. Coffee County went on to grab a 5 to 0 win.
The Lady Raiders plated a run in the bottom of the 1st inning when Keri Munn laced an RBI single up the middle to score Katie Rutledge. The score remained 1 to 0 as Munn pitched masterfully allowing the Lady Raider bats to light up in the 5th inning. Five hits plated 4 runs for Coffee County highlighted by a 2 RBI single from Keri Munn and an RBI double from Haley Richardson.
Munn finished the game with a pair of hits and 3 RBI. Katie Rutledge had a double and 2 singles and scored twice while Haidyn Campbell had 3 singles. Munn scattered 6 hits for the shutout win as she struck out 8.
The Lady Raiders are back at home on Thursday when they play host to Lawrence County for Senior Night. First pitch is set for 7 PM at Terry Floyd Field and Thunder Radio will be on hand to bring you all the action. Lucky Knott will have the play by play beginning with the pregame show at 6:50.
Coffee County CHS Athletic Department Open House in Wednesday
The Coffee County Central High School athletic department is hosting an Open House on Wednesday, April 24th at the CHS cafeteria. Prospective student-athletes and their families are invited to come out and meet the coaches, get try-out information, visit the facilities and also get information about academic eligibility requirements and the NCAA Clearinghouse. The Open House will be held from 5:30 to 7 PM in the CHS cafeteria and is open to the public.
Westwood Softball Edges Liberty; Advances in DRVC Tournament
The Westwood softball team opened up play in the Duck River Valley Conference on Tuesday night. Taking on Liberty at Dave King Park, the Lady Rockets fought back from a 3 run deficit to capture the 4 to 3 win.
Liberty jumped out to a 3 to 0 lead in the 2nd inning as they used a pair of hits and a walk, coupled with a Lady Rocket error to stun Westwood. Westwood cut the deficit to 1 in the 4th inning behind 3 walks, a triple and a single. The Lady Rockets grabbed the lead in the 6th inning on a double, a single and a sacrifice fly.
Kara Beth Patton had a double and scored 2 runs to lead Westwood. Lilee Scott added a triple and scored a run while Emma Kidder finished with 2 RBI. Kidder also got the win in the circle as she struck out 5 while scattering 7 hits.
Westwood returns to the diamond on Wednesday for second round action. The Lady Rockets will square off in the winner’s bracket semifinals against Huntland. First pitch is set for 6:30 PM at Dave King Park.
Coffee County CHS Soccer Falls to Lincoln County in Tuesday Thriller
On a night set aside to retire the jersey of former Red Raider Ben Reid, the Coffee County CHS soccer team hosted Lincoln County. In a match you heard here on Thunder Radio, the visiting Falcons used a pair of set plays to grab a 2 nil halftime lead. Lincoln County went on to claim the 2 to 1 win.
Lincoln County got a pair of goals in the first half off a pair of corner kicks. The Falcons scored the first goal in the 7th minute and added the second goal in the 40th minute. The Raiders got on the board in the 61st minute when Briggs Haithcock scored off a corner kick from Felix Salinas. Coffee County matched the physical play of Lincoln County down the stretch but could not get the equalizer.
The Raiders are on the road on Thursday when they travel to Shelbyville for a district match. Opening kick is set for 7 PM.

Coffee County Middle School Golf Falls to Tullahoma
The Coffee County Middle School golf team traveled to Lakewood Country Club on Tuesday for a match with Tullahoma. The Raider linksters came up short 8 ½ to 3 ½.
Winning flags for Coffee County were Zach Tidwell and Avery Hill who captured 1 ½ flags. Kira Jarrell and Maggie Crouch also captured a flag. Also grabbing a flag was the trio of Liza Freeze, Madison Winn and Cadie Prater.
Coffee Middle is on the road on Thursday when they travel to Tims Ford to take on South Franklin. That match will tee off at 3:30 PM at Bear Trace.
Westwood Golf Falls to Fayetteville on Tuesday
The Westwood Middle School golf team traveled to Fayetteville on Tuesday to tangle with the Fayetteville Middle School Tigers. The undermanned Rockets battled hard with the Tigers before falling 9 to 3.
Westwood got 1 ½ flags from the team of Araya Hayes and Marli Miller. They also got 1 ½ flags when they split a forfeit match. The Rocket golfers are on the road on Thursday when they travel to Tims Ford to take on North Franklin. That match will tee off at 3:30 PM at Bear Trace.

Memorial services for Judy Lynn Davis Vaughn, age 54, of Hillsboro, TN, will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Manchester Funeral Home. Visitation with the family will be from 5:00 PM until service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Ms. Vaughn passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2019 at Unity Medical Center in Manchester.
