No Rate Increase and Rebates for ERPUD Customers
Elk River Public Utility District (ERPUD) serves more than 17,000 homes and businesses in Coffee and Franklin counties and they have some good news to pass along. ERPUD has announced no rate increases for the year to come.
Rebates will also be coming to all active customers in the total amount of approximately $975,000.
For residential ERPUD customers, the base service charge falls at either $10.75 or $14 per month, depending on whether the customer uses services year-round or for heating only.
Commercial and industrial customers pay higher monthly charges.
In June, ERPUD will credit those customer service charges to all active customers. In fact, the rebate amount will effectively credit customers for four months’ applicable service charges, returning approximately $975,000 to its customers.
ERPUD will give customers credit on their bill. Industrial processing customers are most likely to notice the rebate without any such notation on their bill. Those customers, who pay a minimum $250 charge each month, will see a $1,000 drop in June.
Large commercial customers, who pay a minimum $60 charge each month, will notice a $240 drop in June.
Residential customers, who pay between $10.75 and $14 each month depending on service, will see their bills drop by $43 and $56 respectively in June.
More good news is that ERPUD’s 2020 fiscal year budget projects revenues at $20.4 million with expenditures of $19.1 million.
DREMC Warns about another Scam
Another electric bill payment scam has surfaced in the Lynchburg district this week as an impersonator told a DREMC member to call the number and pay his last three months bills with a credit card in the next two hours or his power would be cut off.
This time, the scammer somehow knew the member’s last three bill amounts and the late fees.
The member was wise to the scam and quickly reported it to DREMC.
The scammer gave 913-380-8000, ext. 204 to call with the credit card payment. Please beware of payment scams such as this. Always call your local DREMC office if you get suspicious calls demanding bill payment and threatening power disconnection.

Asian Longhorned Ticks Detected in Tennessee
The Asian longhorned tick has now spread to 11 states. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there is no evidence that the tick has transmitted pathogens to humans or animals in the U.S.
Two Asian longhorned ticks were recently found on a dog in Union County, and five were found on a cow in Roane County. In the U.S., the tick has been reported on 17 different mammal species.
Tips to prevent tick bites in animals and livestock include:
• Coordinate with your veterinarian to determine appropriate pest prevention for pets and livestock.
• Check pets and livestock for ticks frequently.
• Remove any ticks by pulling from the attachment site of the tick bite with tweezers.
• Monitor your pets and livestock for any changes in health.
If your animals are bitten by a tick, put the tick in a Ziplock bag, writing down the date and where the tick was most likely encountered, and storing it in a freezer. If any symptoms of a tick-borne disease begin to develop, you should bring the tick to your veterinarian.

Sounds Get Swept in Doubleheader
The Round Rock Express outlasted the Nashville Sounds and came away with a pair of wins Monday afternoon at First Tennessee Park. The Express got a dominant performance from pitcher Cy Sneed to earn a 2-0 win in game one and got a clutch two-run double from Anibal Sierra to help grab game two, 8-4.
Game one of the doubleheader was a continuation of the suspended contest between the two teams on April 18. Nashville reliever Tim Dillard put forth a tremendous effort with seven innings in relief, but the offense went silent with only two hits.
Yordan Alvarez’s monster season continued when he hit a solo homer to give the Express a 1-0 lead. It was the 20th home run of the season for Alvarez who got a ball up into the wind and watched it sail over the wall in left-center.
Round Rock got a sacrifice fly from catcher Jamie Ritchie in the top of the fourth to make it a 2-0 game. From there, Dillard allowed only four baserunners the rest of the way. He was tagged with a tough loss after allowing two runs on six hits in seven innings. He struck out six and didn’t walk any batters.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair until the ninth inning when Round Rock plated five. Nashville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second thanks to back-to-back doubles by Andy Ibanez and Hunter Cole, and a run-scoring groundout by Adam Moore.
Round Rock evened the game at 2-2 in the third and then took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on an RBI double by Alvarez. Nashville came right back with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to even the game at 3-3.
It stayed tied until Round Rock erupted for five runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Game five of the six-game series is scheduled for Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. Right-hander Seth Maness (2-1, 4.50) starts for the Sounds. The Express have not announced a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
– With today’s 2-0 loss and 8-4 loss, the Sounds are now 20-32 on the season.

– Dillard threw 7.0 innings in relief – the longest outing by a Nashville reliever in 2019.
– Hunter Cole extended his season-long hitting streak to 11 games with an RBI double. He is hitting .512 (22-for-43) with 14 runs scored, 4 doubles, 4 home runs, 13 RBI and 4 walks during the streak.
