Nashville SC Loses in PK’s to Fall Out of U.S. Open Cup Play
Nashville SC’s run in the 2019 U.S. Open Cup came to a crashing, heartbreaking end in penalties against Charleston Battery on Wednesday night at Hayes Stadium in Murfreesboro that finished 1-1 and 3-0 in penalty kicks.
Nashville SC controlled a huge majority of possession, winning the battle 68.4% to 31.6% and outshot the Battery 27-11. The Boys in Gold couldn’t find the finishing touch however as 27 shots produced just a single goal.
It was Charleston that struck first in the 24’ minute as forward Nicque Daley opened up the Nashville defense and scored on a breakaway, beating NSC keeper Connor Sparrow to give the Battery a lead against the run of play.
It took nearly 40 minutes for Nashville to find an equalizer, but in the 72’ minute Kharlton Belmar tapped in a Ropapa Mensah cross to give Nashville SC life and eventually send the match into extra time. More NSC chances went wasted in the two 15-minute extra time sessions and the match fell to penalty kicks.
Nashville missed its first three penalties while Charleston made three of its four, sealing the match for the visitors.
Here are three takeaways from the match:
1) Chances Wasted – The Nashville SC offense was electric, creating 21 chances, led by Justin Davis and Taylor Washington who each had four. The final touch was severely lacking, however, as Nashville managed just five shots on target despite dominating the run of play. It is a large opportunity missed for Nashville as it now will have to wait until 2020 before it plays another competitive match against an MLS club.
2) Belmar Finds the Net – The lone bright spot in the finishing was Kharlton Belmar who scored the single Nashville SC tally. It was his second goals of the season in all competitions and was set up beautifully by Alan Winn and Ropapa Mensah who supplied the assists on the goal.
3) A Break is Much Needed – Nashville SC has played eight matches in 26 days, two matches a week for the last four weeks, and legs are heavy throughout the group. Nashville SC will now get a chance to rest as it doesn’t take the field again in USL Championship play until June 9 at Bethlehem Steel FC.
Express Outlast Sounds in Marathon
The Round Rock Express got out of town with a 13-12 win over the Nashville Sounds in 13-inning marathon Tuesday night at First Tennessee Park. The game took 4 hours and 36 minutes to complete and finished with a pair of position players on the mound for their respective team.
Both teams scored in the 11th, 12th and 13th innings, but Round Rock scored three in the 13th and the Sounds answered with only two to ultimately come up short.
The back-and-forth scoring by both clubs started in the first and lasted until the final frame. Round Rock out-hit Nashville, 22-16. Despite being out-hit by six, the Sounds had a whopping 28 at-bats with runners in scoring position.
Trailing 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Delino DeShields’ second hit of the night was a two-out, two-run single to score Carlos Tocci and Adam Moore to even the game at 7-7. Neither team scored in the ninth or tenth despite multiple chances for each club.
It looked like Nashville had the game won in the 10th and in the 12th. With one out and Tocci at third in the 10th, Sounds newcomer Tyler Pill lined a fly ball to right field. Round Rock’s Kyle Tucker caught it but Tocci failed to tag up on what could have been the winning run.
Round Rock held a 9-7 lead in the top of the 11th only to give up a game-tying, two-out, two-run homer to Andy Ibanez in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 9-9 game.
The odd ball continued in the 12th as Round Rock once again took a 10-9 lead. Nashville’s Adam Moore tied the game with a fielder’s choice and was standing at first base when Pill’s deep fly ball to right field bounced over the fence for a ground-rule double, thus preventing Moore to score with what would have been the winning run.
Round Rock scored three in the top of the 13th off Nashville infielder Tyler Depreta-Johnson and the Sounds came up short after plating two runs off Express catcher Jamie Ritchie.
The Sounds welcome the New Orleans Baby Cakes to town for a four-game series set to begin Thursday night. Right-hander Pedro Payano starts for Nashville against right-hander Dustin Beggs for New Orleans. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
– With tonight’s 13-12 loss, the Sounds are now 21-32 on the season.
– Delino DeShields, Andy Ibanez, Patrick Wisdom, Carlos Tocci and Tyler Pill had multi-hit games.
– The Sounds are now 1-3 in extra-inning games. All four games have come against Round Rock.
– Tonight’s game was the last between Nashville and Round Rock in 2019. Round Rock won the season series, 9-7. The two teams played 16 times in the last 51 days.
Muslim Advocacy Group Files Formal Complaint against Coffee County District Attorney Craig Northcott
The group filed a formal complaint with the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee.
We reported recently that Northcott wrote in a Facebook comment that Islam is “evil, violent and against God’s truth.” He also wrote, “there are no Constitutional rights. There are God-given rights protected by the Constitution. If you don’t believe in the one true God, there is nothing to protect.” Northcott made the comments while responding to a Tullahoma alderman candidate’s post in late April.
Northcott later responded he would not resign and did not have anything to apologize about.
Northcott told WMSR News on Wednesday afternoon that he did not have a response about the Muslim advocacy group’s formal complaint at this time.

Fatal Motorcycle Crash in Shelbyville
A Shelbyville man lost his life around midday Monday when his motorcycle and a flatbed truck collided on North Main Street at Palmer Drive.
Victor Curry, 58, of U.S. 41A South was responsive and talking with emergency personnel at the scene, Deputy Chief Brian Crews of the Shelbyville Police Department said. They added that Curry was airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville where he died of serious internal injuries.
Bobby Williams, 29, of Jolley Road, told Officer Chris Vest he pulled into the busy intersection from Palmer Drive and didn’t see Curry’s oncoming northbound motorcycle. Williams showed no signs of impairment and has been cooperative with investigators, Vest said, and no charges are likely except for possible traffic violations. (Shelbyville Times-Gazette)
