Sounds Get Swept in Omaha

Nashville finished a tough series against Omaha Sunday, losing 10-5 and was officially swept by the Storm Chasers. It was a close game through the first half of the game until Omaha pulled away from Nashville.

The first lead of the series for Nashville was taken in the first inning when Christian Lopes singled to score Scott Heineman. Omaha came back in the bottom of the first inning with two runs. They scored twice with the bases loaded when Jorge Bonifacio was hit by a pitch and Bubba Starling walked in a run to put Omaha up 2-1.

The Sounds took the lead back in the top of the third inning when Lopes tied the game on a sacrifice fly and Eli White singled to score Carlos Tocci. Omaha tied the game in the bottom of the third on their own sacrifice fly by Bonifacio to even the game at three runs apiece.

Andy Ibanez responded with a solo home run in the top of the fourth, his 10th of the season. The Storm Chasers would respond yet again with three runs to put themselves up 7-4. At this point, there were five lead changes and one tie.

Nashville would not be able to keep up with Omaha, as the Storm Chasers scored two runs in the fifth inning and one more in the sixth when Bonifacio hit a solo home run to put Omaha up 10-4.

Tyler Pill hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth inning for his second home run of the season but nothing else was done as the Sounds lost to the Storm Chasers 10-5.

Sunday was the last day of play for Triple-A baseball before the All-Star break. All teams get three days off and Nashville will resume play on Thursday by hosting New Orleans.

Nashville Drops Third Straight to Omaha

The Nashville Sounds found themselves behind early when the Omaha Storm Chasers put up eight-runs in the first inning. They were able to hold on to that lead for the remainder of the game, eventually putting the Sounds away, 11-3.

The eight-run inning in the first came on seven hits. Jorge Bonifacio hit a single with the bases loaded to score the first run. Two more runs scored on a Nick Dini single. Jecksson Flores hit an RBI single to add another. Humberto Arteaga would knock in two more with a single. The remaining base runs scored on an Erick Mejia triple to give Omaha the early 8-0 lead.

Tim Dillard gave up each of those runs but settled down and shutout the Storm Chasers for the next three innings. However, he gave up two more runs in the sixth inning, allowing 10 runs for his second consecutive start.

The first run scored for Nashville came in the fifth inning on a solo home run by Jett Bandy to lead off the inning. It was his ninth home run of the season.

Scott Heineman continued to stay hot for Nashville, hitting a two-run home run in the sixth inning to put the Sounds down 10-3. It was the second night in a row Heineman recorded three hits.

Omaha would add one more run in the seventh inning to deliver the dagger and finish the score at 11-3. The loss puts Nashville on a three-game losing streak.

Tomorrow will be the final game of the series against Omaha and the final game before the All-Star break. First pitch will be at 2:05 p.m., where right-hander Esmerling Vasquez (1-1, 3.68) will be activated from the injured list to start for the Sounds while left-hander Eric Skoglund (0-1, 6.00) will start for the Storm Chasers.

Nashville SC Falls After Surrendering 2 Second Half Goals

Daniel Rios of Nashville SC[Photo courtesy of nashvillesc.com]

A first half lead turned into a second half nightmare as Nashville Soccer Club saw its halftime lead evaporate at the home of the two-time defending USL Cup champions with two second half Louisville City goals winning the match 2-1. Goals from Louisville in the 65’ and 74’ minute doomed Nashville to its first-ever loss in club history when it scored the opening goal.

Nashville’s leading scorer Daniel Ríos opened the scoring with a beautiful curling finish in the 11’ minute for his 11th goal of the season, giving Nashville SC its first-ever lead in four trips to Louisville.

Louisville City had a prime chance to even the score late in the opening 45 minutes when the referee awarded a penalty for a foul on Nashville’s Bolu Akinyode in the corner of the box. Louisville midfielder Magnus Rasmussen took the penalty for the champs and skied his attempt over the bar.

In the second half, it was Louisville City who finally found the net from a set piece. A free kick sent in from Oscar Jimenez found the head of defender Paco Craig who buried it near post to equalize the match.

It didn’t take long for Louisville City to find its winner. A through ball out wide for winger Brian Ownby was crossed in to Antoine Hoppenot who one-touched it into the net, sealing Nashville’s loss.

Here are three takeaways from the loss.

1) Ríos Chasing Gold

Daniel Ríos continued his chase for a USL Championship Golden Boot with another goal on Saturday night. It was Ríos 11th of the season, one off the league lead held by Solomon Asante of Phoenix Rising. Ríos finished second in the Golden Boot race last season, losing to now-teammate Cameron Lancaster. Ríos is on pace for his second consecutive 20-goal season, a feat never accomplished in USL Championship history.

2) Lancaster Leaves Match Early

Nashville SC forward Cameron Lancaster made his first return to Slugger Field since coming to Nashville SC from Louisville City in the offseason. Lancaster was a factor early, assisting on the first goal of the match by fellow forward Daniel Ríos. Unfortunately, Lancaster’s match was a short one as the English forward was subbed off in the 29’ minute for Ropapa Mensah following an apparent knock. Lancaster has missed time this season for various minor injuries. Saturday’s match was just his fifth league start of the season.

3) First-Ever Lead then Loss

Nashville SC has been excellent when scoring the first goal, with a 22-0-9 record coming into the match when scoring first. That statistic didn’t hold up against Louisville on Saturday as the two second half goals put an end to the mark. It is also only the second time that Nashville has lost consecutive USL Championship matches after doing so once last season.

Up Next

Nashville SC will have 11 days between matches as it won’t take the field again until June 17 on the road at Memphis 901 FC. The in-state rivals have met once, earlier this season in Nashville, and the 615 got the better of 901 by a 2-0 score at First Tennessee Park on April 13. Kickoff for that match on June 17 will be 7:30 p.m.

Sounds’ Offense Quiet Again in Omaha

The Nashville Sounds’ offense was quiet for the second game in a row in Omaha, as the Sounds fell 9-2 to the Storm Chasers on Friday night at Werner Park. The Sounds had lost 1-0 in the opener of the series and gone 21 consecutive scoreless innings when they managed runs late in Friday’s game.

Omaha took a 1-0 lead in the first against Austin Bibens-Dirkx and doubled the lead with a Nick Dini homer in the bottom of the fifth. Meanwhile the Sounds loaded the bases in the third and fifth innings but could not score against Omaha starter Arnaldo Hernandez. Bibens-Dirkx gave up the two runs over five innings in the loss. The Storm Chasers added a run in the sixth and three unearned runs in the seventh against rehabbing Rangers reliever Kyle Dowdy to break open the game, 6-0.

The Sounds finally scored in the eighth, having not plated a run since the third inning on Wednesday. They loaded the bases with no outs, and Kevin Mendoza bounced into a double play to score Scott Heineman. After Omaha scored three more runs in the bottom of the eighth against Pete Fairbanks and Jake Petricka, Patrick Wisdom belted a homer in the ninth off Richard Lovelady for the 9-2 final.

Game 3 of the four-game series is Saturday night. Tim Dillard (5-7, 5.12) is scheduled to pitch for the Sounds against a starter to be announced by Omaha. First pitch is set for 7:05 CT.

Post-Game Notes

The Sounds’ streak of consecutive winning series has ended at three
Patrick Wisdom’s homer was his 12th of the year, with seven of them coming since June 1
Rangers catcher Isiah Kiner-Falefa went 1-for-3 and played seven innings in the fourth game of his major league rehab assignment
