Red Raider Tennis Player Jaden Talley Advances to Tournament Finals Finish

After his performance in the seeding matches, Talley opened up play in the single elimination bracket on Sunday with a bye in the round of 16. In the quarterfinals, Talley captured a straight set win(6-3, 6-2) over Tyler Smith of Franklin. Talley battled to another straight set win in the semifinals by set scores of 7-5, 6-1 over Owen Irving of Nashville to advance to the finals. In the finals, Jaden squared off against Max Pruitt of Ensworth. Talley fell in straight sets 4-6, 3-6.
Talley credits his performance to a long summer of working on his game and facing some tougher competition. Talley and CHS teammate Jonah Rollman have practiced together every chance possible this summer and Jaden says “it has improved some areas of my game from the beginning of the summer.” Talley has also committed himself to working against older and more talented players this summer in league play to develop his skills.
The tournament was the 2nd of the summer for Talley as he won the consolation bracket title in his first tournament earlier this summer. Next up for Talley will be the state team tennis championship in Murfreesboro. Talley, a member of a select team out of Murfreesboro, is looking forward to the tournament which begins on Friday and concludes on Saturday. In the preparation matches for this week-end’s tournament, Talley’s team is unbeaten.
Westwood’s Dyer-Bouldin Field Undergoes Improvement Project

Thunder Radio spoke with Westwood head coach Chad Dyer on Tuesday and he had this to say: “We are very excited Dr. Vaughn and the MCS school board saw the need to invest in making Dyer-Bouldin field a place the city can be proud of. A football field worthy of the two men its named after. Our kids can’t wait to get on it and that’s what this is all about. Not only do our kids deserve a safe playing surface but we need to do our part to ensure our opponents can trust our playing surface as well. With the help of Dr. Vaughn and the school board I feel everyone can trust our field will be suitable for Football and Soccer.”
The existing grass field was completely taken off and the surface laser graded to with a new crown for drainage. An irrigation system was installed and fresh layer of 419 bermuda sod was placed on the surface. With the finishing touch, a new set of gooseneck goal posts were added in each end zone. The multi-use field is the home of the Rocket football team and the Rocket and Lady Rocket soccer teams.
Sounds Lose Tight Game in San Antonio
San Antonio center fielder Trent Grisham hit a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Missions to a 6-5 win over the Nashville Sounds Tuesday night at Nelson Wolff Stadium.
Grisham’s blast was off Nashville reliever Miguel Del Pozo and came with one out in the frame. It snapped a 5-5 tie in what was a back-and-forth game all night.
Neither team got length from their starting pitcher as Pedro Payano threw 79 pitches in 2 2/3 innings for the Sounds and Drew Smyly threw 83 pitches in 3 2/3 innings for the Missions. Payano allowed five earned runs and Smyly yielded four.
The scoring started immediately in the first when San Antonio’s Nate Orf knocked in a pair of runs with a single to center field.
Patrick Wisdom’s first hit of the night trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the second, but the Missions came back with a run of their own to extend the lead to 3-1. The same happened in the third when Matt Davidson’s RBI fielder’s choice netted Nashville a run, but San Antonio’s Lucas Erceg drilled a two-run homer off Payano to make it a 5-2 game.
In the fourth, Juremi Profar had an RBI double and Eli White came through with a run-scoring single to cut the deficit to one run at 5-4.
Relievers Tim Dillard and Kyle Dowdy kept the Sounds in it while the offense chipped away. The two bullpen arms tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings to keep the game close. Zack Granite’s RBI double plated Jett Bandy in the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6.
It stayed that way until Grisham’s homer off a 3-2 pitch in the bottom of the eighth gave San Antonio the lead.
Game three of the four-game series is scheduled for Wednesday night in San Antonio. Right-hander Austin Bibens-Dirkx (0-1, 3.68) starts for Nashville against right-hander Aaron Wilkerson (6-1, 2.72) for San Antonio. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Post-Game Notes
– With tonight’s 6-5 loss, the Sounds dropped to 40-55 on the season.
– Patrick Wisdom had two more hits for Nashville and is hitting .306 (11-for-36) in nine games in the month of July.
– Zack Granite swiped his 17th base of the season and is now tied for seventh-most in the Pacific Coast League.
– Eli White went 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to six games.

Charles William Baker Sr. of Tullahoma, Tennessee passed from this earthly
life and into the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, on
Monday, July 15, 2019. He was 76 years old.
He was born at his Bakertown home in Moore County, Tennessee on August 7,
1942 to the late Madge Walker and late Lannie Baker. On December 28, 2004,
he married his best friend Mona Faye Chapman, who survives.
He lived life to the fullest and made everyday count. He loved people and
never met a stranger; rest assured, whenever speaking to him, he would
always have something witty, comical, or sarcastical-funny to say. That was
just Daddy.
He was a well-known Master Mason for the majority of his life, but was
probably more well-known for what he laid out in the kitchen, be it at his
own home or at the Barrel House BBQ. He truly was a jack of all trades. He
deeply loved all his family and his two dogs Patches and Peaches. He will
be tremendously missed by all who loved and knew him.
He is survived by his son, Chuck Baker of Lynchburg, TN, daughter,
Jacqueline (Harry) Conway of Tullahoma, TN, daughter, Crystal (Cale) Thomas
of Winchester, TN, daughter, Charsie Henley of McMinnville, TN, and
daughter, Shannon Roberts of Lynchburg, TN, sister, Dorothy (Charles)
Shelton of Winchester, TN, sister, Barbera Sisk of Fayetteville, TN,
brother, James Walker of Tullahoma, TN, sister, Brenda (Jim) Ramsey of
Flintville, TN, and sister, Debbie (Silvia) Walker of Tucson, AZ.
Grandchildren – Adam, Ashley and Hannah Baker of Lynchburg, TN Tori Rogers,
Destiny and Emma Grace Hill, all of Tullahoma, TN, Mason and Macie Lynn
Vonwert of Tullahoma, TN, Haley and Michael Whitsell of Lynchburg, TN and
Cody and Jesse Cates, Chris Gross, and Shawna Vaughn all of McMinnville,
TN, numerous great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by an infant son – Michael Eugene Baker, infant
sister Emily Walker, step-brother Elbert Walker, and step-father Jim
Walker. Funeral Services will be held Thursday July 18, 2019 at 2:00 pm
with burial services to follow at Lois Cemetery. The family will receive
friends on Wednesday evening, July 17, from 5pm-8pm at the Lynchburg
Funeral Home, with Brother Mike Awalt officiating.

Mr. Gary Hamilton Freeze, age 45, passed away
Monday, July 15, 2019 at St. Thomas West in Nashville, TN with his family
by his side. He was a farmer and a member of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed
making flower arrangements, loved his family and was known to always bring
a laugh.
Gary was preceded in death by a daughter, Kelsey Marie Freeze;
his mother Pamela Yvonne Nobles Freeze; maternal grandfathers, Roy Hamilton
Nobles and Fred L. “Pete” Freeze; paternal grandparents, Melvin & Dorothy
Freeze.
Gary is survived by three daughters: Katlynn Yvonne Freeze,
Karleigh Faith (Blake) Freeze, Kristlynn Rose Freeze; granddaughter, Alivia
Dyanne Brown; father, Greg Freeze (Pam); maternal grandmother Jean Freeze;
3 brothers, Stan (Laura), Brad (Priscilla), Russ (Audra); nephews, Zach,
Jake, Wyatt & Kaden; niece Linley.

7/19/19 — Wilda M. Buckner Vanderpool
Wilda M. Buckner Vanderpool, 96 years old of Waverly, NY passed away.
She married the late Aaron Vanderpool in 1983, who predeceased her; along
with her parents, Elisha and Zora Buckner; her daughter, Faye Frunk; a son,
Tony Willis; and her brother, Lester Buckner.
Wilda is survived by her daughter, Linda and her husband, Wright Rantz of
Maryland; son, Wayne and Linda Willis of Louisiana; sister, Alta Jean Jones
of Tennessee; two step daughters, Sheila Bump and Lois Swackhammer of
Pennsylvania; along with many grandchildren and great grandchildren; two
very special friends, Jerry and Helen Ousterout of Florida ; and a dear
friend, Marilyn, that set and read to her at the nursing home.

Sounds Get Blasted by San Antonio on Monday Night
In what was a close game in the first half of the game, San Antonio scored six runs in the fifth inning to break open their lead and continued to score, eventually winning 11-1. Two-time MLB All-Star Gio Gonzalez made a rehab start for San Antonio and allowed the only run to Nashville.
San Antonio scored first in the bottom of the first when Trent Grisham hit a lead-off homer on a fly ball to right-center field, giving the Missions a 1-0 lead. Nashville’s starting pitcher Seth Maness pitched well after that, getting the Missions to ground into double plays in three of the first four innings.
Eli White was the one who tagged the run on Gonzalez when he hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. It was his 12th home run of the season. That tied the game at one apiece.
But San Antonio exploded for six runs in the fifth inning. Cory Spangenberg opened the inning up with a two-run single. David Freitas had an RBI single himself before Travis Shaw hit a three-run home run to make the score 6-1, Missions.
The Missions would score in each of the next three innings. Freitas hit another RBI single in the sixth inning. Grisham singled with the bases loaded in the seventh inning to score one, followed by a Mauricio Dubon RBI fielder’s choice. Nate Orf was responsible for the final run in the bottom of the eighth when he hit an RBI single himself, finalizing the score at 11-1.
Game two of the series starts Tuesday at 7:05 p.m., where right-hander Pedro Payano (2-2, 3.08) will start for the Sounds and face off against left-hander Drew Smyly (1-0, 3.00) for the Missions.
Post-Game Notes
– With Monday ‘s 11-1 loss, the Sounds drop to 40-54 on the season.
– The lead-off home run by Trent Grisham was the fourth time the Sounds allowed a lead-off home run this season. The last came from Oklahoma City’s Gavin Lux on June 30. Connor Joe also did so on June 29 for Oklahoma City. Magneuris Sierra hit one on June 20 for New Orleans.
– The Sounds three double plays tied a team season-high. The only other time they did so was on April 30 versus Omaha.
– Eli White’s 12 home runs rank third for the Sounds. He trails Patrick Wisdom (15) and Matt Davidson (22).
– Zack Granite and Matt Davidson both had multi-hit efforts. It was Granite’s 29th multi-hit game and Davidson’s 19th.
Manchester Makos Swim Club Captures Summer Race Championship(Updated)

The Manchester team broke several team and meet records and three Makos took home high point awards for their age division: Isaac Lee (13-14 boys), Caitlyn Slayton (15-16 girls) and Ashley Slayton (17-19 girls).
The Makos got relay team wins from:
• 8U girls’ team of Kendall Kesling, Avory Gilday, Cora Rice and Harper Crosslin won the 100M freestyle relay with a time of 1:25.51.
• 14U mixed team of Nick Bogle, Emily Williams, Lee Issac and Clancy Sand won the 100M medley relay with a time of 1:01.35. (New Race League record)
• 19U mixed team of Ashley Slayton, Jack Beachborad, Joshua Rutledge and Caitlyn Slayton won the 100M medley relay with a time of 56.90.
• 14U boys’ team of Nick Bogle, Logan Holt, David Everett and Issac Lee won the 100M freestyle relay with a time of 52.94.
• 19U girls’ team of Caitlyn Slayton, Lauren Lee, Madeline DeWolfe and Ashley Slayton won the 50M freestyle with a time of 55.61.

“I think there are three things that make our team so successful,” said head coach Shawn Daniels. “Our swimmers have an incredible work ethic, practicing for hours multiple times per week. They do a good job of supporting each other throughout the season, both in and outside of the pool. We also have an extraordinary support team comprised of parent volunteers and our recreation department.”
Good coaching doesn’t hurt, either. Daniels started the Makos team ten years ago and has consistently led her swimmers to break records, both locally and regionally. Becky Behrendorff and Rebekah Buchanan round out the coaching team, contributing countless hours at the pool to help swimmers hone their skills and encourage them to do their best.
The Manchester Makos, housed at the Manchester Recreation Center, is comprised of 118 swimmers, ages 4-18. The summer swim season included five meets, and the Makos won all of them. Points are given for the top three finishers in each event and contribute to the team’s total. In addition to individual races, swimmers compete in a series of relays.
“Swimming is a unique sport,” said Makos Parent Board President Lisa Lazalier. “It gives participants the chance to celebrate the team’s accomplishments while focusing on an individual goal. Even if a swimmer doesn’t place in an event, if he/she shaves off time, it’s considered an individual victory.
The Manchester Makos Swim Team is a competitive swim team offering high-quality professional coaching and technique instruction for all ages and abilities. The team’s goal is to provide every member with the opportunity to improve swimming skills and achieve success at his or her level of ability, from novice to advanced swimmer.

Coffee County Raiders 10U Baseball Team Wins State Title

On Friday, the Raiders opened up pool play with a 14 to 7 win over the Liberty Patriots. They came back on Saturday afternoon to roll up DeKalb County 13 to 3. They closed out Saturday with a 15 to 4 win over McMinnville to give them the top seed in the tournament championship bracket.
On Sunday, the Raiders opened up with a pair of wins over DeKalb County and McMinnville to advance to the finals against Liberty. The Raiders fell behind 4 to 2 going into the 3rd inning before Trace Parker ripped a 3 run homer to spark a 5 run 3rd inning. The Raiders added 7 more runs in the 4th inning to gain the 10 run cushion needed for the mercy rule to be invoked if the Raiders could get Liberty out in the bottom of the 4th. Pitcher Caleb Crouch set Liberty down in order on strikeouts to give the Coffee County 9 the title.
Along with his championship game home run, Parker pitched a shutout in the semifinals. Crouch got the win in the title game as he finished with 6 strikeouts and played well defensively all weekend long. At the plate, Chase Leonard led the team in hitting as he had 9 doubles and 18 RBI over the weekend. Tristan Spencer, Eli Hancock, Grayson Sadler and Leiton Yancer all had wins on the mound for Coffee County. The Raiders were coached by Jay Crouch, Kerry Gannon, Greg Hancock and Craig Sadler.
