Championships Remain In Murfreesboro

The Tennessee Secondary Schools Athletic Association board will continue to hold its state basketball tournaments and the Spring Fling championships in Rutherford County for five more years. Spring Fling is held at locations across the county and the state basketball playoffs are at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro. The Daily News Journal reports that Spring Fling brings in an estimated $3.5 million in tourism spending for the county while the basketball tournament leads to $3 million in tourism. Willowbrook Golf Club in Manchester will continue to host the TSSAA high school championships.

8/17/12 — Joe Milton Jones

Joe Milton Jones, age 79 of Belvidere, passed away Friday August 10, 2012 at Baptist Hospital in Nashville.

He was a native of Lincoln County and served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He later retired from Wilton Corporation following more than thirty years of service. He also worked for Franklin County Waste management. He was a member of the United Steel Workers Union and Oak Grove Baptist Church.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Vera Smith Jones and his father, Elmer Andrew Jones; a brother Eli Jones.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Willene Shockley Jones of Belvidere; daughter, Debbie Jones Smith of Belvidere; sons, Joe Steven Jones and Jeff Jones, both of Belvidere, Barry (Brenda) Jones of Fayetteville; Jason (Ashley) Jones of Hillsboro; sisters, Wilma Foster of Fayetteville, Linda (Bill) Poarch, also of Fayetteville, Jean Jackson of Belvidere; brothers, Earl Jones of Fayetteville, Ray (Becky) Jones of Belvidere; grandchildren Christina Smith (Pete) Sirten, Larry (Brandie) Smith, Nicolas Smith, James Morris, Sheena (David) Thompson, Christopher Smith, Gregory (Leslie) Jones, Savanna Jones, Holly Jones and Miranda White; great-grandchildren, Abriella Hershman and Carson Thompson.

The funeral service will be conducted from the chapel of Watson-North Funeral Home at 4 p.m. Friday August 17, 2012.

Interment will follow at Shady Grove Cemetery in Flintville with friends and family members serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5-9 and Friday evening 4-9 at Watson-North Funeral Home.

9/14/12 — Terry Ray Shinkel

Memorial services for Mr. Terry Ray  Shinkel, age 55, of Hillsboro, will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday,  September 14, 2012 at Manchester Funeral Home Chapel. 

Visition with the family will be from  9:00 AM until time of services. 

Mr.  Shinkel passed away Thursday, August 9, 2012 at Vanderbilt University Medical  Center in Nashville, following a long battle with  leukemia.

Mr. Shinkel was born in Saginaw,  Michigan, the son of the late Myron Shinkel and Joyce Milwrick Shinkel.  He was employed as a dock manager for  General Motors and attended St. Mark’s Catholic  Church.

In addition to his father, Terry was  also preceded in death by a sister, Dolores. 

He is survived by his wife, Sue Shinkel  of Hillsboro; one son, Jamie Shinkel of Riverdale, MI; two daughters, Lisa  (Ronnie) George of Springhill, TN and Sara (Dennis) Brooks of Lebanon; three  brothers, Albert, Lee, and Butch Shinkel; three sisters, Pat, Jenny, and  Joyce-Ann; three grandchildren, Abby, Nate, and Jake George; and several nieces,  nephews, and cousins.

8/15/12 — Forest Ramsey Wilson, Jr.

 

Mr. Forest Ramsey Wilson, Jr. age 78 of McMinnville, TN, died Monday, August 13, 2012, at N.H.C. Health Care in McMinnville, TN.

He was born June 30, 1934, in Warren County, TN, was retired machine designer, and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by his parents Forest and Alma Bratcher Wilson.

Survivors include his wife Betty Tittsworth Wilson, McMinnville, TN, daughter Vicky Wilson Spellings and husband George, Manchester, TN, grandchildren Ryan Jones, Nashville, TN, and Jonathan (Carrie) Jones, Jackson, TN, great-grandchildren Audrey, Jeremiah, and Jonathan Jones, sister Shirley (Ray) Durham, Manchester, TN, niece and nephew Shelia and Michael Durham, and brother-in-law James Tittsworth, McMinnville, TN.

Funeral service is 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at McMinnville Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Brenton Cox will officiate.

Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery.

The Wilson Family will receive friends Wednesday from 10 A.M. until 2 P.M. at the parlors of McMinnville Funeral Home.

8/14/12 — Jack Easter Green

Jack Easter Green age 70 of Sewanee passed away August 12, 2012 at his residence, surrounded by family.

He was preceded in death by his parents James Thomas and Gladys Jane Green, his loving wife Alice Jean Green, brothers John Henry Green, and Richard Douglas Green, sister Floy Ann Caldwell.

Survivors include his children Charles A. Green of Sewanee, Angela Christine McAdams of Acworth, GA, and Mary Jane Green of Sewanee; brothers and sisters; Jim Green, Sue Lappin, Frances Lappin, and Pete Green all of Sewanee, Diane Vandiver of Florida; 4 grandchildren, several nieces and Nephews.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with Reverend Thomas George officiating.

Burial will be in O’Dear Cemetery with full military honors provided by Sequatchie Valley Honor Guard.

The family will receive friends Monday 5–9 P.M. at the funeral home.

7/14/12 — Verna Fay Carter

Verna Fay Carter, age 82 of Manchester, Tennessee, passed away on August 9, 2012 at the Middle Tennessee Medical Center in Murfreesboro.
She was born on March 26, 1930 in Charleston, IL to her parents, the late Orland G. Hurst and Grace Hopper Hurst.
She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Harold Hurst, Daniel Hurst, Kenny Hurst, Russell Hurst and Billy Hurst.
She loved her family and playing Bingo with her friends at Kingwood Arms.
Mrs. Carter is survived by her loving husband, Ralph E. Carter of Manchester, TN; daughters, Pamela F. Henson of Manchester, TN and Brenda K. Herschberger and her husband Virgil of Hillsboro, TN; sons, Roger Carter and his wife Jean of Huntley, IL and Dennis Carter of Manchester, TN; sisters, Merna M. Porter and  Kenova Coppersmith; three grandchildren, Stephanie Bradford, Michele Taylor and Megan N. Padgett; two great-grandchildren, Claire Bradford and Chris Bradford; and
a host of friends.
Visitation will be on Tuesday evening, August 14, 2012 from 6:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Central Funeral Home.
A Memorial Service, to celebrate her life, will follow at 7:00 p.m. with Tom Evans officiating.

8/14/12 — Zelma Ruth Treadwell

 Zelma Ruth Treadwell, age 82, passed away on August 9, 2012 at the Bailey Manor in Manchester, Tennessee.

She was a housewife and member of the Summitville Methodist Church.

Mrs. Treadwell was born in Niles, Michigan on April 14, 1930 to her

parents, the late James T. Campbell and Maude Hickerson Campbell.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Braxton W.”Larry” Treadwell;

son, Judd C. Treadwell; and brother, Clyde R. Campbell.

She is survived by a brother, James W. Campbell of Niles, Michigan;

nieces, Pamela Heuschele (Dan) of Niles, Michigan and Terri Lane (Tom) of Kalamazoo, Michigan;

special friend and caregiver, Sue Richardson (Pat) of Manchester, TN and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, August 14, 2012 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. at Central Funeral Home in Manchester, TN.

A Graveside Service will follow on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at the Rose Hill Memorial Gardens with Reverend Darrell Day officiating.

8/12/12 — Linda Kay Stephens

Ms. Linda Kay Stephens, age 39, of Tullahoma, passed away Wednesday at Harton Regional Medical Center.

A native of Tullahoma, she was the daughter of Bruce and Bonnie Stephens and Linda JoAnn Hulsey and was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by one son; Joseph Baker, two daughters; Gatona Leighann Stephens and Kelsey Joyce Baker, two sisters; Dionnia Slythia Martin and Mellissa Ann Hice.

Visitation with the family will be Sunday, from 12:00PM until 2:00PM at the Tullahoma Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00PM Sunday, in the chapel of Tullahoma Funeral Home.

Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Jamboree Action and Pre-Season Look At Red Raiders

Saturday in Lebanon the Coffee Co. Raider varsity football team saw action against Lebanon in a jamboree. The Blue Devils were attempting to punt the ball out of their end zone but the snap was too high and the Raiders got a safety. The game would end up with Coffee County winning 2-0. The JV lost their game 24-18 but the Freshmen Raiders had a good night winning 12-6.
The Raiders open the regular season on Friday at home against Shelbyville. Friday Night Thunder starts at 6pm and kickoff at 7pm on Thunder Radio.

Tennessee Team Headed To Little League World Series

Brock Myers pitched five no-hit innings and Blake Osborne scored on a passed ball Friday to help Goodlettsville beat host Warner Robins, GA, 1-0 to advance to the Little League World Series.
The Goodlettsville team, which won the Tennessee state championship, will become the first Tennessee team to play at the World Series at South Williamsport, PA, since 1987.
