C.J. Anthony of CHS football
Celebrating Homecoming on Friday night, the Coffee County CHS football team welcomed Cookeville to Carden-Jarrell Field. Looking to build on the momentum of last Friday’s win at Siegel, the Red Raiders squared off against a big and talented Cavalier squad. Cookeville got on the board first with 2:09 left in the 1st quarter as they returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown. A pair of long touchdown runs in the 2nd quarter gave Cookeville a 21 to 0 lead before the Red Raiders scored with 3 seconds to go in the half. Matthew Pittman hit C.J. Anthony with a 16 yard touchdown pass to give the Raiders some momentum going into the half down 21 to 7. But Cookeville scored touchdowns on their first 3 drives of the 2nd half to stretch the lead to 41 to 7. Coffee County got a hard fought 1 yard touchdown run from Marshall Haney with 4:44 left in the game for the final score. Felix Salinas finished with a pair of point after kicks.

Titans Bounce Back With Huge Win Over Falcons, 24-10
Story by: Jim Wyatt, Titansonline.com
Now that’s more like it.
The Titans flew into the Peach State and looked, well, quite peachy in a 24-10 win over the Atlanta Falcons.
Ten days after a dreadful performance in Jacksonville, the Titans jumped all over the Falcons early and then cruised to a huge win.
Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota completed 18-of-27 passes for 227 yards and three touchdowns, with a 129.7 rating.
Running back Derrick Henry carried the ball 27 times for 100 yards.
Rookie receiver A.J. Brown had three catches for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
The Titans defense sacked Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan five times and came up with several fourth down stops.
And in the process, the Titans improved to 2-2 in the season.
The Titans got off to a fast start in this one.
The Titans jumped out to an early 7-0 lead on a 55-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to receiver A.J. Brown, who caught the ball in the middle of the field and made several Falcons miss while sprinting into the end zone.
After the Falcons answered back with a quick touchdown drive to make it 7-7, scoring on a one-yard touchdown run by Ito Smith, the Titans went back to Brown again for another score. Mariota engineered a 14-play, 75-yard drive and capped it off with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brown, which made it 14-7. Mariota connected with receivers Corey Davis and Adam Humphries of third-down completions to keep the drive alive.
On the ensuing possession, Titans defensive lineman Jurrell Casey sacked Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, and he forced a fumble he recovered himself in the process. But the Titans weren’t able to cash it in for points.
It was one of two big plays for Casey, who combined with safety Kenny Vaccaro on a fourth-and-one stop late in the second quarter. Vaccaro got immediate penetration on the stop of Falcons running back Devonta Freeman before Casey gobbled him up.
The Titans stretched their lead to 17-7 on a 45-yard field goal by kicker Cairo Santos, and they kept coming.
Late in the second quarter, the Titans made it 24-7 on a 23-yard touchdown pass from Mariota to Davis, which capped a six-play, 60-yard drive and ignited a “Let’s Go Titans!” chant at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The Falcons cut Tennessee’s lead to 24-10 on their opening possession of the third quarter on a field goal by kicker Matt Bryant.
The Titans face the Buffalo Bills next Sunday at Nissan Stadium.
Nashville SC Grabs Win and 1st Place in USL Eastern Conference

Ropapa Mensah of Nashville SC
Nashville Soccer Club climbed into first place in the Eastern Conference for the first time in the club’s two-year history after blanking Loudoun United FC 2-0 on the road on Saturday night. Daniel Ríos and Ropapa Mensah led the night’s offensive efforts while Matt Pickens and his backline secured the clean sheet.
A goal and an assist from forward Ropapa Mensah sealed one more road victory in the 2019 USL Championship regular season for Nashville SC as Nashville beat Loudoun United FC 2-0 in Virginia on Saturday night. Mensah assisted on Daniel Ríos’ 50th career goal in the first half and scored himself in the second to propel Nashville to the three points and into first place in the USL Eastern Conference.
With a draw between Tampa Bay Rowdies and Louisville City FC in addition to a Indy Eleven loss to Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC on Saturday night, Nashville moved into the top position in the Eastern Conference with three matches to play in the regular season. It is the first time Nashville SC has held sole possession of first place in the conference in its two-year USL Championship history.
Nashville SC scored its goals in the 19’ and 55’ minutes in its second 2-0 win over Loudoun United this season. For keeper Matt Pickens, it was the 12th clean sheet of the season and 14th for Nashville SC overall this season. With 14 clean sheets, Nashville is currently tied with Pittsburgh and Phoenix Rising FC for the most clean sheets in the USL Championship this season.
Pickens leads the USL Championship Golden Glove race with 0.68 goal against average, allowing 15 goals in 23 appearances. Tonight, the veteran keeper made two saves in the shutout.
Here are three takeaways from the victory.
1) Nashville Jumps Into First
With the three points and the necessary help, Nashville SC jumped into first place in the East. It was a massive win as Nashville is back into control of its own destiny for a home playoff match. It has been one of the biggest club goals in 2019 to host a USL Championship Playoff match and now it looks more likely than ever as Nashville SC sits atop the Eastern Conference. With three home matches remaining in the regular season, Nashville would have the inside track to a top two seed in the East and two potential home matches in the playoffs.
2) Ríos Is Back
Daniel Ríos has spent the last month recovering from a groin injury, and got back on the scoresheet tonight, slotting in the first goal of the match. It was Ríos first goal since he scored on August 17 in a 3-1 win over Charlotte Independence. While the USL Championship Golden Boot looks out of reach for the star forward, Ríos’ goal is a welcome sign for NSC and head coach Gary Smith. For a deep playoff run, Nashville will need Ríos in top form in October and beyond.
3) Ropapa Shines
Fan-favorite forward Ropapa Mensah was the key man for Nashville SC in the win with an impact on both NSC goals on the evening. Mensah assisted on the first goal and scored the second. It was the sixth goal and fourth assist for the Ghanaian forward in all competitions Mensah has been a fire-starter throughout his two years in gold including scoring the first goal in club history in Nashville SC’s preseason match against Atlanta United FC back in February of 2018. Like Ríos, Mensah has been and will be a key piece in Nashville’s run to the postseason.
Up Next
Nashville will have a 10-day break between matches as it will scoreboard watch for the next week. It will take the field again on October 8th at First Tennessee Park against Louisville City FC at 7 p.m. CT. That match will be of extreme importance as Louisville City is just seven points behind Nashville in the Eastern standings.
