Gas Prices Fall Below $3 Per Gallon
Drivers across the United States paid the lowest September gas prices since 2010. The national average was $3.39 per gallon, which was about 13 cents less than last year and 44 cents cheaper than 2012. Today’s national average is $3.27.
Throughout September, the average price in Tennessee was $3.17, which was 56 cents less than last year and 47 cents cheaper than 2012. Tennessee’s average today is $3.07.
“Gas prices typically slide in September as the busy driving season ends and because many stations begin selling less costly winter-blend gasoline on September 16,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Gas prices generally have been less expensive than in recent years due to the dramatic boom in North American petroleum production.
The low price per gallon in Manchester is $2.99 and in Tullahoma it’s $2.98.
Gov. Bill Haslam Questions State’s Unemployment Rate
The most recent national unemployment rate released Friday was 5.9 percent – the lowest level since July 2008, in the middle of the Great Recession. Meanwhile, Tennessee’s jobless rate was 7.4 percent in August.
Haslam says Tennessee is among the top states adding new jobs and that the state is not adding a large number of new claims for unemployment benefits. That’s why the governor says “it’s a little hard to understand” why Tennessee has been unable to whittle away at the unemployment rate.
Haslam says he has asked some economists to look into the statistics to see if they can find an explanation for Tennessee’s high unemployment rate.
Inspirational Speaker and Former Vol Inky Johnson To Speak At Motlow
In 2006 while playing football for the University of Tennessee, Johnson suffered a life-threatening injury on the field against Air Force. Attempting to tackle Air Force running back Justin Handley, Johnson thrust his shoulder into the player’s body which caused traumatic injury to Johnson’s nerves. While the injury left Johnson’s right arm completely paralyzed and ended his playing career, it did not discourage.
His book, an autobiography titled, “Inky: An Amazing Story of Faith and Perseverance,” was released in 2011 and can be purchased at any major book retail or online outlet.
In August, Johnson spoke to the Tullahoma High School football team during a dinner sponsored by the Tullahoma Quarterback Club. He spoke to the players about leadership and service outside of football. “Who you are as a person is way more important than who you are as a football player,” said Johnson. “I’m bringing you this message not for the game of football, although I love the game of football. I want you guys to be great role models. I want you to be great husbands. I want you guys to be great men. I want you to be able to go out in your community and contribute and lead in such a way that people look at you and are willing to follow.” Follow Johnson on social media outlets, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube at Inky Johnson.
