Preds Come Back Again, Beat Lightning in Overtime

Ryan Ellis[Photo courtesy of NHL.com]

Roman Josi tied it; Ryan Ellis won it.

Nashville’s top defensive pair combined to give the Predators a 3-2 overtime win against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night at Amalie Arena. The victory boosts Nashville’s win streak to three games, and two power-play goals on the night – with a third that came just after another man advantage had expired – gave the Preds their seventh win in 11 tries.

It was the first time this season the Preds have scored two power-play goals in a single game, and goaltender Juuse Saros also collected his first win on the campaign, a well-earned victory for the Nashville netminder.

“We’ve kind of struggled in front of [Saros] and left him out to dry at times, so it was about time we put a full 60 minutes in front of him,” Ellis said. “Tonight, he made some saves and got rewarded and won the game.”

Nashville’s first marker on the man advantage came in the first period, and it was Calle Jarnkrok who fired a shot off of a Lightning defender and behind goaltender Curtis McElhinney to give the Preds a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Tampa Bay scored twice in the second stanza with goals from Steven Stamkos and Tyler Johnson, but just as they have so many times already this season, the Preds found a way to even things up in the third period.

With less than six minutes to play in regulation, Preds Captain Roman Josi blasted a shot from the point that found a way through traffic and tied the game at 2-2.

“Both units were moving it really well tonight,” Ellis said of the power play. “[Josi’s] unit was moving really well, a big goal at the end for that unit. It’s the timely ones that matter, and we got the two points.

In the extra session, it was Ellis who walked in and snapped a shot to the top corner to send the visitors home happy.

Josi ultimately finished the night with a goal and two assists for his first three-point game of the season, an impressive showing from the captain with both Matt Duchene and Filip Forsberg out of the lineup with lower-body injuries.

Saros made 28 saves in total, and the Preds extended their winning streak in Tampa Bay to four games.

Overall, the Preds have now earned a point in 12 straight (10-0-2) and 15 of their last 16 games (12-1-2) against the Lightning. It’s their longest active regular-season point streak against a single opponent.

Notes:

Forward Matt Duchene missed Saturday’s game with a lower-body injury. Filip Forsberg also remained out of the lineup with a lower-body injury as well. Duchene did participate in the morning skate on Saturday, and Forsberg has resumed skating on his own as well.

Prior to Saturday’s game, Nashville recalled forward Anthony Richard from AHL Milwaukee. Richard skated in his second-career NHL game and posted two shots.

The Preds will now return to Nashville to begin another three-game homestand, and it starts on Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena with the Chicago Blackhawks in town (at 7 p.m. CT).

Titans Win Another Wild One, This Time 27-23 Over the Buccaneers

Story by Jim Wyatt – TitansOnline.com

It was another heart-stopping finish at Nissan Stadium on Sunday. And another Titans win.

Titans quarterback Ryan Tannehill threw three touchdown passes and the Titans defense got another big stop on defense late to record a 27-23 win over the Buccaneers.

The Titans took the lead with 6:55 left on an eight-yard touchdown pass from Tannehill to rookie receiver A.J. Brown, which capped a 12-play, 90-yard drive.

The Titans appeared to be on the verge of extending their lead, but punter Brett Kern was stopped short on a fourth-down run late on a fake punt try, and the Buccaneers got the ball back.

Then, with the Buccaneers facing a fourth-and-one at the Tennessee 32-yard line, Titans defensive lineman Jurrell Casey stuffed the Tampa Bay runner for a loss.

Later, cornerback Logan Ryan intercepted Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston with 18 seconds left to seal it.

The Titans improved to 4-4 with the win.

The Titans scored a pair of touchdowns early by forcing a pair of turnovers and led 17-15 at the half.

The Buccaneers took a 23-17 lead early in the third quarter, however, on a two-yard touchdown pass from Winston to receiver Mike Evans.

The Titans cut the lead to 23-20 on a 42-yard field goal by kicker Cody Parkey, who also made a 51-yard kick in the first half, and that was the score after three quarters.

Then came the memorable finish.

The Titans took a 7-3 lead with 8:55 left in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown pass from Tannehill to tight end Jonnu Smith. Moments earlier, Titans rookie defensive lineman Isaiah Mack recovered a mishandled snap by Winston at the 10-yard line.

Later in the first quarter, Tannehill connected with receiver Tajae Sharpe for a six-yard touchdown pass to give the Titans a 14-3 lead. The second score was set up by an interception by cornerback Malcolm Butler, who returned it to the Tampa Bay six-yard line.

The Buccaneers kicked three field goals in the first half, as Matt Gay made kicks of 22, 24 and 48 yards, along with a nine-yard touchdown pass from Winston to Evans.

The Titans travel to face the Carolina Panthers next Sunday.

Nashville SC Gets 1st Ever Playoff Win on Saturday

Two first half goals and a late game clincher were more than enough to seal Nashville SC’s first-ever playoff victory, a 3-1 win over Charleston Battery at First Tennessee Park on Saturday night. Lebo Moloto, Daniel Ríos and Derrick Jones all scored their first playoff goals in Nashville SC gold to advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals next weekend.

Moloto got the scoring started for NSC in the 10’ minute when a Matt LaGrassa pass found the South African midfielder running free in the box. A shot around Charleston keeper Joe Kuzminsky by Moloto gave NSC the lead 1-0. It took a penalty by Charleston to equalize in the first half. Nashville defender Forrest Lasso barely missed a ball and inadvertently kicked a Charleston player in the box. That led to Zeiko Lewis converting a PK to knot the game at 1-1.

Nashville retook the lead immediately when it’s star forward Daniel Ríos scored with a header off a short corner from Justin Davis in the 43’ minute. That goal was Ríos first in the USL Championship Playoffs and sent NSC into the locker room up 2-1.

That scoreline stuck until the 88’ minute when Jones found the back of the net to seal the win. The goal from the midfielder signed midseason was his first as a member Nashville SC. While being dragged down in the box, Jones managed to get a shot away that snuck past Kuzminsky and inside the far post.

Here are three takeaways from the exciting win.

1) Ríos and Moloto Again

Nashville’s top two offensive threats delivered in a big way in the club’s first home playoff match. Each scored in the first half to give Nashville a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. In his fifth USL Championship season, Moloto finally found his first playoff goal. As Nashville’s offensive orchestrator for its two USL Championship seasons, it was fitting for him to find the net. For Ríos, he has scored 40 USL Championship regular season goals in two seasons, but finally got his first in the playoffs for what ended up being the match-winner.

2) Jones Finds his First

As one of three Nashville SC MLS signings playing on the USL Championship team, it has been a long 2019 season for Derrick Jones. Just two week after coming to Nashville SC in May, Jones was injured and missed almost five months recovering following ankle surgery. The capping goal of the 3-1 win was a pretty payoff for the hard word Jones has put in to make it back on the pitch to supplement Nashville’s title run. The midfielder nearly had a second in stoppage time, but his highlight reel goal will surely give Jones confidence heading deeper into the postseason.

3) Survive and Advance

The name of the game in any single elimination playoff format is to survive and advance and Nashville SC did just that for its first postseason victory. Playing a tired Charleston Battery team that itself advanced after 120 minutes on Wednesday night, Nashville took advantage of the full week of rest and looked strong throughout the 90 minutes on Saturday. The Boys in Gold had a deserved lead at halftime after outshooting Charleston 9-1 in the first 45 minutes. Now Nashville will stay at home for an Eastern Conference Semifinal against Indy Eleven.

Up Next

Nashville SC will see rival Indy Eleven next Saturday at First Tennessee Park at 7 p.m. Nashville and Indy have played twice this season, drawing in Indianapolis 0-0 before Nashville took a 2-0 victory in July at Nissan Stadium. Tickets to playoff match will go on sale to the public on Monday, but current Season Ticket Members can check their inbox for a special presale starting tonight.
