TN Faith Community Opens Doors for Those with Disabilities
At a time when family and friends often gather at places of worship to celebrate the holidays, Tennessee’s faith community is taking a lead on ensuring inclusiveness for the state’s individuals with disabilities. One common barrier is just being able to gain access physically, but as Jeanne Crocker, a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church in Lexington, notes it goes well beyond. “That might include behavioral issues or specific special needs that they have to have a quiet place,” she explains. “They don’t like crowds or too much excitement, blinking lights, those kind of things you have to be attentive to.” According to the Tennessee Disability Coalition, there are about 1 million people in the state with a disability and that’s a number that continues to rise. Crocker teaches the special needs Sunday school class at First Baptist, which also offers a respite for the families of loved ones with disabilities on the first Friday night of each month. “Folks with special needs are brought to the church and for three hours we do crafts and music and games,” she relates. “And it gives families an opportunity to go shopping or get some rest or to do some things that they may not be able to do on a typical night.” Crocker says First Baptist is one of many local faith communities now realizing the importance of removing barriers to welcome those individuals with disabilities. “I was speaking to a friend of mine in Jackson, Tenn.,” Crocker says. “And she said that reaching out to families with special needs is the fastest growing ministry for their church, because there is such a need to incorporate these families and let them know that they count and that they matter.”
Almost 100 Million People To Travel During The Holidays
With Christmas and New Years just around the corner, AAA released its travel forecast for the end of the year holiday season. According to the report, more people will be traveling this year.
AAA projects 98.6 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more from home during the year-end holiday period, which spans from Dec. 23rd to Jan. 4th. That is an increase of four percent from the 94.8 million who traveled last year.
About 91 percent of people will reach their holiday destination by driving, and 6 percent will fly, according to AAA. The good news for people taking road trips is that Christmas Day gas prices are expected to be the lowest since 2008.

Frank Giaimo, dead at the age of 76. Francis Robert Giaimo was born September 22, 1938 in the city of St. Louis, Missouri to Francis Damien Giaimo and Vincenta Giaimo.
Frank was the second of 5 children. Frank went to Catholic Grade School and High School and began his 26 year career with Wagner Electric on February 2, 1959 on the second shift as an assembler on their wheel cylinder assembly line. At the time of Frank’s resignation from Wagner 26 years later in February 1985, he was directing the overall Materials Management and Deployment Organization for the company. This responsibility included order entry, order processing, customer service, the scheduling of production from 11 manufacturing plants and making distribution to thousands of Wagner customers through 10 distribution centers throughout the United States, Canada, and the central Distribution Center in Tullahoma. Frank was offered a position at Wagner’s corporate headquarters in Parsippany, New Jersey and Frank and his wife Janis chose to stay in Tullahoma. Frank has often said this is a decision he will never regret. During this 26 year period, Frank completed his Business Degree from Washington University, St. Louis, did a tour of duty in the United States Army, spent two years in Bramalea Ontario, Canada as the Operations Manager for Wagner’s Canada operation, and in May 1979, shortly before moving to Tullahoma, Frank married Janis Becker. Within a few weeks after leaving Wagner Electric, Frank joined the executive staff at Micro Craft where he worked the balance of his 15 year career. During his time at Micro Craft, he had the opportunity to do many things. Originally he was brought on board to organize the start-up of the Micro Craft Hampton, Virginia operation. That was to be Micro Craft’s second organization across from NASA Langley, a major Micro Craft customer. Frank went on to help organize many more Micro Craft organizations before his retirement in 2001. Frank wrote many of Micro Craft’s policies and procedures. For the majority of his employment, Frank served as the company’s Risk Manager. He was credited with being a key contributor to its growth from a small, one-location, to a $70-million a year business with locations across the United States at the time of his retirement. Frank was also the Treasurer for the last 3-4 years of his employment.
Upon moving to Tullahoma, Frank joined the First United Methodist Church. He became very active and chaired the Adult Council among others. His most loved contribution to the church was teaching The L.O.V.E. Sunday School class, which he did for 16 years. Frank enjoyed golf and tennis as well as traveling with his wife Janis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Damien Giaimo and Vincenta Giaimo and one brother, Joseph Giaimo, who was one year older than Frank when his life ended in 1959 in a drowning accident.
